Gravatar You should leave the porch light on and place a sign in your garden, which says:

WARNING!
SCARY SEX OFFENDER AHEAD

See it as a compromise.

Gravatar Most children small enough to be abducted at the door of a registered sex offender (RSO) are accompanied by an adult guardian for supervision. I thus suspect that the purpose of the law has more to do with degrading RSOs even further rather than protecting children. Otherwise the same nanny police statist lawmakers could have instead passed a law requiring parental/adult supervision of tricker treaters under a certain age.

Gravatar The only remedy is to actually not be home. Hence hanging out in bars is a good solution.

Gravatar I love your take on this whole thing. It is one aspect of the sex offender round up before halloween I hadn't considered.

I found a list of Colorado's 100 most wanted unregistered sex offenders and one of them was 6 years old when he was convicted of a sex crime! That kid is now on the "most wanted" list, because at 20 he failed to update his address to the police.

Gravatar going out to a party ... being at work ... I have both to cover me this time.

If I were home, I might put out the lights, and then put up a sign:

No, I'm not a sex offender ... I just hate little kids in costumes begging for my candy!

Gravatar I say go to the bar early in the day, get shitfaced, then go driving when the kiddies are out begging candy. Problems eliminated!

Gravatar I would love to see the day when somebody challenges these insane laws in court, takes the case to the Supreme Court and wins.

These laws are definitely unconstitutional - to subject a person for a lifetime of humiliation and degradation is cruel and unusual punishment, no doubt, and especially so when the original offense was petty (such as peeing on the street).

Yes, I know... it's not very likely to happen... but a tiny bit more likely than true libertarians being elected in sufficient numbers to effect any change...

Gravatar Great article and great comments.
I placed it on my web site

Gravatar I'll add this article to my page on Halloween Laws:

Severin, could you email me and show me the one who picked up a sex case at age 6? I have some articles here:

Gravatar And don't forget that modern conservatives have undermined the courts and their powers arguing that they must be subject, not to Constitutional protections, but the will of the majority. So if the courts do rule to protect rights, which is their job, the Right will scream activist judges. The Constitution is no longer the highest law of the land according to conservatives, raw passion, prejudice, stereotype and bigotry are.

Gravatar Put up a sign saying Halloween is an un-christian satanic holiday. They won't think your a sex offender - just a ultra-evangelical.

You're call which is less preferable
