Call me skeptical, but "massive pop success" usually -- as successful or as massive it may be -- because it is popular, means "passing fad". Like the last time chant became immensely popular, it ended up in a few Enigma tracks from "The Matrix Reloaded". Contemporary culture just doesn't have the attention capacity to make a timeless art a staple. Most people are definitely not the medievalist weirdos that really gush over this stuff. You know, people like us. Gah.

True enough, which is why the Church must always be its source and guardian.

"medievalist weirdos"
I prefer "Medievalist Snob" or "Antiquity Geek".

The last time chant got really popular, it ended up with a lot of people having one or a few chant CDs.
Why did it end there? Lack of context being provided for listeners. Lack of follow-up. There wasn't any clear, sustained effort that would provide new fans with a place to go from there.
If parishes had chant scholas running some kind of workshop back then, that would have been something. Even a chant appreciation class would have been something. Ironically, it would probably be easier for most people to run something like that as part of a secular continuing education program (like the fun classes and workshops most parks programs run) than in a parish.
But we could do it if we really wanted to.
