I totally agree with you that neither organic or conventional food is entirely safe. I also agree that the E coli outbreak is a big deal and there has been many cases recently and in the past (however not all linked to organic lettuce and spinach). My biggest problem with the conventional industry is it's disregard for the environment. I agree that no credible studies have shown that organic food is healthier, but chemicals used in agriculture and the hormones and antibiotics used in meat production are entering our water systems and even into our drinking water. The effects are unknown at this time, but we didn't know the harm of DDT for the longest time either. Your comments seem to only focus on the short term and the individual and ignore the long term. I believe for the benefit of the Earths' future we need to reduce our dependence on chemicals for crop production just as we need to reduce our burning of fossil fuels. True, we can't do it today, but we should work at it. As for GMO's my biggest objection is the copyrighting of plants. I'm more opposed to the corporate rule of organisms than the health scares. If you want a company like Monsanto to have dominion over the future of what we eat, keep promoting GMO's. As for me, I'll stand by the Europeans.

Gravatar Hrm. Looks like you may have jumped the gun on calling this one an organic problem:
"The tainted greens -- conventionally grown spinach and not organic -- came from one of the farms that supplies spinach to Natural Selection, said Samantha Cabaluna, spokeswoman for Natural Selection."
