Gravatar I love the way technology gets the best of us sometimes. The 'headline' says "From Advent until the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, it is customary in some places to sin"

Gravatar It might interest readers to know that this antiphon is never sung at Compline in the old Dominican Rite. It is the Magnificat Ant. for the Office of Our Lady on Saturday from Purification to Lent. For those wondering, in our Rite, Our Lady on Saturday has a First Vespers (but obviously no Second Vespers because of Sunday).

When Dominicans celebrate the post-1970 Roman Office, the 1982 Proprium still prescribes the Salve Regina year round, although the Sub tuum may replace it at any time and the Regina Caeli may do so in Paschal time. The proprium also provides for optional singing of the Litany of Our Lady on Saturday, with the prosa Inviolata, another ancient Dominican Practice. It comes between the Salve and the O Lumen (antiphon in honor of St. Dominic).

I do think that, since the Proprium is not absolutely binding on Dominicans and the new Liturgy of the Hours gives the Alma Redemptoris as an option after Compline, Dominican might still choose to use it in Advent (or from Purification to Lent).

Gravatar Sinning or not (!), it was lovely to hear this less usual melody for the 'Alma Redemptoris' in Blackfriars last evening : and whilst I love the Salve, they do say that a change is as good as a rest . . .

Gravatar Does anyone know a website where one can download an organ accompaniment for the solemn Roman tone of the Alma?

Gravatar I try to remember that General Chapter of 175... 6? prescribed the chant of Salve Regina the whole year.

Yours,

Gravatar The brothers chant beautifully and the imagery was very nice. I'm embarrased and saddened to say that our little schola really butchered the Alma this past Sunday. Being the first singing of the season, we simply didn't practice enough. Most of us in the schola are too new to know this hymn by heart; the average age of our group is about 30! Please forgive us, Lord. We will do better next time.
