Gravatar "should he decide use the traditional Mass proper to his Order--as, with his provincial's permission, he has the right to do."

This is an interesting point. I have specifically heard from others that the motu proprio did not give permission to the liturgical books of 1962 outside the Roman rite.

Can you please back this up, as I would like to be able to understand how to defend such an argument, one way or the other. Many thanks.

Gravatar Mark, I'm sure Fr Thompson will give you a more complete answer, but in the meantime: If I'm not mistaken, this has nothing to do with Summorum Pontificum, but is the rule which has been in force in the Order of Preachers since they adopted the Roman Rite in the 1960s - a priest may celebrate the Dominican Rite, if his provincial permits it.

Gravatar Dear Mark,

By going to Dominican Liturgy and clicking the link "Canonical Status of the Dominican Rite" you will find the documentation (Rescript of June 2, 1969) and commentary. Dominicans have had the right to say, with permission of the provincial (or master of the order) since 1969--and have taken advantage of it, as you can tell by reading this blog.

Gravatar Ah, right! Thank you, both of you. I was unaware of the rescript, hence what I was saying about Summorum Pontificum.

Thank you again.
