Di you realise you were taking a big chance with the gas lockers. Gas is heavier than air which is why the drain holes are at the bottom to let any leaked gas out.
Leaving the top open won't help much as the gas sits at the bottom like water.
If you had created any sort of spark when removing the bungs you might not be here to blog about it !

Hands well and truly smacked Paul!
Yes we were aware of the problems with the gas. We made the scupper blockers over the weekend making sure they would fit properly, only securely fitting them at the very last minute before she was hauled up. We did switch the gas off.
Vic was aware that any leaking gas would sink, and it was him that left the locker cover off so that he could go and check by sticking his nose in that all was OK.
It was a risk for sure, and we would not advise anyone to do as we did.
