Gravatar The Crackers was Levon's choice, Steve...It's on the original '68 contract between Capitol and Groscourt (Albert Grossman's production company).

The actual 'Band' name was the handle tagged on them by the Woodstock locals...'Where's the band, man?'

I wonder if some publishing issues got resolved before this new tribute album came out...Lots of blood under the bridge there.

Gravatar hey -
after discharging from the army in 1968 i moved to san francisco and enjoyed the music scene there for many years (it was probably attending monterey pop that tweaked my interest).
i went to hundreds of bay area concerts over the years, saw some awesome shows...but the best i ever saw was 'the band' at the last waltz. they smoked every guest on the stage that night.

Gravatar Darkblack:

The Crackers sounds right. And yes, clavinet through a wah. That it was a clav became immediately clear when listening to the tape.

Keith:

Indeed. I had the multitrack masters for both albums in my hands, The Band (brown album) contained Cripple Creek.

Gravatar Addendum: If I remember my history, the clavinet got fed through a wah pedal (Cry Baby, IIRC) that Hudson operated live on the take...Necessity's a mother sometimes, isn't it?

;>)

Gravatar Ah, the Crackers...Master musicians all, forged on the hard yet joyous anvil of Ronnie Hawkins.

Those guys could hit you from so many directions it was ridiculous...Each one a multiinstrumentalist, great harmonies...and the master of the Lowery organ, Mr. Garth Hudson.

Deliver me to those days of old

;>)

Gravatar Isn't "Cripple Creek" on the Band's second self-titled album?
