Hi everyone,
I was thinking about it last night and I can't believe that it has almost been two years since you were in Great Haywood getting NP1 fitted with canvas before your winter cruise on the Ashby. Time does fly.
Also, was thinking about the roses you had painted on NP last week. When I was at the Canal Boat Museum in Stoke Bruerne in 1990 I think I spoke with someone who told me that there was a different style of rose painted on the boats and water cans depending on which canal the boat was from. If this is true, what canal do the flowers on your boat represent? Grand Union I think?
The flooding in western England has finally made the evening news here in the US.
Stay dry and best wishes.

Mark,
I am sure this would have been true many years ago when the working boats were the only ones on the canals. All of the boats had different symbols on them for varing reasons.
For instance, you could tell by the number of rings on the chimney whether a working boat was owned by the company, or owned by another person and leased to the company or whether the skipper was the owner of the boat.
All the boats, you see, would have the carrying company's name on the side, that would have been the only way of stating the actual ownership of the boat.
But each of the canal artists these days have their own way of painting the roses. Carol who painted our roses is self taught, and I just liked the way she did hers. I suppose because she comes from Blackpool in Lancashire then we probably have some 'norvan' connection now?.. Blimey they won't like me saying that 'dan saff'!
The floods seemed to have peaked now, but we still have friends dotted around who have been stuck on various parts of the system for many days not able to move.. I guess there will be a hosepipe ban next week!!!!
