Gravatar Krauthammers' always good, Stogie!

When you get the chance check out these nihilists, who are always going off on the confederates. I thought you might be able to straighten 'em out:

"Great Moments in the Mainstreaming of Confederate Historical Fantasy":

Let me know how it turns out. David Noon, the author of the post ... pure ass!

Gravatar Donald, I do believe that black Confederates existed so I am afraid I'm not with you on this one. Richard Rollins, a friend who is now deceased, wrote about them and a good friend of mine, Vern Padgett, has written about them too. Whether there was as many as 90,000, however seems stretching it.

Many worked as cooks and teamsters for the Confederate army but quite a few others bore arms. Some were free blacks and some slaves who accompanied their masters into battle. I know of one black Confederate Sergeant who was killed at the wall in Pickett's Charge.

Many blacks today identify with the Confederacy; in fact, it was their support in Mississippi that preserved the state's Confederate based state flag.

I will refer you to some good articles on the subject if you are interested. These are scholarly articles that make use of original records of the time period. Some are of the observations of Union troops in the field, referring to black sharpshooters and other troops.

I am a life member of Sons of Confederate Veterans and have done quite a bit of study on my own. Also, the Sons has black members in it because their ancestors did indeed fight for the South. Also. large numbers of Jews, Catholics, Hispanics, American Indians and even a few Asians fought for the South as well. One of our Los Angeles chapters, called camps, has a Chinese member. You can only be a member if you can prove you had a direct or collateral ancestor who served.

Slavery was a collateral issue; the main reason for the war was the dispute over a state's right to secede. That was the conclusion of a black professor at American University who performed his own study. I forget his name because it has been ten years since I read a speech he gave at Gettysburg National Park on the subject, but I will see if I can find it.

If you could have a conversation with Walter Williams, the great black conservative who has sometimes filled in for Rush Limbaugh, you would find that he agrees with me. Furthermore, some of our greatest defenders are the Sons of Union Veterans, who understand the war better than most.

My major dispute with the Neo-Confederates is not over history, but over their paleo-conservatism which to me seems more leftist than conservative, and even anti-American, neither of which serves the interests of the modern South. Then there are the racists who also want to quash the idea of black Confederates, for unsavory reasons of their own.

Finally, there were large numbers of free blacks in the South who were manumitted by their masters or who purchased their own freedom. And, there were quite a few blacks who owned slaves themselves. Thomas Sowell once had an article on the subject that drew the wrath of the grievance industry who don't want to believe it.

The Civil War ended 143 years ago and we have more important fish to fry in the here and now, namely, preserving freedom in the face of the Islamic threat. Nevertheless, many good and loyal Americans are of Confederate ancestry and have a loyalty to their ancestors and are sensitive to their cause and sacrifices. Confederate descendants include great Americans like General George Patton, General Joseph Stillwell (who died on Okinawa) and Nathan Bedford Forrest III, who died in a bombing raid over Germany.

Jeb Stuart IV also served in the U.S. Armed Forces -- the airforce, if I remember correctly. I met him once and shook his hand.

Denigrating Southerners' ancestors will not help build the conservative coalition that we need to win the political battles that we face today. So tread lightly, you damn Yankee .

Gravatar Weren't Black Confederate soldiers also paid the same amount, and billeted with their white counterparts? I thought they were, or read that somewhere.

If they admit there were black slave owners, it would reveal the truth on why the war was fought. Saying the war between the states was fought over slavery, is like saying the Iraq war was fought for big oil. The funny, and sad part is a lot of people buy that.

Gravatar I would like to add.

As times rolls along we can see how right the South was.

The one thing that bothers me about conservative talk host, is that they complain about the Federal Gov't, and praise Lincoln in the same breath. This also says loads about the North's credibility on the war.

Gravatar CSA, you're right about the equal pay of black Confederates. It is included in articles at this link:

http://scvcalifornia.blogspot.com/

There is a series of articles there on black Confederates.
