The ID card is less the point than the pretext for a national population register, which will connect all state records on each individual, and permit "the personalisation of public services", i.e. direct management of each citizen's life. Blair's government is urging other European Union countries to adopt equivalent systems.
On the bright side, ALL opposition parties are committed to repeal, including Mr Cameron's Conservatives. "We must tear it down," he has said on several occasions.
