I love my Capella Romano and my winter wool Cappa and my Ferriolone.
Always, without fail, when I am wearing these items and my Cassock...people stop to ask me questions, about the attire and about the Faith. What? Witnessing? By looking like a Priest? surely not!

Interesting! Is there anybody in the states that still wears the cappello?

What about the Franciscans and Dominicans? Are they required to wear the cappello?

Not required, but permitted, I believe. In any case, I do wear one when the occasion and/or weather is appropriate...

I have an old one I found in the basement of the seminary many moons ago. I have wore it from time to time. Most people of a certain age will remember a certain television "priest" who always wore his. Fr. Guido...

His Eminence, Nicholas Cardinal Cheong Jin-suk, Archbishop of Seoul is a known wearer of the cappello romano, complete with the red and gord and red tassels of a cardinal. I've never personally seen him wear it, but a friend of mine has.

Is there a similar hat without a cord on it? It seems to me that I have seen one of these before being worn without a cord (by a regular priest).

The Cardinal's hat in the picture is a modern creation (like red tabarros without gold trim, currently worn by a couple of cardinals). The real one had gold trim.

The excerpt from Nainfa indicates that the color of the band or cord on the cappello Romano distinguished between bishops(green) and archbishops(green and gold) - at least prior to the 1969 change. Did the same distinction hold in respect to the color of the cord for the pectoral cross - which I believe is now green and gold for both?

"The clerical hat, as here described, rather than the biretta, is the proper head-dress for a Prelate wearing his official costume outside of church ceremonies..."
Can the same be said about ordinary priests? When would a priest wear one of these and when (outside of ceremonies) would he wear a biretta?

I purchased my Cappello Romano in a hat shop in Santiago Spain, just across the street from Compostela.
The name of the store slips my mind...does any one know this store and would have it's proper name?

I can provide some nice pictures of the Capello Romano, all in straw for summer time:
1. The red straw Papal Saturno:

3. The black straw Saturno, worn by priest in summer. Very light and comfortable model:

Two questions:
1. Are there any other types of hats which the clergy may wear outside liturgical duties?
2. Is there any permissible type of headgear for deacons?

Balthasar,
As the post explains, the biretta is litugical. So if you wear a cassock outside of liturgy the "saturno" is the proper head-geat outside of church on the street (if you are a secular). But in my day the N.Y. clergy wore the bitetta when greeting people on the church steps after Mass even if they were not the celebrant: Msgr. with his purple pom, Jesuit with his three-corned.
If you are wearing a black suit and clericals, then a traditional black hat is perfectly okay.
As for deacons, I leave that to the experts. But when they wear black suit clerics, then the traditional black hat would be normal.
When did it become common to need to be given permission to wear a hat? The opposite used to be the practice.
