This would be one reason why I find most University educations a waste of time and the environment as a whole a dangerous one for any free thinking people. God forbid, in a place of learning you dissent from the PC mindset or tradition.

Gravatar I live in Indianapolis, so I decided to voice my objection to the university. I spoke to Amy Warner, Vice-Chancellor of External Affairs, who told me that the problem was not with the reading of the book, but "the environment that was created" by the reading of the book. That some people objected to the reading made it a "workplace issue" rather than a censorship issue.

Warner began our conversation by patronizingly telling me she would like my suggestions for getting the "real story" out, but she hung up on me when I told her that her explanation made things worse and that the policy is Stalinist. Click!

Gravatar The IUPUI library has the offending book in its collection. Is the university's library guilty of racial harassment?

Gravatar Sounds like typical doublespeak. I should, in defense of universities, mention that I also found some great professors who became friends and allies. And, in at least three courses I took, where the prof asked me to guest lecture in the course -- which I found amusing since I was taking the class. I only had one two professors who actually lost their tempers totally when I disagreed with them. One went ballistic in the quad after reading my column in the student daily. But they were the exception actually. I would only rate three professors as being intolerant. I had two who were utterly incompetent. And two decided they were libertarians while I was taking their classes. And none of them were in the econ department which is where you usually find them. The libertarian profs I had were in journalism, philosophy and sociology. One of my psychology profs was Szazian, as am I. So my experience was one that I thought was basically good. Though I confess some professors were harder to teach than others. : )

Gravatar "The libertarian profs I had were in journalism, philosophy and sociology"

Goodness gracious great balls of fire! Is the world all turning topsy-turvy? :D

Talk about getting caught with a "bad" book in university...when I was a first-year at Auckland University, I was sitting in a discussion class where nothing was going on, so I pulled out Atlas Shrugged (Back then, I was obsessed with it) and started to read. I got into a discussion with a fellow student, mind you, student, not professor, who said "Isn't that book a bit like Mein Kampf?"

...I was speechless...

I knew this book is often regarded in places in the same way a steaming sex novel would be in a Southern Baptist church, so I kind of expected it. But...Mein Kampf...

In his defense, I'll bet my fellow student only got told that by someone else and hasn't read the book.

But these people at Purdue are even worse...I mean, at least that student didn't tell the professors and ask them to snatch the book out of my hands. That poor janitor got worse than even that. Is there a place where I can send an E-mail of support to that guy?

Gravatar Well it was true. My journalism prof said that after he spent a year of reading my columns in the umiversity paper he decided he was a libertarian. My philosophy prof wrote articles for professional journals in support of libertarian theory. My sociology prof was my "mentor" in the program I was in and became the faculty adviser for the student libertarian group I started on campus. In fact he was in touch with me not long ago and sent me a whole file of clippings of my columns that he had saved all these years. The psych prof wasn't libertarian but a Szaszian so I really enjoyed his course.

Most my profs were decent. I had one history prof who was a far Left type and he and I argued in class all the time but he remained pleasant and read all my columns each week. I had two profs who were awful but because they were just lousy teachers who couldn't lecture worth a damn.

The only problem was a woman who was brought in to run the journalism department as an affirmative aciton hiring. She was the only one who gave me grief on my articles, to a degree she didn't do to anyone else in class. Yet I was the only one in the class who was getting material published. Her big article was some fluff piece on garlic, she was talentless as a journalist and never held a real writing position. But the university wanted more women in leadership roles so they hired her from outside the school, ignoring profs who actually knew their stuff in favor of this nobody. Of course she's never moved from there -- who else would want her?

Gravatar Well, that's what hiring based solely on gender or race does.

Good on your professors, including the history one who's a leftie. Disagreement is always fine as long as both parties believe in each other's basic decency and honesty, and don't start saying things like "you only say that because you are white/privileged/in denial", etc. Your history professor didn't sound like he did that, though.

I had a biology prof who - shock, horror - understood that the problem with overfishing is not "greed" or capitalism but the "tragedy of the commons". Most environmentalists, including professors, are of the former type, so I was really pleased. He specializes in aquaculture though, so I suppose one could argue he has a "vested interest"...:D

Gravatar Educating oneself raises concern from one's masters...err...union reps?

Gravatar Affirmative Action offices and so called equal employment opportunity offices are bastions of hate. They are the perfect place and weapon for people that hate people who are not like them. It is just a fact. Unfortunately the federal government has given these people a very big stick and none are qualified to use it.

Gravatar .
This is a terrible story. This Lillian Charleston and Marguerite Watkins are racists and a fascist wannabes, certainly NOT worthy of being educators. They should be fired without question, and sued. They are terrible and despicable human beings, who obviously hate white people. Racists to their core.

Gravatar They want us to be mindless sheep, and totally non controversalists. If it had been me in that situation, then next day I'd have been reading a copy of Hustler magazine, with the cover very visible. I may live in California, but I was born in Indpls, and I know the kind of narrow minded staff of higher learning. We had some big changes in the college routine after WW II when service persons from the war went back to government financed education, and met some of these morons that ran the College's with there Ivy League ideas still intact. Womans rights are right up to a point, just as racial rights are right up to a point, but when there is excessive stupidity the results are negative. My Quaker ancestors attitude taught me that racism was wrong, then I met blacks who did so much crime, as their right to fight back, I find myself always expecting the worst from that race. Visiting area of Indpls where blacks are predominant proves my point when I see all the destruction, and fear to be there at any hour of the day that I might be attacked. Too much of anything is too much.

Gravatar Mr Cordell: Your racist clap trap is not welcome here anymore than your lunatic ideas about the "new world order" and the other garbage you push.

Gravatar I'd hope I have the last laugh, but then it means our nation has lost our sovereignty, and that will be bad.

How do you account for the fact that 533,000 people lost jobs this last November, and on Dec 3rd, another 22,000 in one day?

Then the fact that Obama is not a citizen, he is in fact an illegal alien, and he has to be stopped taking office as our President before this farce continues. The facts will come out, and I will be vindicated.

Those who are too blind to see the treason happening in our nation have to be led by we who know what is going on. Have a Happy New Year.

Gravatar Don: I guess you didn't read my previous post. Bye. This is not the place for crazed conspiracy mongering racists. You won't be back.

Gravatar Having supervised Keith, I am convinced that he did this with the knowledge that he would make trouble. Keith is student, yes but he was working as a janitor before he started taking classes. So the "student" is a misnomer, because he actually an employee.
Regardless, knowing that Keith is a troublemaker and a rabble rouser, I can only guess that he was reading the material, not because he sided with Notre Dame, but because he empathized with the Klan. Keith has tried the "reverse discrimination" thing before and failed. He is surrounded by blacks in his line of work, most are his co-workers and others are his supervisors usually.

This was calculated, but he again failed to get any money, which is his true agenda.

Gravatar I hesitated posting the above which seems calculated as a smear job. I am surprised that some who writes phrases like "he actually an employee" and "he again failed to get any money, which is his true agenda" (confusing past tense with present tense), supervised anyone.

There is no verifiable evidence offered to substantiate any of the claims made by this anonymous individual. No sources are cited. No evidence is offered. It is merely conjecture on the part of the writer. I suspect the writer is connected to the employee who filed the complaint in the first place.

I don't see these claims making sense. If Keith was out for money exactly how did he get this woman to cooperate in the plan? Did he pay her to file a stupid complaint against him? And did he bribe the official to make a stupid ruling? Sorry, this just doesn't wash.

MPA: if you have evidence, identify yourself and present some documentation for your claims.
