Pope Paul VI did well to wear it in 2005...

JM: you misunderstood the sentence - Benedict reintroduced it in 2005.

Man, I love Benedict XVI. This morning I woke up, and saw those less-than-spectacular Gothic vestments, and then I saw that there would be no cope and Mitre of Benedict XV, and I was severly dissappointed. But this makes up for everything!

Where is the stole like what is in the picture of John XXIII and Paul VI? I am a bit confused.

anom: As i said in the post, the stole, as well as the pectoral Cross, are not always worn with the choir dress, but only for certain occasions (this, by the way, is also true for the choir dress of priests and bishops). Such occasions are mainly those in which the pope himself is performing a liturgical function, e.g. a blessing. The choir dress (and this is a peculiarity of the pope which does not apply, for obvious reasons, to priests and prelates) is also worn for formal receptions of heads of state and ambassadors. In these cases, the stole is only worn if the respective head of state is Catholic. There are, I am sure, more details, but these are, I think, the basics.

Sexy? ...And he already wore a camauro.

Now I want to know if he also did the other custom for the Easter Octave? It used to be that during the Octave when the white mozetta is worn the Pope also wore green rather than red shoes. I noticed the Pope's shoes at mass and they were the usual red. So, I wonder if he switched to green shoes too?

Gregor,
to my knowledge, actually, the pectoral cross wasn't optional. The Pope only kept the custom to wear it under the mozzetta, as formerly also Cardinals and Bishops did. Card. Merry del Val was probably the last one to keep this custom.
You'll notice that, when wearing the cappa magna, also Cardinals and Bishops (almost) always kept this use, instead.

Great pictures and fascinating history of the customs.
Looking a bit more closely to the photo of John XXIII, it looks as if he is wearing the white mozzetta over the red one - you can see some dark material over the left arm and some white ermine below it. I guess wearing both would have kept him warm.

I think it's just a part of the armchair where the Pope is sitting...

VIVA IL PAPA!!! AD MULTOS ANNOS!!!
We have so much to be thankful for. God has given the Church a wonderful gift in this pope. Yes, he may not do things as quickly as we would like BUT look at where we were a mere two years ago! This is lightning speed for the Vatican.
(P.S. - did anyone notice that EWTN's altar setup has changed? It now looks more traditional! I bet this is thanks to our Holy Father Benedict too!)

Nicola - thanks for the detail regarding the older usage of wearing pectoralia and mozzette. I wonder why this changed.

Never heard about the green shoes for Easter. I thought that proper papal etiquette required matching colors on camauro, mozzetta, stole, and shoes. Which means white or red.

The Easter shoes of the Pope are indeed white, not green. There is a photo of Pius XII having his hand kissed by a violinist (who had just performed for him), and one sees the white shoes clearly.

The camauro should match the mozetta too - Blessed John XXIII restored its use after a very long desuetude, and so may have neglected to have a white one made.

What is that thing Paul VI is wearing with his coat of arms?

Dear anon,
That is simply the device for keeping the stole in order; usually it is just a tasseled cord.

Thanks for that picture, Ken. And the shoes are indeed white, as Q. Horatius Flaccus said. Somehow, the green didn't seem too likely to me anyway.

Photos or not the old custom was for the Pope's shoes in the Easter Octave to be G-R-E-E-N!

Marvellous!!! As CatholicGandhian said, this makes up for the disappoitment at Mass due to the rain. I wonder, is this mozzetta a new one made for Benedict XVI or is it one of those treasures rescued from the "dusty wardrobes"?
Also, I would like to know the source by which so many people seem to know that a cope and mitre of Benedict XV were meant to be worn for the Urbi et Orbi blessing. Anyway, a cope?? I thought that a cope was only worn when the Urbi et Orbi blessing was given alone (without a previous Mass, as in Christmas), but at Easter, with a previous Mass, the blessing was given with the Mass vestments (but with the tiara. There are several pictures of Popes giving it, with the chasuble and fanon clearly visible). Benedict XVI himself appeared at the loggia on Easter last year with the chasuble he wore at Mass.

This easter mozzetta was made in March 2006 together with a camauro also in white damask silk and ermine fur. Due to lack of consensus it was not worn until this year. HH of course did not wear the camauro.

Father Selvester, you intrigue me very much with your assurance re. green shoes. Any source? Not even Nabuco mentions it.
