In the top pic the cardinal in brown or what seems to be brown. Woud he be a fransican or a carmelite? or another order ?

Gravatar These pics are great..Is that the Palantine Guard in the second pic? Eveyone comments on the splendor of ceremony in those days..Is there a return to some of it in the cards?? And if no, why not?

Gravatar OK. You've got a Noble Guard, and you've got a galero. That means the latest it could be is 1968. The Pope looks like Pius XII. Do we have any further info on this?

Gravatar The Pope is John XXIII without a doubt. According to Roman Etiquette the cappa magna of a religious should be according to the color of his habit. For all Franciscans, I thought it was simply black, but in the consistory of 1962 John XXIII did make Juan Landazuri Ricketts OFM a cardinal, and as an Order of the Friars Minor he would of all people be the one wearing the brown.

The Far Sight is an INCREDIBLE blog. More watered silk and ermine than you'll ever see, also very interesting if you're curious about things such as cappa magna colors and variations. Worth adding to your favorites list for nice pictures!

Gravatar Yes, it is John XXIII for sure. Cardinal holding arm of the throne is Ottaviani, Cardinal Bishop of Ostia, who was blind. Thus, the holding on to the arm.

Gravatar Sorry, Ottaviani was Cardinal Deacon of Santa Dominica. Possibly Cardinal Proto-Deacon at the time.
Blind, nonetheless.

Gravatar Cardinal Ricketts is in another photo and is wearing scarlet.

Gravatar Franciscan cardinals wear grey: there is a splendid picture of Cardinal Ricketts so dressed in Tresors Unconnus du Vaticane. Today being the feast day of S. Sylvester Guzzolini it is worth remembering that Sylvestrian cardinals wore blue, although I don't know if there actually were any. This picture also shows the austerity Cappa Magna introduced by Pius XII after the war - it is one third of the length of the pre-war one.

Gravatar The picture of Cardinal Landazuri Ricketts Canon Ward mentions can also be seen on The Far Sight: http://thefarsight2.blogspot.com.../11/i- know.html

Gravatar Amazing yes that is the Noble Guard, They were abolished in 1970, also note the Galero that was abolished in the 1960's by Paul VI.

Also Prince Assistant to the Throne standing in Full Court Dress, still part of the Papal Household but now not seen.

What a pity.

Gravatar I have a hunch that the cardinal who is not wearing scarlet is Michael Cardinal Browne OP, made cardinal in the same consistory in 1962 as Cardinal Landazuri Ricketts OFM. It seems to my poor eyes that the cappa is black, not brown.

The Benedictine Cardinal Albareda and the Melkite Basilian Acacius Cardinal Coussa were made cardinals in the 1962 consistory, and one wonders where they are!

Gravatar The Cardinals in cappa and the imposition of the galero should return, even if the days upon days of protol and ceremony have to be left to the pages of history books - but the cardinalatial galero and the wearing of the cappa magna was just way too much history and symbolism to banish away - new cardinals after all are men who are selected, first of all, to be witnesses to the Faith even unto the shedding of their own blood, and are presumably elevated to the ranks of Princes of the Church. If kings are not crowned with paper crowns, then why shouldn't Princes of Christ's Church be able to wear watered-silk cappas and be invested in the true symbol of their unique rank [the galero]? I do not like to bash Paul VI, but some of his decisions really do leave you at a loss for words.

Gravatar "Also Prince Assistant to the Throne standing in Full Court Dress, still part of the Papal Household but now not seen."

I am glad someone at last mentions the Prince Assistant. It would be very interesting if the NLM makes a post dedicated to that topic, since, as John mentions, the charge still exists but the Prince Assistant to the Throne... doesn't assist at the Throne any more!!

Who is he nowadays? I remember having read something about prince Torlonia and prince Colonna, but does somewhat have pictures of them? It would be interestng to identify them at papal ceremonies, to see if they are present and when, and the place where they sit now.

Sad to see these traditions gone. I suppose the Prince doesn't assist the Pope because the reformed papal liturgy didn't want to show temporal power aspects any more. But then, why did they keep him as part of the Papal Household, and (what is more) with that very title name??

Gravatar For anyone wishing to determine the rules for cardinals' dress uniforms, there were actually rules for that. If you read Italian, you can look these rules up and download them from

http://www.dieter-philippi.de/ my...dante_1480.html

The literature is arranged by alphabet. Look for "Norme Ceremoniali per gli Eminentissimi Signori Cardinali".

Gravatar Sorry, that should read: "... does someone have pictures of them?".

Gravatar The two Aassistenti al Soglio, principe don Alessandro Torlonia and principe don Marcantonio Colonna, nowadays appear alternatively at the welcome of heeads of state in the cortile di San Damaso and escort them to the l'appartamento pontificio delle udienze; at papal mass they have their seats next to the diplomatic corps.

Gravatar J. G. Rathkay,

Thank you.

Gravatar I recommend everybody who is interrested in the circumstances of the magnificent old papal court to read the notes and reports of Marchese Giulio Sacchetti, the last hereditary quartermaster general of His Holiness:

Gravatar There is a photograph in the Catholic Herald in July showing the new Grand Master of the Order of Malta--His Most Enminent Higness Fra Matthew Festing-- being escorted to the papal audience chamber by the Prince Assistant, Swiss Guard etc---magnificent, it would be good to see it in colour
