In particular, with regard to vestments, it would be good to get a list of convents and other places where vestments are still made by hand. We all know of the catalogues where one can buy the mass-produced items. There are indeed nice mass-produced vestments, but nothing beats having something made by hand by someone who was praying while she made it!
I look forward to seeing this project unfold! Many thanks, Shawn.

For the list:
It should be noted that Loreto Publications is currently reprinting the Roman Ritual.
http://www.loretopubs.org/
However, it is not at all clear which volumes they are reprinting. For example, their Roman Ritual Volume I says that it has an imprimatur of 1950. I think the Roman Ritual was revised in 1959, and the last corresponding English translation to be approved was provided in 1964 or something like that. So we do need to be careful and check into these items before we buy them.
And it might be helpful to email these publishers and let them know that we would like them to reprint the items that have actually been approved, and not just the items that constitute memorabilia or resources for scholarship.

While at the workshop held by the FSSP we were given a 2 disc CD set that has all of the prayers of the priest and sever for the Low Mass with the propers for Trinity Sunday and disk 2 has the sung parts of the High Mass. The set has about 130 tracks of spoken and sung parts. While not particularly slow in pace I would not say it is fast either. Very Helpful indeed! I would attempt to contact Our Lady of Gualdalupe Seminary to see if they are available.

Don't forget the 1961 Graduale Romanum. You can't have a High Mass without notation.

And yes Virginia there was a 1962 Lectionary. My concern now is to locate such a lectionary ,which of course is one book,or preferably the two book version-Book of the Epistles ,Book of the Gospels. If I cant find one (what happened to them all? Most churches used to have solemn high mass at least on the greater feasts)I guess I will just print the Latin texts from the missal and find an ornate cover.I am at present taking some of my present vestments sets-chasuble and two dalmatics (when I had two deacons)and having a seamstress create maniples from the extra stole.I also need humeral veils-except white-.I believe that the best way to address the vestment issue is to get at least one solemn set as a start.I would go to St.Bede's or the company in New York who does St.Clements in Philadelphia or go ,as I did earlier ,to Slabbinck and custom order. They will do it and do it by hand in the European fashion.

The Benedictines of Mary (currently in Kansas City, MO) make fantastic vestments. You can see some samples and a price guide at http://www.benedictinesofmary.or.../
vestments.html . Also, for Latin training, the St. Boniface Pittsburg Latin Mass Community has on its website altar server training MP3s...see http://www.pittsburghlatinmass.o...m/
resources.htm . While these only include the parts of the Mass where a server would respond, it could also help priests with many parts of the Mass (prayers at the foot of the altar, the Confiteor, etc...).

Daniel: thanks for the references.
I just downloaded the "priest response only" volume and I have to say, I hope priests will pronounce the parts better than that! Yikes! I appreciate the effort they have made, but the person who recorded these responses really does have poor pronunciation.

Great Idea! I know priests who would love to celebrate Mass and the Sacraments according to the extraordinary use, at least occasionally, but who lack the "equipment", or who don't even know exactly what "equipment" one needs.

I'm a bit mystified as to why there is a concern about vestments. Presumably one can use the same vestment for the extraordinary form as for the ordinary, only adding a maniple. Why would someone need to get different vestments?

Also, a box of those red paperback missals for the people in the pews would be nice. And I've seen similar paperbacks with the propers and readings in English for every Sunday.

If you contact SPXX, I know..., they have a DVD of their Professor of Liturgy who walks you through the low mass. It's a decent presentation. I was able to follow along. They still have the second Confiteor before communion but at least you are able to see the movements, gestures etc. that are needed. Its a lot better than reading O'Connell which can be daunting. They will also send a small set of Altar cards and a section from the Missal with the ordinary prayers, the canon and two prefaces. And its free. I hope they will republish the Epistolarium (?) with the readings for High Mass. BTW CM Almy makes maniples for all the vestments they sell. I even heard that the Holy Rood Guild may be thinking about making Roman Vestments.

Ebay always has tridentine vestments, but they're rarely in complete sets. You can find altar cards there too, as well as candle sticks or anything else you might need. http://www.kingrichards.com/ also sells old vestments, candle sticks and altar cards.
It will be hard enough convincing priests to say the Extraordinary Rite for their congregations, and probably impossible to convince them to spend $1000 buying a new set of vestments when the parishes polyester vestments will do. Of course, polyester isn't in the "spirit" of the Extraordinary Form, but that won't matter to someone offering the Tridentine Rite through clenched teeth.
It's a shame all those bishops who feel the need to give priests an exam before they let them say the Extraordinary Rite aren't also giving courses. How can you make an exam obligatory and deny people the resources they would need to pass it?

Yes, a previous poster is correct...eBay has altar missals and altar cards. They are all reasonably priced. The altar cards typically come framed.

Certainly I would recommend any priest buying and studying Dom Alcuin Reid OSB's "Ceremonies of the Roman Rite Described" which is the "latest" edition of Fortesque/O'Connell's work and is 'up to date' i.e. for 1962 Usage. (Easy to read and full of useful directions for the celebrant.)
A quick remedy for maniples, if one's vestment sets are modern (and still available) - simply aquire another matching stole of the set you have and I'm sure a willing member of the faithful could be persuaded to cut it down to size! Polyster or not! I don't think it necessary to spend lots of money on new vestments if one's parochial or personal finances are already stretched. (However, it is amazing what bargains can be won on Ebay auctions... a colleague recently won an 19C French Latin cloth of gold five piece (Low) Mass set for £250!)
St Paul's Bookshops sell nicely printed and moderately illuminated Altar Cards which can be framed (or laminated) for under £20 GBP. Ebay is a good source for Altar Cards too (as has been mentioned).
Epistle, Gospel and Requiem Mass books do come up on Ebay too - but rarely and in great demand. I hope a publisher might think to reproduce these. As do too Altar Missals - some already annotated in pencil for 1962 use from the first time around!
There are a lot of "original" objects (vestments, books etc) floating around in sacristies and convents, church basements etc... it's worth checking them out! Perhaps an appeal in a diocesan newsletter might produce some interesting responses and results? (Anglicans and Old Catholics have been sourcing such items in this way since some of us "dumped" them or threw them out!)
I humbly suggest that for any priest/parish just starting out on the TLM - concentrate on Low Mass first and progress to Missa Cantata rather than aim too high ie a full High Solemn Mass. Allow yourselves the time to grow through the liturgy becoming familiar with it and the language and accruing gradually relevant and necessary items.
Praying for your success!

Shawn,
I have created a large set of altar cards that I inserted into dignified frames from a craft store. I think they're quite beautiful and everyone comments on them.
Perhaps I will send you PDF versions and you can decide if they'd be suitable to provide via NLM. Then, if you'd like, I could also make smaller, more standardized versions.

P.S. As an easy solution to Epistle and Gospel books... SSPX (we know?!) have Propers available on line for printing... A leather bound presentation portfolio available in most stationers would suffice with the printed required reading inside...

Very few churches actualy had an a seperate book for the epistles and the Gospels at High Mass.
In general, most churches used an extra copy of the Missale Romanum at High Mass.

If your parish pastor won't or can't afford to purchase the Roman or Gothic vestments and appropriate altarware, then perhaps a support group could be formed to raise funds to acquire the necessary items. This is what our group has done.
In fact we've filed for our state non-profit corporation papers.

At this pointin time, priority should be getting materials for priests and altar servers to pronounce the Latin correctly and forming a decent schola. New vestments come after you have a stable congregation.

Since I have worked with vestments for many years may I suggest that 2 basic colors vestment sets are enough to begin to offer the TLM, a gold color(not metallic)and purple. Gold substitutes for white, red and green. Purple is for penitential seasons and can be substituted for black if black isn't available. These can be very basic sets--no edge trim and some less expensive fabric. As money becomes available the priest can upgrade his vestments if he would like.
For priests who are having someone make Roman vestments for them, do not
use a satin lining or another slick fabric for lining. The chasuble will slip around and not stay in place. A good quality poly/cotton poplin makes a nice lining in these.
I'm more that willing to help women who want to learn to make linens, albs and vestments get started. I am currently teaching several women by email, phone and with CD's to make vestments.
If there are very poor priests out there who can not possibly afford vestments they may contact me and I'll do what I can to help them.

I do not know if any here are acquainted with the lectionary and Missale Romanum (Latin 1970 missal)put out by Opus Dei.It has beautiful leather and the text is printed beautiful. The pictures are very lovelyand inspiring much better than the sketches that pass for art in the editio typica.Hopefully they will put out a similar version of the 62 missal in honor of their founder. Also a word of warning to those who use or are going to buy the missal (62)taht has the approbation of Cardinal O'Connor. At least in my copy they omit the name of St.Joseph in the Canon. By the way in the 62 missal you cannot substitute purple for black vestments.

Fr. McAfee -- there may be a Gospel Book down the street from you. I remember seeing, I think, two of them in the library of Blessed Sacrament about five years ago. The library moved since then to a different part of the building, so there's a chance the books were disposed of, but it's worth a visit/call to the pastor if you are going to start traditional High Masses in September. (And I'm sure that parish would not miss them.)
