You know submariner what is completely amazing to me is that the vast amount of staunch republicans actually believe that it matters that we give these people democracy. That democracy is the key to their salvation and stability. Republicans are by nature verbose pugilists that conceal their true agendas behind the cover of freedom from all. I don’t think any disputes Iran as a rising threat to America. However, would this be the case if we decided to clean our own mess up (i.e. Katrina and her aftermath) instead of rushing to solve problems where none truly exist in the first place.
I have never believed that Obama or Clinton would be able to promise full troop withdrawal. I am not familiar with all of the ins and outs regarding the politics of troop withdrawal but then again its use of common sense that immediate withdrawal will leave Iraq in more disarray than we left Vietnam.
Recall that the Iraq War was conceived to show the world what American power could achieve in the age of unipolarity. A fair number of Republicans, Chuck Hagel, Dick Lugar, and Ron Paul types, are quite disenchanted. By minimizing calls for economic justice, Obama should be able get a generous share of these folks - the way Reagan got Democrats. The military elites, as suggested by the recent resignation of Admiral Mallon from CENTCOM, are also divided about this agenda. The ethnonationalist and evangelical segments may welcome a Middle Eastern conflagration but it isn't embraced by Republicans as a whole. For political reasons, as members of the ruling party, they can't be too shrill. That's the job of the opposing party.
Point taken, members of the Republican Party that are disenfranchised will probably lend Obama some aid but I don’t think they will be as visible as the Regan Democrat simply because they will have to keep their constituents pleased
