Gravatar I broadly agree with you. This debate over social and economic liberalism is stupid.

However, I would like to defend the 'Orange Book Crowd' as you term them. I don't feel they've sought to create a grouping so much as they have been cast in that role by others.
I see The Orange Book as an attempt to start some debate in areas they felt needed it, it was then lept upon by some of the more conservative members of the party who characterized them as some sort of faction. This has almost become a self-fulfilling prophecy. I sometimes wonder whether people have read the book, the first chapter refers to social liberalism as 'the final, essential, element of liberalism'.

We really do need to start making our core philosophy clear, we are the only party which is united by a philosophy (other than that of trying to gain power at all costs possibly) and I don't believe being less woolly will lead to any major split, so long as it is not done autocratically by a few people.
