The family was generous in allowing a public memorial; however, it was their decision, and the onus of payment should be on them. Taxpayers should not be expected to bear the burden of someone's funeral, other than perhaps a president...

I remember hearing about this thinking it must be some kind of a joke. The family should absolutely have been responsible for the costs. Didn't they also sell tickets to his memorial service? Where did that money go?
