I love Greek myths, I was told them as a wee child by a neighbor who was an Scot living in Northern California, attnding graduate school. Knowing the myths has served my quite well in my life, I must say. I think it is wonderful that you are sharing them with your daughter, and I think your book is dope. I'm giving one to every kidlet I know. Keep up the good work.

Seeing as Athena was the goddess of civilization and the disciplined areas of battle, it's only fitting that you went the way of the olive tree and just let it go.
Then again, had you gone all Medusa and tripled into the Gorgons, you could have been like a bull in a Greek China shop, which could have been a lot of fun.
Can't wait for the book.

It's a fantastic idea. You've inspired me to make my own alphabet book for my kids. Thanks for the idea.

I bought two of each and that was just for myself and other adults (who either appreciate great art or lived the Greek Myths when we were children) because they are so beautiful and unusual - I am already planning on buying more of each still for adult gifts. i haven't even started on the kids yet. And lulu seems to have saved all my info so ordering is about two clicks. uh oh.

i think one of my most favorite things about your stories is being able to see a glimpse of what we will experience in about 6 months with our own little girl- it amazes me that juniper is able to have that level of cognitive reasoning at her age and i'm sure it will amaze me when our girl is making connections on things we've taught her as well.
thanks for all of your hard work in doing the book- what a gift for your readers and our kids.

I just ordered a copy for my husband for his birthday. (I'm sure he'll share it with our children!)
He's a highschool mythology teacher who has always loved telling the myths to kids of ALL ages. I know he'll love the book.
Thanks so much for putting it together. It is wonderful!

SO STOKED about this. Bought a copy, linked to it in my blog's sidebar. Yippee! This is such an awesome project, Dutch. It will be a grave injustice of cosmic proportions if the glass-walled perimeter of your charming little abode is not soon encircled by dozens of mewling, pleading, toga-rending children's book publishers.

if you want help next time making these into a "real" book (applying the text that you said you had trouble with, etc)., I'd be more than happy to volunteer my time. I love detroit, graffiti, and the idea of using it in a children's book.

Just ordered my copy. I still say you would be perfectly justified in earning some proceeds from the sales, but I respect the stand you've taken on the issue.

I was shocked the first time I realised I understood someone else's mythology better than they did. You did the right thing by walking away.
Excellent book.

In case anyone else would be interested: what I've done in purchasing the books was to make matching donations to a Detroit non-profit in the Juniper family nomme de blog.

It may not be a perfect fit, but it makes me feel better to pay it forward.

Just bought one for Hootie. She's going to LOVE it. She always wants to try and figure out what graffiti says or what the pictures are. Now I just have to balance the sentiment she learned from preschool that graffiti is wrong and criminal and "bad" but at the same time, it's art and beautiful. Being an artist myself, and LOVING the beautiful graffiti all over the world that I have seen in run-down ruinous areas, I have a hard time trying to explain how it's both beautiful and criminal at the same time. Sigh. Life is complex.

I think that what you meant to say was, never argue with a Greek. Especially not a Greek that has any sort of pecuniary relationship with the gods

I just stumbled onto this delicious blog and cannot wait to begin exploring it! I teach The Odyssey to a sea of anxious freshmen, and they love all that god and goddess exploration and are forever asking me questions I cannot answer, prompting me to learn more and more.

Did I remember to tell you how much we love our alphabet book? It's on our coffee table, as we speak, right on top of Annie Liebowitz's Women book and Nate's Zelda: Twilight Princess cheat book for the Wii.
You're in great company.

Integrity shmegrity - you really ought to make a buck or two off these. We love the first. Can't wait for volume two.
If I stick a few dollars in an envelope and write "Sweet Juniper, Detroit MI" on it, do you think it will get to you? Hmmm.
