Sorry to hear your troubles are looking worse than a thermostat.
I seem to remember from a few cars back that a garrage can "sniff" to see if youo have a head gasgit gone. It looked a bit like a battery hydrometer. It only took seconds, and was spot on. The other way I remember is to see if you get a flow of small bubbles at the radiator cap at full running temperature. You don't have a radiator, but you must have a rad cap somewhere.

Yes we did the bubble test and it was as you described, and as you can see by the latest blog there was some evidence both on the block and on the gasket of water getting through, so that is the problem for sure.. have to wait and see now the extent of the problem

Great news, I bet you just cant wait!!
We insure with Nautical Insurance Services Ltd (01702 470811 for a quote). We have found them very good indeed and have been insured with them for the last three years. Do take out their Marine Emergency cover for an extra £25 a year. This will cover you for breakdowns and they will send someone out to you if you cant find an engineer. They pay the first £150 of labour charges, you pay for parts. There is no limit to the number of call outs a year. Hope that all helps. Corrrrrr.. I guess they owe me a bit of commission for all that!!
