Let us wait, shall we, until the Vatican formally announces its appointments. All of this speculation simply seems to confuse us.

I apologise for the fact that the last comment sounds a little testy. I merely meant to say that it seems to create needless tension and confusion to publish speculations about who is going to get which position, and it seems to be a temptation to lack of charity and needless judgement, as well as getting people into quite a flap about nothing in particular. The ending of this story itself urges caution. So, I was just agreeing.

Rumor or otherwise, I believe Ranjith deserves to be Prefect. He is staunchly in favor of Summorum Pontificum and its wider implications for the Church, and this is a good thing. He is not one of bureaucrat-types who just blow with the wind--and it is quite windy in the Vatican--the wind which just wants to blow away all of Sacred Tradition and replace it with false teaching and false worship.
I don't claim to take away any of the accomplishments of Amato, but it's just more of a natural fit Archbishop Ranjith succeeds as Prefect.

I knew that first report sounded fishy...if it were true, it means Archbishop Ranjith is a grasping, ambitious politician, and I simply don't believe that he's such a man.

Johnny Domer,
Just to clarify: By that first report that "sounded fishy" you are referring to the Ialia Oggi piece referred to by Shawn in this post, but not posted by the NLM. The initial piece by Tornielli which the NLM did post was merely presenting possibilities without making such unlikely claims about Archbishop Ranjith's character.

Kiran,
What is important is if there is speculation occuring, that there by some critical analysis or presentation of information that may precisely demonstrate that things may not be as clear as they might seem.
And of course, once speculation starts, it can be hard to stop it. It takes on a life of its own.
Rest assured though that the NLM will only bring you information it considers new and reliable.

With Ranjith as "Cardinal" Archbishop of his home town in ShriLanka, he'll be one more positive vote in the next conclave. Once he's made cardinal, The Holy Father will no doubt call upon his good offices viv-a-via global matters. Oremus.

Nick,
It's worth noting that the idea of Ranjith heading back to Sri Lanka is is very much attached to the idea that he will not be promoted within the Curia.
That idea is questionable at very best.
Keep in mind as well that one can assume a prefecture and then be made a cardinal thereafter -- which would be an expected development of course.
The recent case of Levada in relation to the CDW is a good example. He assumed that office as an archbishop and not a Cardinal. He was made a cardinal shortly thereafter.

This is all in the Will of the Holy Ghost.
Let His Will be done.

His providential will, yes (since He allowed it to happen). His preceptive will, quite possibly not.

Shawn, fair enough.
