This news item serves to highlight what seems obvious to everyone but the concerned individual: Marini needs to "hit the bricks."
His continued presence is like the grinding of an unset (or poorly set) fracture. We cannot have healing -- indeed, things will only get worse -- until he goes.

To me, Gregorian, Old Roman, Ambrosian and other traditional chants are sacred liturgical music as well as traditional hymns. Not bad modern and/or protestant music that even most ptotestants won't use.
Also, this penchant for large orchestrias has got to go esp for special liturgical functions.
A mass like Fr. Christopher Smith's dvd is much better than than the one from St. John Cantius-by a long road!

Masses with large ochestras such as Mozart's Coronation mass.the Durufle Cum Iubilo, those by Rheingerger, and the Mass in Time of War by Haydn etc express theglory of heaven and the slendor of God as does the chant masses and simple polyphony. People have different tastes.Suum cuique.

What I cant understand is why Liberto insists on composing his on music for papal masses rather than using 16th century polyphony. i dont recall ever hearing anything-not a motet, not a Mass movement from the "masters". please correct me if Im wrong.

A mass like Fr. Christopher Smith's dvd is much better than the one from St. John Cantius-by a long road!
I was at St. Mary's in Greenville (SC) for Corpus Christi this past Sunday, and have posted an account at
www.knoxlatinmass.net/StMarys06.pdf
I was perhaps most impressed by six hundred voices on the floor all -- or so it seemed where I was sitting -- singing both Latin and English with just about the same zest as the choir in the loft.
The celebrant was Fr. Jay Scott Newman, but Fr. Christopher Smith came out to assist with Holy Communion. (A pet peeve of mine is the multiple-priest parish where only the celebrating priest is present for communion, thus necessitating "ordinary use" of allegedly extraordinary ministers of holy communion.)

I agree that Marini SHOULD be able to read the writting on the wall. His day is done. He sould "hit the bricks", "pound the pavement", place ads in the newspaper looking for work. I'm sure some die-hard liberal Cathedral here in the USA would snap Him up in a minute (Mahoney probably).
THank God for this speech by Benedict XVI. I honestly didn't think He had the ________________ to say anything at all other than a nice, sweet non confrontational discourse. He's beginning to hit his stride I think.
He's making all the liberals in the Curia, and in liturgical offices and "Music ministries" red hot mad. Which is what they deserve.
Hopefully there will be mass resignations at the Vatican and at hundreds of chancellories when Benedict XVI really takes off with more of this kind of speech and with strong action.
Bertone as Secretary of State was a hard fought victory for the Pope. Sodano and all the liberals in the Curia I read are livid....as are some of the JP II clone- bishops who hoped to get the job.
One thing I think is peculiar....almost funny. THat is that this speech is about the 10th time since His election that Benedict XVI has repudiated John Paul II. Even one of the Italian newspapers commented on this..of the growing difference and distancing of Benedict XVI from the ideas and agenda of John Paul II. This is a blessing for the Church.

This is the headline etc that is up at the Telegraph (London):
Pope: Silence modern music
The Pope has demanded an end to electric guitars and modern music in church and a return to classical music and traditional choirs.
Sometimes one wishes that the secular newspapers' errors etc were true.

I was tempted to comment earlier that this is the latest in a long string of papal pronouncements since the council that championed chant and polyphony, and therefore, who can expect things to be any different now, but I have just seen a Zenit story which has some other quotes than the CWN story, and I have to say that I've never read language this strong from a pope of the last forty plus years about sacred music.
Viva il papa!

I taped/watched the Corpus Christi celebrations in Rome...the Mass and procession broadcast by Vatican TV and carried byb EWTN.
More than once, I noticed Benedict's annoyance at how the Mass was conducted under Marini. His expression when the choir sang a new little piece obviously composed just for the occasion was priceless. Rolling His eyes etc. You could tell He thought it was banal junk.
Marini fouled up with the Papal speech too. The MC's are always supposed to hand the pontiff His speech for the occasion, but this time, Msgr. Gaswein, Benedict XVI's secretary strode to the rescue with the papers while Marini and Millea (the only American on the Ceremonies crew and like Marini....a liberal) smirked and grinned at each other. They knew there was a mess up, but they were laughing. Total disrespect for the Pope. I was shocked.
Then Marini just sat flanking Benedict on the dais, staring into space and looking bored as usuall.
I think He knows His days are over and He just doesn't care. He never would have supressed laughing or started giggling in the presence of John Paul II. He should get the boot before the Summer's out.
Benedict's speech of Sacred Music was magnificent. He should follow thru with other magnificent acts....total freedom for the classical Tridentine Latin Mass, and hand Marini His "pink slip".

Kenjiro Shoda - I think you should tone down your comments a bit. Whilst I know you don't mean to be offensive, they do have the tendency to be quite overtly critical in a non-Christian fashion.
Just be careful.

I agree with Daniel Canaris about certain comments that get made on these posts. St. Francis de Sales was fond of saying: "The sauce of charity must be cooked until it tastes sweet". Perhaps we ought to practice such on ourselves as well as others.

While I understand and approve most hartily the need for civility and mutual respect in this discourse, It is important to respect an individuals right to speak candidly, especially if they have a viewpoint out of the mainstram. The strength of this blog is in the varying viewpoints from left to right and all have challenged me in significant ways.
I found nothing offensive in Kenjiros last post, and in fact found it very informative.
Shawn has set the groundrules in this bloig very carefully. I dont think Kenjiro has crossed any kind of line. Although I dont agree with everything, I truly enjoy most of what he says.
