Newmarket : left it too late to comment on your down memory lane posting on Newmarket, excuse me posting here.
Fascinating that you both worked in the racing industry and for such famous trainers.
As a youth I lived in Worthing, Sussex and used to delight in seeing Captain Ryan Price's string along the main road enroute Findon to the High Salvington Bostal gallops - woe betide the impatient motorist and God help those who sounded their horn! He had, shall we say, a direct and choice vocabulary given such provocation! In contrast a wide smile and a raised hat would be the reward for driving in sympathy with his horses, their gallops a delight to see. A shame that Giacometti did not take the Derby for him in 1974.
When later living in North London as a young man would come off night shift to be rewarded by the sight of the Royal Horse Artillery enroute up Haverstock Hill to gallops on Hampstead Heath. How I wish I had taken photographs. Fantastic to see!
Have always wanted to visit Newmarket to see the horses exercise - if I do this where should I aim for and what time should I be in place by? Your informed advice would be much appreciated.
You must look back fondly on those days, probably unremunerative but rewarding in other ways - do you still ride horses given the opprtunity?
Never rode horses myself - too heavy - but love to see them at work and racing at its best,
regards,
Neil from Doncaster

Mark and Lorain,
It was great to meet you both.. the mugs are fantastic, thankyou again for those, what a treat you gave us.. I will be watching your blog with interest, and hey I have found the time to put it in the links on the side of the page now
Neil,
Sounds like you have some fond memories yourself.. I have met Capt Ryan Price, a smashing guy he is too. The best place to watch at Newmarket is Warren Hill, which is very close to the roundabout at the top end of Newmarket, the Bury end. You would need to be early me thinks, I remember first lot was out on the heath at 6.30am.. second lot about 8am... blimey I don't see that time much these days!!
Many thanks for the comment Neil, really enjoyed reading that..

Hi Sue
I sympathise with you regarding the noisy yobs. I moored at All Oaks Wood near Brinklow as I like to be away from any noise and some morons drove into the car park and decided to let fireworks off at 11.30 at night. My dogs started barking so I let them out and the morons got back in their car and drove off pdq. It was quite disturbing though as there was a very recently burnt out car in the nearby car park which had only been there for a few days which I had not noticed until I had moored up. It appears that wherever you moor up there is unfortunately always the chance of the more undesirable element of society arriving and spoiling things for other people.

Val, For sure it is a problem anywhere, but having a dog certainly helps, they are not overly keen when a dog is growling. Luckily I can get Lucy to growl on command, and with those collie threatening eyes it has worked a couple of times over the years when we were intimidated. Hope you have had a good summer Val
