Just for the record both boats had a licence the year previous to them sinking. I have no idea what happened to the families concerned. It is very sad as you say!

Graham,
Oh, now I am surprised. I thought everyone was moaning and groaning about those boats being there, and that they had no licence, that is nice to know then, but not a nice sight to see.. shame then.
However I did count 13 boats close to that point while I was out walking this afternoon, and of those 13, 10 were either not showing a licence or had a licence that was dated last year.. that is a shame too!

The owner of the boats is called carl, and posts on the canal world forums. The family had moved ashore some time before the boats sank. The burnt out one was set alight by vandals. It's a great shame, as they were historic boats.

Thanks for the mention.
We are now at Crick after taking a detour to Leicester so that the boys could go to the Leicester Match on the boat. It was good to meet you.
Regards, Maggie
