What has happened to "conservatism?!" How did the fascists manage to replace the small-government conservatives?
Charles: It's not too hard to answer. The fundamentalists left the Democratic Party (most had been on the radical/populist Left) and infiltrated the GOP. They brought into the party their own authoritarianism. So the church of socialist William Jennings Bryan became the church of neo-con George Bush (with almost the same policies down the line). In the early 1900s they were considered on the Left. Now they are called the Right. The terms are bankrupt intellectually. You might find these two essays of use:
