Beautiful chasuble, his lordship is wearing. But that Mitre... When are they goin to ditch that old thing? I mean I have seen him wear it on many occasions, and to be truthful, well its been done to death! Gold would have been more appropriate...
where are all the hungry church mice when you need them? LOL

The style of the embroidery and the use of scenes reminds me of some images I have seen of the late mediaeval or renaissance vestments. Very unique.

Beautiful chasuble and dalmatic, but isn't it rather out of place to use a chasuble depicting the Pieta at the Easter Vigil?

Not to mention that the scene on the dalmatic appears to be one of the Stations of the Cross - at the Easter Vigil?

The vestments do show the Passion and death of Christ, and also "his appearance after his resurrection to the disciples at Emmaus" -- which is what I believe you see on the front of the dalmatic.
So one is getting elements of the Resurrection within these as well.
Beyond that, I'd also note that at Easter Vigil (or Easter generally) we don't cover up images of the crucified on the altar cross and so forth, even though the cross is covered at other times during Lent.
In fact, quite the opposite. These are actually uncovered and again revealed by this time.

Quite a striking set of vestments, and I'm glad that His Eminence would have vestments in this style worn on this most holy night of the year. I do wish he worn the pontifical dalmatic (in addition to its theological significance, I find it helps to fill out the chasuble's narrowness at the shoulders)and had not worn the simple mitre (it is Easter!), but I am pleased.

Anyone want to take bets whether or not Cardinal Mahoney will wear a Baroque chasuble in one of his baroque mission churches sometime before he reaches the age of 75?

Impressive vestments. Too bad Cardinal Egan is so tall, he must have given up trying to find properly fitted vestments years ago.

Spellman wore it on Easter Sunday, 1967. He is pictured wearing it in the episcopal residence with General Anastasio Somoza and his wife(from Nicaragua). There is a photo of John XXIII behind them. He is wearing a beautiful precious mitre, which the cardinal could have dug out too.
from the book,"The American Pope" by John Cooney.

Regarding the pic of Mahony: That pic is found in J.-C. Noonan's 'The Church Visible'. Mahony is taking possession of his cardinalatial stational church in Rome. That particular fiddleback, most likely, was in Rome the whole time, and has stayed in that church's sacristy ever since.
So Father E's wager is still on. Will The Great M ever wear a fiddleback "in one of his baroque mission churches sometime before he reaches the age of 75?" I'm betting against.
However -- to change the subject -- the bigger question is this: Will Pope Benedict wear a fiddleback when he offers Mass in that same cathedral on his visit here? And will he offer it ad orientem? That is the question we have to ponder.

In his remarks during Mass, Cardinal Eagan mentioned that the vestments had been comissoned for the centennial of the Archdiocese and that he was using them in observance of the Archdiocese's
bicentennial being celebrated this year.

Betting against that. That picture was taken in Rome, being in LA, I've NEVER seen M wear anything, well worth mentioning here anyway.
