Not an HL Mencken but one I find rather useful these days:
"Anyone interested in defining what 'freedom' means is someone looking to abuse that new definition."
Everybody "knows" what free means. 
I only wish that were the case. I have had people quite seriously come up with definitions that are rather bizarre and seem to think they were being rational.

At some point the concept needs to be relegated to the status of something like the word "I". There's no way to define it except in terms of itself, yet everybody already knows what it means.
I posit that if 'freedom' is taken in the same light, then all these mental contortions fade into the wayside; real direction can be taken.
It's a fuzzy picture, sure, but it's a *definite* fuzzy picture.
Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
