Gravatar To be precise the terrestrial system is called Freeview. The system called "Free to View" (which I use at my home mooring) is identical to Freesat but administered by Channel 4 who have been selling the £20 cards for over 2 years. Confusing isn't it?

Gravatar Hi Sue,

Great blog on the satelite TV. I am constantly amazed by your technical capabilities, although most of it goes over my head. I'm sure that you could make a good living on the canal hooking up internet connections and Satelite TVs.

Nice write up on Granny Buttons about the blog.

Gravatar Hello

Good stuff on the satellite, but ITV is now deencrypted and you can get all the Sky regions.

Later on this year Freesat will be available, no card required but Channel 4 and 5 will still need a card for a little while.

It is likely that evry two years or so a new Sky card will be required.

Keep up the good work

Gravatar I contacted maplin about some of their satelliote dish/receiver equipment for my narrow-boat and was advised it would not work because of boat movement (moored). Can any of you advise if this is a real problem....how often do you lose signal due to boat movement ? Is it so bad that it is not worth doing ? (My freeview digital + analogue system loses the channels so ofetn and line-of-sight to a transmitter is so often obscured in the canals).
Nick

Gravatar Nick,

Don't believe a word of it, go ahead and buy the system you want, and just follow my instructions for setting up.

Your narrowboat can 'move' an awful long way on your mooring and still hold that signal.

We very very rarely get a problem with losing the signal, perhaps we might in an extremely heavy rain storm, but then most householders do too, and I can't ever remember losing a signal because the boat moved up and down it's mooring.

Best thing since sliced bread this system is, in fact just yesterday we purchased a contract to watch more channels!

Gravatar Hi,

Liked your info on getting Sky TV - well done. Question though for the stupid (me!)- what is a flag staff holder?, and how do you fix it to the boat? I presume also that it has to be fixed vertical rather than at an angle?

Regards

PS We are due to retire soon and giving serious thought to buying a canal boat - so your site has been really interesting so again, well done.

Gravatar Graham, A flag staff pole is just a pole put into a socket. Here is what the socket looks like, we just have a pole about 14 inches high, because we go places where the bridges are low!
