Are those candlesticks iron? I don;t beleive I've ever seen black candlesticks before, except in one Anglo-Catholic church, and that was only during lent.

Yes, the deacon is a Norbertine (though not yet a priest). He's studying in Rome. The candlesticks are bronze, which takes on that dark patina - they're not black, though they are darker than one might be used to.

Those cloaked fellows in the background are (I'm guessing) knights of the Constantinian Sacred Military Order of St. George, which is closely associated with this basilica.
