Actually the Republican machine WASN'T bigger this time, Kerry and Bush ended up spending about the same amount of money. The Democrats just ran a jackass.
Didn't really mean financial backing, but you're right. Kerry probably had more money to work with in the end, but the incumbent always has the advantage for obvious reasons. Ideology has more value in this instance than cash.
