Gravatar I'm trying not to get too excited, Michael. I work freelance all over the place and now add travel fees to just about every place I go. The real question is predicting the future cost. My brides are booking for 2009. And I'm starting to turn down long-distance jobs, referring them to colleagues closer to the event.

However, thanks for the heads-up.

Gravatar Mary Jane,

Well, to be sure, $ .585 is hardly generous. And yes, LORD KNOWS what gas will cost this time next year. The prices could be sorely prohibitive.

Gravatar I laugh at you SUV-dwellers in my tiny Honda whilst driving all over the state playing weddings on a thimble of gasoline!

Actually I just crunched the numbers: 13 cents per mile on my worst fuel mileage. Which is typically what I charge, if I have to drive more than a half hour.

Gravatar Gavin -
The mileage reimbursement is meant to recover not just gas, but oil changes, tuneups and other maintenance as well. You should be charging more than $.13 per mile.

The Social Security tax is actually 15.3%. But who's counting?

Gravatar "The Social Security tax is actually 15.3%. But who's counting?"

I am. ;-)

Gravatar This is, I understand, not the forum for sniping at one another, but...

"I laugh at you SUV-dwellers in my tiny Honda whilst driving all over the state playing weddings on a thimble of gasoline!"

...is the kind of smug slef-righteousness that is a complete turn off. And I dare say just the kind of thing that won't get me out of my 300hp, loud, fuel guzzling sports car anytime soon. The cost of gas isn't touching my life style yet!

Gravatar Looks like I made the right decision - buying a house a 5-minute bike ride from my parish job.

Gravatar I normally don't hock my wares on this post, but please see more about this and other items on Tax Info Blog:

I'm a frequent commentor, so hopefully this won't be unwelcome.

Gravatar You can keep track of mileage and deduct the percentage of miles driven for business for all your auto expenses instead if it suites you.

Gravatar Scott Smith,

Fascinating. I wish I knew that three months ago, as I spent about $1500 on my car in November 2007. But thanks for sharing.
