We have the CBC here, but it lacks the breadth of content to permit sustained interest. So the U.S. NPR service, generally only available in Canada by podcast, steps in to fill the breach. But even if it were available here via radiowave, I'd still listen to the podcasts - time shifting, place shifting etc. are too important as listening criteria for me to return to radio.

I don't necessarily disagree with you on the advantages of time shifting but, as it happens, I don't own a portable music (podcast)player. I also see a cost in time to set one up, subscribe to the relevant podcasts, maintain syncronisation with the portable device, keep the device charged etc. etc. Getting in the car and switching on the radio is just easier.
BBC Radio 4, and particularly the Today Programme, currently meet my needs as a user of radio.
I certainly accept that this isn't the case for everyone.
