The media may fail to report these barbaric acts' connections to Islam. But more and more Americans are figuring it out anyway.
I also note that more and more people are losing faith in the media. Enough of these disenchanted to turn things around? I don't know. But the anger and frustration are there--right and middle. The left remains forever blind, I suppose.

I'm not disputing the fact that many Muslims link FGM with their religion, but it isn't universal. Nor is it restricted to Muslims.
The WHO shows where the practice is carried out, here. As can be seen on P5 it is principally sited in the central belt of Africa. From working in Africa, I know that it is practised by Animists and Christians as well as Muslims.
Therefore attempts to end FGM by focusing wholly on the Koran are going to fail. Moreover, given the lack of absolute correlation, using FGM as evidence of the need for Islamic reform will prove counter productive unless it focuses only on Muslims who do carry out the practice.

FGM is indeed not restricted to Muslims. However, see this post, which has a link to a news article from the UK.

FGM originated with desert pagan Arabs. Mostly with Bedouin and other nomadic tribes in sub-Saharan Africa. Mohammed never advocated the practice for muslims; it was co-opted later by fundamentalist islamists as a method to control women, since they hate and fear them. This practice is UNACCEPTABLE and cowardly. PERIOD. It needs to end. NOW.
