Gravatar Shawn,

Do you have any photos of Byzantine Rite Catholics celebrating the Divine Liturgy?

Gravatar A rubrical query: I notice the book is on the epistle side for the prayers; should it not be in the centre?

Gravatar Jesus goes in the centre. Missal goes on the Gospel side for offertory and canon. Epistle side is used for EVERYTHING else. That is the authentic Roman tradition.

Gravatar Dear "Raving Papist",
For photos and video of the Byzantine Rite as celebrated by Ukrainian Catholics visit my homepage www.saintelias.com
A blessed and holy Pascha to you.

Gravatar Dear Fr Kennedy,

Thank you very much. BTW, please don't take the "Raving" as indicating an interest in folding all the rites into the Roman one. Some days, the Byzantine Rite is all that keeps me going.

In Christ,
RP

Gravatar In regards to the picture. This seems to be the Mass of the Presanctified, as before the 1956 revision. As many of you know, that ceremony "looked" more Mass like.

In the 1962 Rite the book is placed in the center and the Solemn Collects are done there; celebrant flanked by the subdeacon & deacon.

Gravatar I know, I know, I hate to get so picky, but c'mon, what's with all the lace? It's Good Friday, after all! Hardly in the line of tradition.

Gravatar Dear Anon,

These albs and surplices are virtually the only ones they have, at least the only ones of good quality for major liturgical celebrations. I should know; I do the laundry and ironing.

Gravatar Anon, I'm sure Ms. Ross can put you in touch with the right folks so you can donate a complete set of plain surplices!

My parish has the same problem... Not enough lace free surplices to go around.

Gravatar Vestments made of velvet have always appeared to me to be especially difficult to care for -- not only would they more easily pick up lint and dust, but also velvet can sometimes be flattened or otherwise damaged. They also seem so heavy.

Was this style use primarily in northern, colder climates?

Gravatar If lace is all ya got, should there be a scruple about it? It's a surplice, it's an alb. Seems customary. There isn't anything in any rubrics that say, "Lace is supressed durring Lent & Passiontide".

Gravatar Someone posted on another thread that the whole thing about no lace during Lent is a myth, and they sort of gave an authority to back up their claim. It would be nice if someone with the requisite books or what have you could look this up and send Shawn or someone an authoritative reference so that the question could be settled.

Gravatar Transitional Deacon:
Velvet weight depends on many factors, density of threads, and material used. I know many velvet vestments which are very, very lightweight, moreso than a brocade or damask. Much of the weight of a vestment also depends on the lining and inter-lining. Remember that polyester "silk" does not breathe and therefore seems heavier and/or hotter. However it wears very well and is easier to work with in making vestments.

Velvet is very temperamental! The biggest problem is that yes, if not stored properly, it can look unkempt. The biggest problem is that it wears out unevenly, and there is simply nothing anyone can do about it. That is why it is best used for orphreys only.

Gravatar I love those beautiful black vestments. It looks like a type of velvet which is so.....bold!

Gravatar If you don't like the lace how about ponying up some cash and give them plain ones?
