I will be very interested in seeing what happens when Romney runs in 2012. I believe that whatever conservative is doing well against him will get some rather unexpected support.
The Mormon community is willing to give generously of time and money in support of community goals. They are (in general) well off, motivated to work, and, well, they breed. Given that, there is a certain amount of folly in asserting that age demographics support policies that Mormons oppose.
Because of the very strong communitarian culture of the LDS church, members will support causes because the church does. One of my coworkers is Mormon. Nice guy. Very cosmopolitan and has no problems with gays at all. But I would bet dollars to donuts that he sent money to Prop 8 because the church wanted it.
What I think is likely to trip up the LDS agenda is their lack of separation of spiritual and secular activities. While lawyers will probably be able to keep actual moneys straight, there will be a lot of "that church mailing list could be really useful in this political campaign" slip-ups.
Protests at Mormon temples actually, though, might help. One of the LDS church's most amazing features is that, at the top, it is officially a gerentocracy. And the elderly are notoriously risk-adverse.

Meanwhile, one of Mormonism's fierce opponents is on the comeback trail. Pastor Ted is back:

Fritz: Yes, they breed like rabbits compared to everyone else. But then there are all those spirit babies waiting to be born and they are obligated to give them a Mormon home. However, their apostasy rate is far, far higher than they like to admit. The number of jack Mormons is massive. The church still fakes membership figures in order to show growth. As I noted, in spite of their birth rates, the church had almost zero growth -- implying they are losing almost as many as they breed.
They are also lowing power in Utah as Mormons declined as a percentage of the population in every county and are minorities in some counties already. This means their young are no longer surrounded by Saints but by evil Gentiles and that sort of contact makes it harder for them to retain their young.
