There is a deep-rooted disconnect in Western civilization between altruisn/"goodness" and the pursuit of self-interest. This leads to pro-torture "Christians." It also leads to those in favor of enlightening the pursuit of self-interst having trouble making themselves understood. The ruthlessly and stupidly self-interested hear them as weak, whereas the relentlessly and stupidly selfless hear them as harsh.
At the current moment, the stupidly selfish impulse is the larger problem. However, flopping over into the other extreme won't work out well either.
Deeprooted framing problems like this are not easy to address.
