In the country I'm living, the catholic church gets a cut of the taxes. And you know what? That's the part of my money that is spent the best!
First of all, it makes the pope more awesome. Maybe it's because I'm from Europe, and you might call me a Bourgeois for that :P, but all that gold and other bling-bling really appeals to me, and I have no problem with people wearing crowns and robes riding limousines
On the other hand, all money spent on luxury is money not spent on fighter jets or surveillance cameras. All the time spent at ceremonies and parties is spent not making more stupid laws, campaigning against gays or contraception and screwing up the average people.
The last G8 summit cost 576 millions or so, or seven Eurofighters, and every page in the boulevard press about Prince Harry's binge drinking is one page less spewing racist, socialist or otherwise sick bullshit. So let Merkel and Berlusconi feast for world peace. Let the royals drink for less racism and more harmony!

DS: I don't mind if you want to give money to the Pope. But why do you assume it is good to force other people to give him money? Tax money is taken by threat of force from everyone. Would Jesus use Ceasar to put a gun to someone's head to relieve them of the money they earned?
I don't have a problem with limos, gold or fine robes. You are missing my point entirely. I do have problems with an old hypocrite preaching that the consumption of others is evil while neglecting his own excessive consumption. The issue I had was not the wealth but the hypocrisy.

Of course you're right with the hypocrisy. But that's nothing noteworthy. Sometimes I wonder if there are still people listening to the ruling elite's daily blah blah.
Regarding the tax money, I'm just glad that people are forced to pay pointless things rather than being forced to pay one more bad thing.

DS: Your position seems to be similar to saying that one should rejoice when slaves are washing the floors because they could out lashing one another for the master. This is one way oppression continues. The rulers convince the slaves that other rulers would be worse so the slaves should surrender to them. As long as one is not the worst slavemaster on the block slavery can continue.
