And yet, Passions, with multiple gay plotlines, was not saved. Sigh!
And the WWF, where it's all about ratings, had a (kayfabe, and campy, too) gay plotline way back in 2002. I can't find a good clip on YouTube. Even the rednex aren't overly bothered.
I believe things have changed a lot in most of Western society. My nephew recently came out as gay while in high school. Not that I was terribly surprised, I suspected as much for several years. He lives with his grandmother who is not particularly bothered by it -- she had a gay son herself. It seems that a lot of high school students who are gay are open about it -- that never happened in my days in high school.
I read one incident where a school principal was upset about some students making out in the hallways. So she demanded all teachers provide lists of all "couples" they knew about which she posted on a bulletin board. This was all couples whether or not they violated the make out rules. The list included same sex couples. One boy was rather upset since his mother got the list and he hadn't told her yet. The mother was upset because she figured the school had no business printing the list. Apparently this boy felt more comfortable being known as gay with his classmates than with his parents. That is a big cultural shift.
The fundies need to know the culture war is over -- they lost. Now it is just a matter of time before they get used to it and move on to some other hysteria.
