Yes, but your folks were under threat of death. The Mexicans are merely under the threat of poverty. Not as good an excuse.

No, my family emigrated after the US invasion. What they did was illegal and they were afraid of being poor in Europe.
Women don't strap babies on their backs and walk through the desert for cash. You've been fed a line of bullshit. Really, it's not just about money, it's about wanting to live a long healthy life.

And Marvin, it's not just you. I don't hate you for your views but I'd ask you to reexamine them and I'd ask you why you're afraid.

I'll just register my agreement with the spirit of this post, without diving into hypotheticals or anything.
We all need some long-term perspective and big-picture thinking around these parts.

I work with the elderly and all the German immigrants I've ever met can speak perfect English. The Mexicans don't bother. When people move here and don't learn to speak English it makes it nearly impossible to care for them when they become infirm.
ps I love your blog, I can't remember where I found it, though.

I've seen it from a few perspectives. I grew up in El Paso, a knee deep river away from third world poverty. The parents of my best friend came from Mexico. To this day his Mom speaks broken English, but she tries. They applied for visas and got them. They came to America and built a life. The family's construction company is one of the largest in El Paso, and also in the Woodlands near Houston. They did it the way it should be done.
I also watched my father work tirelessly to provide for his family. I watched him look at the property tax bill each year with increasing anger. When I was a 7th grader the property taxes reached the point that they were now more than the principal each month. All so we could support every illegal who could make it across the border to Thomason hospital and give birth. Birth of the child meant instant citizenship, and a virtual guarantee against deportation for the mother. I'd stand in line behind them at the grocery store and watch them buy beer, sodas, candy, chips and cigarettes with their food stamps from unscrupulous store owners while their kids walked around the store with no shoes. Milk, cheese and bread were afterthoughts. They did it the way it shouldn't be done.
No One is saying that all people don't deserve a chance here, all they are saying is have the balls to provide for yourself, rather than expect someone else to pay your way.
Stepping from the soapbox.

Personally, I wouldn't bitch if I really thought that my taxes were going to feed the poor and give them medical care. I bitch about taxes because I know that the vast majority of it goes to the Department of Defense, failed mortgage lenders and Halliburton.

I'm not afraid of illegals, I'm just tired of my tax dollars being spent to assist people who violate our laws and who consume our resources such as health care, without paying much in the way of income taxes. Other countries, such as Holland or France, for all their liberalism, are relatively vicious in their immigration enforcement compared to the US. Yet the US gets the flak. It's amusing.
I love legal immigrants. They make this country strong. I'm not so fond of illegals. They disrespect the country by their presence, and I don't think they particularly assist the economy much, especially by driving wages downward for legal workers.

And I should say, I'm glad your 'rents came here, because you are here now, and you are blogging, and you're interesting. What's done may well be done, as far as illegals who are here. But there's no reason to keep allowing it in the future. Amnesty? I'm not keen on it. But someone has to shut the barn door sometime and say "no more." It's silly to leave it open.

Marvin, we saw what amnesty got us when Reagan did it, 12 million more illegals.
I agree with the first post. Sue, your family came here under the threat of death. My Jewish family came here legally after the Pogrom from Prussia. You can't compare apples to oranges. We deny many people who legitimately should be here because their lives are threatened by real threat, not poverty.
Not to mention, we don't have an economy that can support these people here illegally.

You have wonder why I don't hear anyone howling about the number of illegal Irish, English, and Canadians are in America.
Oh, wait... I remember now.
