Gravatar My comment, sir. Love your blog.

Gravatar I'm having a rough month - this would be great and I can already see exactly where I would hang it. Here's hoping things get better for everyone.

Gravatar Call me simple or call me naive but I live by that motto- Everything is going to be alright. The alternative is just too depressing and I think a negative mindset is bad for the soul.

Gravatar Oooooh - Me! Me! Me!

Gravatar I am always referring people here now because I love the way you tell the story of Detroit through photos. Keep up the good work!

Gravatar Consider me entered for this contest...I too prefer the "everything" sentiment!

Gravatar This is a beautiful photograph. I'd love to give this to my sister-in-law, whose mother is battling cancer right now. Will it be available in your shop after the contest ends?

Gravatar I'd like to be considered for one of your beautiful photos.

Gravatar we'd love to add one of your prints to our collection of philadelphia area ones.

Gravatar i'm with lori - i much prefer to approach life with this motto. i think sometimes it's by willful ignorance, but sometimes i NEED to believe that everything IS going to be alright. i'd love to hang this in my home as a reminder.

*keeping my fingers crossed that i win*

i have an ongoing internal battle over what i want my website to be (personal vs. crafty vs. both) so i don't end up posting much, but i went ahead and left my URL too.

Gravatar Pick me! Pick me!

Gravatar we're huge fans and would love to win.

Gravatar I have been reading for awhile, love your site. My little girl is slightly younger than Junie and I love to see the similarities. We are in the midst of a massive home remodel and would love this picture to remind me of the outcome.

Gravatar Comment.
Also, a lame joke b/c a 'comment' comment seems wierd to me. So, here's the joke: What did the 0 say to the 8?
answer: nice belt!
A second joke, also lame:
Why does Snoop Dog carry an umbrella?
Ferdrizzle.
Ha.

Gravatar I love that photo.

Gravatar Really enjoy your outlook on things, especially concerning the children; you're a great dad!

Gravatar Wonderful print.

Gravatar I would love to win a print, and completely agree that Everything is better than Nothing.

I left my URL, but the site is sadly uninteresting as I haven't updated regularly in ages, if ever.

Gravatar It's all about having faith. Seeing it lost is disheartening.

Gravatar I love your photography. Hey, and I'll be up near Detroit Rock City for Christmas.

Gravatar A second chance at this! I hated that I missed it the first go 'round in your shop. What a great contest and photograph.

Gravatar i'm a fan. (my site is where i generally direct leftover angst from high school)

Gravatar You're one of the best on the 'Net! Merry Christmas!

Gravatar That's such a beautiful picture. I'm so glad you got a "before" shot. We've had a lot of stress here lately, and the photo made me smile. Thanks for that.
I, too, would tell a joke, but the only one that comes to mind right now is the old pirate/steering wheel classic. I'll try to come up with something better later.
Thanks so much for the opportunity!

Gravatar If you haven't read "Life of Pi," it's a worthwhile time. It touches on the issues you all are raising. "Everything" vs. "nothing" and willful naivite and all that.

Gravatar I love your writing and photos!

Gravatar Your images continue to inspire me. I sure hope that everything will be alright. I'm counting on it!

Gravatar I came to Detroit a little while ago to see the Tom Waits at the opera house. Detroit was amazing - trees growing on top of buildings downtown, burned out houses next to beautiful houses... Incredible. - Rachel

Gravatar Isn't everything always better than nothing? Happy holidays.

Gravatar That is a great motto, and I love the photo. I didn't know about your etsy shop; going right now to check it out.

How nice of you do do this giveaway. Cheers!

Gravatar I love this photo! Please pick me! I just found out that I'm pregnant with my first child and have been repeating this motto to myself constantly

Gravatar I am a religious follower of your site. Thank you. And let me tell you, if I can without coming off too creepily, that I adore your children.

Gravatar What a great eye you have. Love the photo.

Gravatar renterenterenterenter

Gravatar Love the photo.

Gravatar I love all of your photos ... This would make a wonderful gift for MYSELF!

Gravatar Everything IS going to be alright. When are you going to publish a book of your photography? Thrilling images - thank you for sharing. Jessica

Gravatar Keep on keepin' on, Jim.

Gravatar OK, so I'm writing because I'd love to win the photo. But I'm really writing because reading your blog when I was stuck in the vast whiteness of the midwest helped my husband and I remember why we were living out lives the way we did and why we were raising our children to think and question and occasionally ask so many questions that they piss us off. So thank you for writing so well what I am often thinking.

Gravatar I really love reading your perspectives on everything. I was particularly captivated by the stories of urban decay.

Gravatar Hello sir.

I've been reading for a very long time, and one thing I've always liked is how self aware you seem to be of your own predispositions. Most people seem to be ruefully unaware.

Also, you seem to be raising children who are people one might actually like to be around as adults, so, double-well done for that.

Gravatar I just love your blog. Your parenting philosophy and photography are equally inspiring to me. I write at www.heathenfamilyrevival.blogpsot.com

Gravatar this would be a great motto to remember...

Gravatar Would love to win the photo; thanks for the blog.

Gravatar This photo reminds me of that Bob Marley song, which makes me feel better about life in general... so I like it.

Gravatar love your blog. love your children. love your photographs.

Well done.

Gravatar if i don't win the print i'll certainly be making a painting or some other art prject with that phrase to put up in the house.

Gravatar I love this shot.

Gravatar I changed my wallpaper back to this picture again Dec. 1!

Gravatar Just started following your blog a couple weeks ago. Great stuff all around.

Gravatar Getting a new apartment soon and I would love to have one of these prints to hang up on my wall.

love love love this blog and your photographs.

Gravatar Love it! And such an important message today. Love your blog. I don't remember how I found it but I've been reading for about 2 or 3 years now. And I live nearby...Saginaw.

Gravatar Lovely photo. The fact that you manage to actively pursue photography while tending to two little ones is inspiring to me.

Gravatar I have no blog of my own, but I love reading yours. And this photo is STILL the desktop background on my computer. Love it!

Gravatar gorgeous photo!

Gravatar Brilliant. Would love one! thanks!

Gravatar Me,me,me,me,me enter me.

sorry

please.

Gravatar This is photo perfection.

Gravatar I have a spot for it

Gravatar Love this photo - love all your photos!

Gravatar As a fellow Michigan resident, and a near-Detroiter as well, this would be amazing. What an exciting contest!

Gravatar Have always loved your photos and would be thrilled to hang one up at home!
Best to you and your family this Holiday Season.

Gravatar Long time reader. No time to write. Only time to read. Hoping for a picture in Green Bay. Enjoy your holiday season.

Amanda in GB

Gravatar Please, sir, can I have some more?

Gravatar That photo made me very happy last year during an especially snowy winter in Toronto.

Gravatar I would love a little souvenir of the genius that is Sweet Juniper.

Gravatar Everything WILL be alright.

Gravatar Very striking photo. My brother and family live in Detroit, I often hear how bad things are getting. Happy holidays to you and yours.

Gravatar Love the picture, says a type design student.

Gravatar This has been my motto since a night of eating mushrooms in college convinced me it was the perfect cure to my anxiety.

Gravatar Great website. Mr. T will never be the same for me!

Gravatar I have been a long time admirer of both your writing and photography. This photo is so peaceful, how do you capture sentiments in your work?

Please keep writing, my husband and I love your insights on fatherhood.

Gravatar Lovely!

Gravatar I found you through Dooce...she posted your "Rite of Passage" post about the public restrooms. It is my favorite and it is the post that inspired me to start blogging!

I love your pics and secretly wish I lived in the big city with my kids just for the scenery...even if that scenery is graffiti, trash, broken buildings and dashed hopes and dreams!

Gravatar You're so great dutch.

(I'm sorry but you'll always be dutch. But that's a good thing. All the dutches I know are cool.)

Gravatar The first sentiment is so helpful, the second not so much. Thanks for your writing!

Gravatar To hoping we can regain our faith in that statement

Gravatar 'sawright? 'sawright!

Gravatar Everything *is* going to be alright.

Gravatar I don't have a website, but yours makes me homesick for Detroit.

Gravatar Beautiful photo, and it would look great in my new apartment...my very first time living by myself!

Gravatar Sweet.

Gravatar beautiful photo... people just need to hear that sometimes, regardless of any kind of validity behind it.

Gravatar Having this lovely picture on my wall would be great!

Gravatar We could all use a little hope, and my bare walls could use that beautiful photo.

Gravatar Love your blog it makes me miss Michigan and Ohio and all the places inbetween those two states that I grew up.

Gravatar Longtime reader, occasional commenter. Full time dweeb. Consider me entered!

Gravatar I bought a print of the Book Depository, Ground Floor (8x10) a few months ago and had a really heard time deciding between that one and this "Everything..." photo. I'd love to win one! I love the blog too!

Gravatar Me! Me! =)
Kathy

Gravatar I'm currently traveling around the US on bicycle. Reading your blog has influenced my perspective on many of the run down/forgotten areas of the country I pass through. Write a book..please!

Gravatar i didn't even know you HAD an etsy shop- i'm headed there now!

Gravatar Just what I wanted.... I love that photo.

Gravatar Hi Jim. Thanks for thinking of us.

Gravatar I love this picture. Gorgeous and consider me entered!

Gravatar Amen to that, or that's what I keep telling myself.

Gravatar As I drive around the inner city bliss that is Cleveland, I actually repeat that mantra.

Gravatar This is a very generous offer. I think everything will be alright in the end. Thanks for putting this out there.

Gravatar Im trying to re-mail positive myself - esp living in the detroit area as well. Everyone keep their thoughts with us!

Gravatar Happy Holidays to you and your family.

Gravatar i love y'alls blog! thanks so much!

Gravatar I am a lurker but can always be persuaded to come out for free stuff.

Gravatar I would love this photo. It's my silent prayer especially lately with all the lack of help coming out of DC. As I lifelong Detroiter, the news is hitting home hard and I could use the photo to keep hope strong in our house. I don't have a blog yet, but I am strongly considering one.

Love your blog!! Keep it up Jim!!

Gravatar Beautiful. Please throw me into the mix.

Gravatar love it.

Gravatar Also a lurker most of the time... but I enjoy your words and images, thanks.

Gravatar Am I #100?
whoopee

Gravatar Thanks.

Happy holidays to all of you!

Gravatar Your blog has kept me going through law school, I visit daily. I would love to own the gorgeous print!

Gravatar I love that shot.

Been lurking lately but love to read your stuff. That Marx satire killed.

Gravatar Hello! Your website has inspired my friends and I to start planning a Ruins-of-Detroit roadtrip! Thanks for sharing your ruminations.

Gravatar i have - just today - caught up on all your archived entries. wonderful blog, thanks so much for sharing everything.

you also have a great eye for photography. i've always loved your photo of the lafayette towers. my wife and i lived on the 16th floor of the west tower for over 4 years.

Gravatar Absolutely adore your site, so glad I chanced on it. Thanks for doing what you do!!

Gravatar I, too, prefer the "Everything" instead of the nothing. Love your photos, it's a great contest.

Gravatar Whoo, Detroit! Heading back there next week, and I can't wait.

Gravatar I love your voice. Thanks for writing.

Gravatar Here's my comment! With my husband laid off on November 30th and me looking for a full-time job with benefits so I can provide health care coverage to my kids...AND with my husband going back to school in January...I could really use the photographic reminder.

Gravatar I don't write a blog (or anything else, outside of legal briefs) but love yours. And this photo.

Gravatar i love that photo!

Gravatar Love the blog...looking forward to what you have to say in 2009!

Gravatar This is the companion to "You will be OK." Yes and yes. Thanks for spreading the cheer. Love, love, love the blog.

Gravatar I love the paint cans.

Gravatar Neat.

Gravatar Would enjoy hanging this photo as a pick-me up in this tough time. It's a shame that the original sentiment is no longer visible.

Gravatar Your site has quite a following among the graduate students in Arizona State University's "Social Insect Research Group." If you ever have need for ant- or bee-related ... anything ... we can hook you up.

(That's intended as a resource... not as a bribe.)

Gravatar Would love to win! I really admire your photos. Thanks!

Gravatar Thanks for the generous giveaway. I'd love a chance to win one of your works. Have a great weekend!

Gravatar A friend gave me your ABC book and my daughter cherishes it. I would love to win your contest.

Everything is Going to Be Alright makes me feel good. Neighborhood Girls is my favorite.

Gravatar This print is terrific!

Gravatar My comment: Love the blog! Seriously. I'm also a Detroiter, so the hopeless thing feels very close to home.

My favorite photo on any of your photo streams (other than the awesome Eastern Market haul ones) is the picture of the chair and the screenless television set at some homeless encampment in the Dequindre cut area. That picture is riveting.

Gravatar Hi Jim, I'm a big fan of both your writing and your photography. After showing your photos of Detroit to my brother who recently just left the city for the east coast, he sighed wistfully and said, 'I never thought I'd say this, but this makes me miss that place.' Keep up the great work!

Gravatar Every morning when I get to work, the first thing I do is pull up this blog. The writing is amazing, and the photos are wonderful. And the kids... are the bomb!!

Gravatar Hi - love your blog and love this shot too!
Sarah

Gravatar Always been a fa of your stories and photography. Great opportunity, thanks!

Gravatar I'd love to buy one of the "Everything is going to be alright" prints even if I don't win one! Will that still be possible?

Gravatar Everything IS going to be alright. I need to believe that at least.

Gravatar Your photography reminds me of Andreas Gursky, my favorite. I would love to have a photo of yours in my home!

Gravatar I'm a fellow Michigander and would love to win the print. I enjoy seeing Detroit through your eyes even when the images are painful. Keeping an ear to the news today desperately hoping W will come through with $$ for the bailout.

Gravatar I don't win stuff, but I'd really like to win one of your awesome pictures. Thanks for all the great posts and pictures.
p.s. I hope these are the Haloscan comments... I wasn't sure.

Gravatar Here's my entry into this lovely contest! Thanks! Enjoy your blog lots.

Gravatar Love the way you're raising your kids. You give me tons of ideas.

Gravatar I miss Michigan so much it hurts. My husband and I are always telling people we want to move back, and, in the light of current economics, everyone asks "Why?". Because it's our home, that's why.

Gravatar This is one of my favorite photos of yours.

Gravatar I could use a bright spot in this Michigan climate...enter us please and thanks...

Gravatar What a great idea for a give-away! Pick me!

Gravatar I love the "Everything is going to be alright" print. I'd hang it right next to our front door.

Gravatar this is my very favorite of all your lovely photos. I have it hanging in my office and look at it constantly. Changing everything to nothing makes me want to weep - altho I do think we'll need a companion photo.

Gravatar Here is my comment, and now I will commence the crossing of fingers.

Gravatar I would love a print. Your photos are spectacular.

Gravatar I have your photos in my foyer. I'd love to add another.

Gravatar Woohooo!!!

Gravatar Love holiday contests - almost as much as I love reading the awesomely awkward 70s children's books.

Gravatar I kind of like the new sentiment. It seems appropriate in an ironic kind of way.

Gravatar ooh! pick me! I don't think I can even begin to tell you how handy that particular slogan, framed on my wall, would have been over the last few weeks. Okay, decades. Not to mention it's gorgeous.

Gravatar Comment! Love seeing Detriot through your lens.

Gravatar please pick ME!

Gravatar No website or blog but I do enjoy reading yours and a few others.

Gravatar I, too, desire one of these bitchin' prints. Thank you for having the contest.

Gravatar Love your pictures!

Gravatar If I don't win it, I'm going to ask for a copy of that print for Christmas. It's wonderful.

Gravatar I don't really have a blog anymore, but I love your site, and I love that picture. Write more about Greek and Roman antiquity, plz. =)

Gravatar Don't we all need that message. I'm commenting mainly to de-lurk because you're excluding us Europeans Would be very happy to pay for postage on any of your prints should you change your mind at all. We need optimism on the other side of the Atlantic too (as well as photos of broken-down urbanity!). All the best from Copenhagen

Gravatar Long time reader, big fan.

Gravatar Love photos, love the blog. Blog on, JDG, blog on.

Gravatar Lovely photo! It would make a perfect visual reminder for me, personally, as I tend to be a bit of a worrywart.

By the way, I've been reading and enjoying your blog and photos for about a year now, but I think this is the first time I have commented. Sorry about that, and thanks for the great read!

Gravatar Yes Please, Thank you

Gravatar I already have the "Everything" photo, but I'd love to have more of your work!

Thanks for the amazing blog and photos - your site is always a must-read for me - and I very much appreciate your perspective.

Gravatar I'm Dana and I'd love to win a copy of that picture.

Gravatar So cool. I hope they change it back soon!

Gravatar I am an industrial historian and love your photos!

Gravatar Awesome contest. LOVE your photos!

Gravatar As a Detroiter who recently moved, I appreciate seeing home through your lens and also hearing stories of what will always be home for me.

Merry Christmas!

Gravatar I found your site when you were a sub for Dooce. Have visited it faithfully ever since! My daughter is now 21. I stayed home to raise her and often wondered whether I'd made the right decision. Our family had to change our lifestyle once we went down to one primary paycheck. Wish I'd had your blog around back then to encourage me! Thank you for your insights, your perspective and the way you interpret your experiences through words and photographs. You make my world feel richer.
You are a generous soul to give your work away. As my Sydney cousin would say, "Good on ya, mate!"
Happy holidays.
Stayed-at-home Mom, now at large

Gravatar I'd love a photo for my 2 1/2-year-old's bedroom. Detroit is our favorite city we've never been to.

Gravatar I love that photo. I don't know how good my chances are since there are already 163 comments and counting, but in the spirit of the picture, I will quash my inner pessimist and think positively. Happy holidays to you and your family!

Gravatar Generosity is a tremendous reward, karmically powerful, and ever-appreciated.

Best wishes for the season to you and yours.

Gravatar I really enjoy your work.

Gravatar Love that print!

Gravatar Beautiful.

Gravatar I've been reading the blog for a little while now for the art, journalism and fresh take on parenting. Well done and happy holidays to you.

Gravatar The perfect photo and sentiment for the current climate. Thanks so much for sharing your words and images.

Happy holidays to you and your family!

Gravatar i would honestly love any of your prints.

they're all amazing.

Gravatar That is a gorgeous photo. I do love your writing.

Gravatar Love this! Have a great holiday!

Gravatar Amazing photo -- who wouldn't want to get one?

Gravatar Love your writing and your photography!

Gravatar No idea why I haven't commented in a while - must change that. Happy Holidays to you, Wood, Juniper and Gram.

Gravatar Sweet Juniper's blog
Two kids, two 'rents, with pics.
Merry Christmas, guys.

Gravatar I'm semi new to your site and didn't know you had an etsy shop (yes I'm that new). Now you are added to 'my favorites' I like your prints. We have a ton of empty walls right now I'm trying to fill with only pictures of my family and friends or original artwork (mostly from etsy).

Gravatar This is one of my favorite photos. I always think that good things happen when it snows!

Gravatar Ohhh! I'd love another one of your prints! I have the MOCAD photo you feature but I know someone else who would love it as a gift (or maybe I'll be selfish and pick another one for moi!)

Gravatar As I am currently unemployed, a free print of that photo might be a good pick-me-up. But even if I don't win the print, thanks for having the contest. That is a very thoughtful gesture of you, and I'm sure all the SW readers appreciate it.

Hope yourself, Wood and the kiddos all have a wonderful holiday season!

Gravatar I love your pictures.

Gravatar I adore your website. I always enjoy reading about your experiences with your lovely children, drooling over your beautiful photos on etsy, or just admiring your writing. Thank you for having this holiday giveaway! This may put some cheer into someone's heart who needs it desperately. Happy holidays!

Gravatar Beautiful pic. I have plenty of empty wall space to do it justice.

Gravatar Everything *is* going to be alright. Or...sort of anyway. This article: http://www.good.is/?p=13888, made me feel pretty excellent last night. And I know there is ... naivete, or...gullibility here, but... I don't care, really. There is beauty in that and I am so happy to be able to feel it.

Gravatar (I know it's easier to just put the site where I am writing now down as the URL but when I rarely comment I use my zine. So. I'm actually posting here.)

I'm excited about this.

Gravatar Holy Comments, Dutchman! You'd think this post was about poo.

As a long-time reader, I'd love to have one of your prints. Happy holidays, my friend. Thanks for the generosity.

Gravatar Thanks so much for offering such a great giveaway! Your photos are inspiring and I would proudly display one in our home.

Gravatar Love your blog...thanks for a wonderful contest!

Gravatar I do love reading your site. Hope you and your family have a good holiday season.

Gravatar What lovely photos.

Gravatar I'd love to win! We're in the market for some new art for the house.

Gravatar I have been reading your blog for quite some time (I think I started some time back when you still lived in San Fransisco) and I absolutely love that print. It is probably my favorite of all your pictures.

Gravatar I really hope that the president elect & co

a.) Bring back the WPA, and

b.) Encourage urban homesteading in cities like Detroit. (For example, make it possible for low-income artists to move to the city, reclaim abandoned places, and try to build some sort of sustainable community).

In other news, I have become a hippie.

Gravatar I'd love one of your prints for my dormroom. Bet you didn't know college kidz your read your blogz.

Gravatar As a lover of the decayed beauty of urban blight, I'd be delighted to have one of your prints.

Gravatar Oh my. I hate to resort to groveling, but I will. I'm a native Detroiter now living in Atlantic Beach, Florida (hence my nascent blog). I've read you consistently since I found you several months ago. Your writing is wonderful and often hilarious and the photos are haunting and evocative of home for me. I roamed the city's neighborhoods in the early '90s when I worked with youth living there, and also did a stint for several years at the Detroit Chamber. So all these images bring back 'home' to me. I love the Eastern Market posts and pictures too. There's much to miss about Detroit despite its obvious flaws, and those of us raised there can be a little defensive about it at times! Even though I love my Atlantic Beach life, Detroit is home, and your blog is bookmarked. My family still live there and this year was the first year I did not go back for summer vacation, actually. Oh, won't you please, please pick me?! I would cherish any of your photographs. Thank you for your consideration.

Gravatar I have never wanted to put a year behind me like this one, and that sentiment fits my headspace this winter

I love your blog, and have been reading since stumbling across it back when we both lived in San Francisco, and had babies a couple of weeks apart in age

Gravatar Have always loved everything I ever saw on this blog.

Gravatar We're being forced to move on two weeks notice after our landlord allowed his home to be foreclosed on so he has to move into ours. I'd love to be able to hang one of your photos in our new place.

Gravatar I love your photos. Looks like you have tons of traffic for this give away.

Gravatar I love the photography and background information that you publish.

Gravatar Love the spirit of your blog and this contest!

Gravatar Would love to have one of your photos

Gravatar Pick me!

Gravatar Long time listener, first time caller, Vancouver, BC.

Gravatar Awesome! I hope I win!

Gravatar I'd love one! I noticed the Everything/Nothing switch, too, and thought I'd read it wrong through not-rose-colored glasses.

Gravatar how fun!

Gravatar Long time reader--love the blog and your gorgeous photographs!

Gravatar Signging up! I love your photos and blog.

Gravatar Everything IS going to be alright!

Gravatar Hand raised very high in the air. Love your blog.

Gravatar I still really love reading your stories.

Gravatar love your work.

Gravatar I live in Montana, but grew up in Grand Rapids. I love all of your references to Russ' (my parents called it "Pension Palace") I used to eat there every week with my grandma, and other things local to MI.

Gravatar I love this photo.

Gravatar Greetings from Tucson, Arizona, where we don't get to see snow very often...

Gravatar I enjoy reading your blog everyday. PLEASE write more about the detroit auto situation. I need to hear something positive for a change.

Gravatar I noticed the change on the MOCAD sign, too, on my evening busrides home. Given the state of things here, the new sign drove a nail through my heart.

Gravatar love Detroit, love your blog. thanks for the giveaway.

Gravatar Love your photos and the stories you write to go along with them.

Gravatar For one of your gorgeous photos I will emerge from the edges of lurkdom.

Gravatar I love your blog and have shared it with my Detroit-loving friends (and former residents). Your writing is fantastic and very inspiring!

Gravatar I'm no longer blogging myself, but that doesn't stop me from returning to my favourites daily. Sweet Juniper being among the best of them. Best of the season to you and yours!

V.

Gravatar For about 40 hours a week, I sit in an office very much like the one in "Joe Versus the Volcano" and write about cheese. A lovely picture hanging on the wall would be a welcome distraction.

Gravatar I really enjoy your work. I always look forward to reading your blog.

Gravatar I was stunned when they changed it to "nothing"! Totally bummed out an already bummed out metro detroiter!

Love your sit btw.

Gravatar This would nicely compliment the other photo of yours that I own.

Happy holiday's!

Gravatar Great print.

Gravatar love this site/sight

Gravatar I love your site, your writing, your photography. I check for updates every day. My son is a couple months older than Gram so I love reading your take on each phase that he goes through.

Gravatar I've been enjoying your blog for a few months. Love it.

Gravatar I love your photography!

Gravatar you are my escape. i love this blog, mostly i love your photography. i even got my husband hooked. the man that does not want kids is now starting to feel like he can do this and still be CHEAP. thanks.

Gravatar Thanks for doing this. As a recent law school graduate who is making a career (unpaid of course) out of informational interviewing, it would be wonderful to be able to get a print of one of your beautiful photos.

I love reading your site. You have such a great writing style.

Keep it up!

Gravatar my heart sank a little when I saw it was changed to "nothing".

Gravatar You never cease to amaze me. Please pick me kind sir.

Gravatar ...maybe we could do a trade?
-thanks for writing

Gravatar A couple of days ago I set this picture as the background of my laptop to help get me through my first set of exams as a 1L. I would love an actual copy of the picture as a reminder that its possible I can get through law school without shooting myself in the face.

Gravatar As most of the comments say, I love your blog. You're my favorite writer, in terms of the blogging world, and I'd probably say I have a little blog crush on you (sorry Wood!).

Gravatar Got to your blog after you guested at dooce; I've been a regular ever since.

Gravatar I am beyond joyful that Canadians are allowed to enter this contest.

Gravatar Would love a print.

Gravatar You make me miss Detroit. I lived off Warren and worked in the Penobscot Bldg.; my mom was a native East-sider, too. Thanks for keeping me connected.

Gravatar Love your blog and would love a print!

Gravatar Beautiful photo!! Would look lovely in my new house!

Gravatar As a St.Louis resident, but MI native, I appreciate your commentary on the politics of urban decay and the duality of being from up-north-small-town, but somehow being drawn to cities with their bones laid bare.

I'd also like to recommend the blog of a friend who is also chronicling the loss of our architectural heritage:
http://ecoabsence.blogspot.com/

happy holidays!

Gravatar Here's to everything being alright.

Gravatar I've always loved that picture.

Gravatar I can't believe you are giving away free art! No plastic junk, indeed - MORE ART!! Fabulous gesture, Jim.

Gravatar I am a faithful follower of your writing and photos. I think you and your sweet family and pooch are the AWESOMEST ever! So, smart - all of you - a photo would be SWEET.

Gravatar Yay free art!

Gravatar I was just thinking the other day about how much I missed Michigan snowfalls at night - how it makes everything quiet and beautiful. This image takes that feeling to the next level, I love it.
I'm a big fan. You certainly inspire this Michigan kid living in economic exile in Southern CA. My son knows nothing about quiet snowfalls. I'm pretty sure that it's a crime to raise him this way.
Would love to have the photo. Keep up the great work.

Gravatar Would love a print. Geez, I'd love to have all of your prints. Forget law. You've found your calling.

Gravatar alright!

Gravatar Enjoy your blog but never comment. Call me a creeper. Go ahead. But I love your photography.

Gravatar Love the blog and your photos.

Gravatar Great photo. Great blog. Thanks for the giveaway and Merry Christmas!

Gravatar Awesome!

Gravatar Enjoy your blog immensely

Gravatar I don't have a public blog yet because I'm a private a person like that but I have to say, I just adore your site! The photography keeps me coming back every day to see what new you've posted.

Hands down, this is some of the smartest writing I've had the priviledge to read in a long while- and that goes for the Both of you. Honestly, reading about how you approach parenting gives me hope that the future might be in capable hands after all.

Keep Rockin!

Gravatar Thank you for such a generous offer!

Gravatar I would like one please.

Gravatar Sign me up. Love your blog.

Gravatar Wow. Over 270 comments already!
I came very close to buying this print a while back. It is a beautiful picture.

Gravatar pick me pick me!
i love the blog and reading about this urban prairie you inhabit. truely original to me and many more I'm sure. I would love to hear about your take on the auto industry more. Thanks and please pick me!

Gravatar It will make me so happy to see this everyday when I step home. Specially now that I just lost my job.

Gravatar My husband bought one of your prints a while back--I'd love to surprise him with another one! :D

Gravatar Oh, I've always loved that photo of yours.

Gravatar oh, oh i hope i win. thanks!
it is a photo of yours i have admired.

Gravatar and i don't have a blog, but if you want to get to know your readers, you can look at my flickr acct, or add me as a flickr friend, or whatever--
http://www.flickr.com/photos/hemmins/

Gravatar You inspire me to take more photos. And to get a better camera with which to do so.

Gravatar My comment! I enjoy your blog and photos so very much.

Hope your family has a very merry Christmas.

Gravatar Your photos inspire me to look at my city in a different way.

Gravatar Thank you for writing and for taking pictures. You are great at both.

Gravatar Wow, thanks for being so generous, and for letting Canadians enter (I'm from Victoria). I absolutely love your photographs!

Gravatar Love the print and it sort of embodies my feelings about the economy currentl (although in the new incarnation, not the one that you have here).

Gravatar It would be a sad, sad world if nothing was going to be all right. I much prefer to dream of the glass being full for everyone and wish the glass would never empty for anyone.

Love the photos!

Will

Gravatar clearly you got the recession memo today....

Gravatar Your photos are absolutely stunning. I love your blog!

Gravatar I wish I could take photos as well as you!! You are wonderful! Happy Holidays.

Gravatar I love your photos. So awesome...just know, I'm not as cool as you are. Can't write worth crap, so if you end up at my blog...you've been warned.

Gravatar A beautiful sentiment from a beautiful blog. These photos make me more in love with cities.

Gravatar Came (and stayed) for the blog, adore the photos!

Shannon

Gravatar This photo is just the reminder I need.

Gravatar That particular piece of yours is one of my favorite photographs--I had it as my desktop wallpaper for a while.

I've commented a time or two, but as I don't have a website, I'm an MFA candidate in film, who's from Cleveland and lived in New York City and DC.

Gravatar Thanks for the giveaway! I hope you and your family have a great holiday season.

Gravatar Thanks! Love your photos and your blog!

Gravatar This is a really sweet thing that you're doing. Your photographs are beautiful. I haven't commented in quite awhile but here I am...

Gravatar my favorite saying is "all shall be well and all shall be well and all manner of things shall be well", attributed to the anchoress Julian of Norwich. very similar. i don't blog but i'm an avid reader.

Gravatar Good luck to .... me? Thanks for the contest.

Gravatar It's a wonderful picture!

Gravatar Your photography and writing is really inspiring.

Gravatar Oh, please please may I win?! I'm in law school with a cute new baby and think of the Sacajawea Theory often and fondly.

Gravatar i heart sweet juniper and have for several years now. having recently become a first time parent, your insights and musings are all the more relevant and enjoyable.

Gravatar I enjoy your writing (and your wife's) very much. In fact, her post about the quilt made me cry. It was very touching and made me think how far I've come with my own kids, the oldest of which is 6. Thanks for sharing your creativity!

Gravatar One of my favorite photos, and the mantra that goes through my head during trying times (a la "Three Little Birds" by Bob Marley).

Gravatar I really need to believe everything is going to be alright.
PS: Long time reader, first time writer... Sweet juniper is my internet treat.

Gravatar big fan of you folks.

Gravatar Great photo- agreed that Everything is preferable to Nothing these days, but would love to see an edition that featured the Nothing, too.

Gravatar The photo is beautiful and I have really been enjoying your writing - especially the Nixon era childrens books!

Gravatar Beautiful photos - I know exactly where I would hang one too. Thanks for the great giveaway!

KR

Gravatar I just came home from a gypsy concert and am way to drunk to write anything of worth. I live in Berne, but hey ("heureka") my brother is in New York, so enter me as well, I've got an American adress.

I started reading your site because I really needed proof that parenting doesn't change one into a weirdo. Well, apparently it does, but one can still be a pretty cool weirdo, is what I've learned.

Gravatar I haven't commented in awhile, but I've been lurking.

Hope you, Wood, Juniper and Gram have a joyful holiday!

Gravatar i already have your photo, 'everything is going to be alright' (all right), it's hanging in my bedroom. thank you for it

Gravatar Such amazing work. Would love to be the very proud owner of one of your pieces.

Gravatar Would love one of your beautiful photos!

Gravatar love your photos and blog. happy holidays and thanks for the continued entertainment and enlightenment.

Gravatar We love your blog and photos. Happy holidays to you and your family.

Gravatar absolutely love it.

Gravatar I would like to believe that everything will be alright and I would love to have that print to give to my friend. Thanks for the giveaway.

Gravatar very cool contest. a tip of the hat, sir.

Gravatar Awesome. I will pretend that it still says everything.

Gravatar I've been a fan for about a year...you're a wonderful writer and I appreciate the humor of everyday life with kids. My husband is a stay-at-home dad (and writer) while I am a medical resident...I try my best to keep up with my blog about being a new mom and a new doctor...beautiful pictures.

doc-mama.blogspot.com
www.voodooheart.com (my husband Scott's site from his first book)

Gravatar Consider me "registered to win". I've been dying for the Romance graffiti print to come back in to your etsy shop. I just adore that one. I adore ALL of your stuff.

Thanks for having this contest and thanks for everything you do on this site. It is a joy to have such eloquent writing to have at my fingertips.

Gravatar AP Stylebook police here. Never "alright." Should read "all right." Guess it won't be noticed much now that newspapers are heading the same direction as U.S. automakers. Still an all-right photo!

Gravatar always interesting reads that you have here.

Gravatar hi. love the site. it is very encouraging to me as a new parent to read stories of someone who is doing the parenting gig with thrift store finds and beastie boys lyrics. your work is inspirational. thanks so much for sharing it.

Gravatar Hi Jim, Wood, Juniper and Gram. I've been reading your blog for 3 years now and have yet to introduce myself. I'm so lame. My resolution for the new year, comment more.

Gravatar Thanks for all the great writing - it keeps me entertained while holding a sleeping baby who refuses to sleep in his crib. It's interesting to hear about the lives of fellow lawyers/parents.

Gravatar Commenting, hoping to win Thanks for the opportunity!

Gravatar No website of my own to link to but a devoted reader to your (and many other) blogs!

Last Christmas when you posted that photo I had it as my desktop through the season. I love it!

Gravatar Wow. Well, I like the sentiment, especially if that's a building in Detroit.

Gravatar Your blog makes me miss Michigan tons. Even though I'm from the Holland area. Thanks!

Gravatar Entering your very generous contest. I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank both of you for the great writing. I always look forward to seeing new posts from you guys. And, you've inspired me to explore new parts of a city I've lived in for years. By the way, the graffiti is gone in the Dogpatch, but it was fun to look anyway.

Gravatar I love that print

Gravatar Love your blog. I've spent hours in your flickr account, fascinated.

Gravatar I love the title of the post - I too am a Detroiter (transplanted to Dexter, MI) so the title hits home. Love your work!

Gravatar Wow! What a great giveaway. Have a great holiday and health and happiness in the new year.

Gravatar Your blog and photos give me a lot of food for thought. Thanks for sharing.

Gravatar I have been reading your site ever since your guest appearance on Dooce. I always enjoy your photos and your entries. I may be the only person left on the planet without a website. I much prefer to think that everything will be alright as well.

Gravatar Happy holidays from a new dad who loves your photos and writing.

Gravatar Here's my comment. I do love that photograph.

Gravatar thanks for all the exceptional reading and compelling viewing throughout '08 (and this shot at a cool souvenir of my visits to sweetjuniper).

Gravatar a quiet admirer here. i'd love to be entered.

Gravatar I'm a lurker here, but decided to comment since that picture is amazing. I can't remember now how I came across your site but being from Michigan originally myself, I often get a good chuckle out of the things you write about. Hope the winter is lovely for you all.

Gravatar lovely giveaway. i could use the reminder.

merry christmas to your whole sweet family.

Gravatar I hope they change it back to 'Everything' because otherwise why have the words up there.

Gravatar Love Love Love your blog!!!!...
and I too could use this beautiful reminder.
From one Michiganian/Michigander? to another Thank You for sharing your family and Detroit with everyone.
Merry Christmas to you all.

Gravatar Orlando has, by far, the woofiest architecture. Unless you count the Epcot ball. My husband and I battle over Disney as a legitimate place.
-Liz, Danny, and Elliott

Gravatar My constant refrain is "It will all be okay." Works for any situation from moving to a foreign country, losing a loved one, dealing with a teenager. Currently I'm using it to deal with an eight week old Bernese Mountain dog puppy. Love your site!

Gravatar Hi. Since I never comment, I'll take this moment to say that one of my favorite stories on this site is the one where your money is stolen and then returned in Greece. So good.

Gravatar as a fellow resident of this tumultuous state, i'm glad you can find the time/money to do something nice for the world. and i'm sure i can find someone who would love some local art under the christmas tree.

Gravatar I have such a good time reading this blog--it's a treat at the end of looong days. Thanks.

Gravatar to my fellow michigander and west side native: thanks for all your wonderful words.

Gravatar I sure could use the optimism. its a great shot.

xo

b.

Gravatar I really need to be reminded of this message, and I would LOVE any of your prints, or anything the Queen comes up with

Gravatar This print would be wonderful to inspire me for 2009. '08 has been a rough year, with the only bright spots being my kids and family.

Gravatar Would love to have that hanging on my wall!

Gravatar Happy Holidays to Wood, Jim, Juniper, and Gram!

We've been reading you from the bible belt for the past few months; before then, Edinburgh, Scotland!

Gravatar Christmas is saved!

Gravatar I love all of your photography, but that print has always been my favorite. I'm sad to hear the wording has changed.

Gravatar Everything I could have said has been said before, so all I'll say is this: you're awesome.

Gravatar Love your blog! Merry, Merry!

Gravatar I love that photo. Everything about it. And I love blog contests, too. Though I rarely win, they're still awesome. Thanks for your giving spirit, Jim!

Gravatar I love that photo and all the others you've taken. Ohio (my home state) has a very similar look with a lot of the buildings that have been abandoned over time. All the big corporations have left for warmer climates.

Gravatar this would be perfect having just moved back to detroit. thanks for the photos and bloggage.

Gravatar i'm a fellow detroiter who loves your blog, and as the pregnant wife of a recently displaced Chrysler employee, i am indeed hoping that everything is going to be alright!

Gravatar I think we all need that reminder right about now...what a great photo. I love it.

Rachel

Gravatar you inspire me, daily.

Gravatar Oh, I was so sad I missed out on that print. Here's hoping!

Gravatar Your wife should sell the home-made pattern to her gorgeous Halloween costumes in your Etsy shop. Happy Holiday's to you and yours.

Cheers!

Gravatar I would LOVE the "everything is alright" print. I know just where it would go... I love contests even though I never win!

Gravatar Count me in! I have long been an admirer of your photos, particularly of abandoned detroit. And frankly, I could use a reminder that "Everything is going to be alright" from time to time.

Take care and happy holidays!

Gravatar I found your site through posthipchick and have read for several years. I live in MI, so was oddly (and freakishly) excited when you moved here. Love your pictures of Detroit - as a teacher the pictures of the book depository are especially fascinating. Thanks for what you do!

Gravatar This is one of my favorite photos you've done. I'm bummed they've changed it.

Gravatar (if you don't like our website do we lose a chance at your great photo?) i'm just a new teacher librarian and keep a blog for parents...i keep one for my babe but the intended audience is just her when she's older. that picture of all those "abandoned" computers gave me bad dreams. and made me wonder what our school district does with its old (or new?) stuff. did the people really change the word from "everything" to "nothing?" ouch is right.
thanks for the contest!

Gravatar Everything will be okay, it will be different, but it will be okay, I can get lost in your photos.

Gravatar Always a lurker but this brought me out! I adore your photography and enjoy seeing the world through your lens.

Gravatar My wife and I really enjoy your photography and blog - she reads it every day.

Gravatar Michigan native and dedicated reader here...love your writing and your photos Happy Holidays!

Gravatar Was just there last night and I actually parked across the street for a few minutes before I went in and stared at the "nothing." Either way, very powerful stuff.

Gravatar I love all the stories you share. Top two being how you and Wood met, and getting all your money stolen and then returned in Greece.

Gravatar I would love one of those photos!

Gravatar what an awesome christmas present. thanks, jdg

Gravatar Great idea! I'm watching Detroit and nervous as I'm a teacher in a small bedroom town about 45 minutes to the west. I've been insulated from the direct impact of the auto industry, positive or negative, most of my life. I'd love to share this with the students by hanging it in my high school media center.

Gravatar Thats awesome! I'd love to have this hanging my office where lots of things bring me down.

Gravatar delurking for the love of your photography. you win.

Gravatar I'm in it to win it.

I've waited my whole life to say that.

Gravatar Love it. Would actually frame it, even.

Gravatar awesome!

Gravatar everything is

Gravatar Your photography is amazing. I'm so glad that you've decided to sell it.

Gravatar Love, love, love the pics. Equally enthralled with your writing. I live in Michigan, too (but, shh...it's in one of those northern suburbs).

Gravatar Great way to make me be a first time commenter...offer something free. I enjoy your site.

Gravatar "Little darling, don't shed no tears!" Great Pics!

Gravatar Technically I live in Asia, but I would love to have this waiting for me at my parents house in Canada when I return. It would be a great first piece to hang in a new apartment.

Gravatar this photograph is magical! I missed it the first go around and would adore you even more if I were able to get one.

Gravatar No website to link to, but I am a faithful reader. I've got 2 kids about the same age as yours, my husband is a part-time SAHD, I work full time (lawyer, natch), and I love your writing (and photography).

Gravatar That photo has always been one of my favorites.

Gravatar I am a big fan of photos of the ugly (unappreciated), made beautiful--and your abandoned building images are gorgeous. Here is to hoping that flattery helps me win!
-Tanya

Gravatar Being from New Zealand I'm not eligible for the prizes (unless you'd let me pay postage?) but I wanted to say how much I enjoy your blog and your photographs. Thanks so much! Jacqui

Gravatar I've been loving your blog since Juniper sang Fairytale of New York!

Gravatar Hello there. Hope I'm not too late to the party. Your blog is such a delight and one of the few I read every time there is a post.

All the best,
Marcia

Gravatar I'm leaving Michigan this spring (to be a public interest lawyer! hooray for using MLaw degrees for unconventional things--including taking awesome photos!) and this would be a wonderful remembrance of my years here. Plus, it's just plain cool.

Gravatar Sign me up! I've been reading your blog since seeing the video of Juniper singing The Pogues' Christmas song. Not sure how I found your site, originally. But I'm impressed by your parenting, your writing, your photography. "Impressed" is putting it mildly. Keep up the great work!

Gravatar So cool!

Gravatar my favorite story is probably where Junie goes into the ladies' room for the first time alone. It reminded of how my dad, during our every-other-weekends, would stand in front of the women's restroom with me and wait for someone attractive to pass-- and then he would ask her to take me to the bathroom. That or the green doggy story.

Gravatar Love your work! Would love to win too. brooke.gorman@gmail.com

Gravatar I've wanted to buy one of your photos for a long time -- but I'm too cheap!

Gravatar I love reading about your family. Being about the same age, with a 2 year old daughter of my own, I often wish that I could be a SAHD. Especially now that twin boys will be showing up in late April.

Gravatar I hope I win! And thanks.

Gravatar You've completely reshaped my views towards the auto industry. I'm scared.

Gravatar This is such a beautiful image...simply knowing of your willingness to give brightened my day. Really do enjoy your blog and am off to look at your etsy shop right now.

Gravatar my comment. I have a serious love of Detroit, and blogs, and well, much of what you have to say. Intelligence. Thanks.

Gravatar i am engaged by your blog and am so excited to see you give away something that your wife would make as i LOVED the blanket that she made for your girl.

here's hoping!!

Gravatar You are my favorite thing on the internet.

Gravatar love your photography! Very inspiring. Thanks for the contest.

Gravatar really? all I have to do is post a comment? too great. i love your blog and learning from it. (I'm sure you hear that all the time.) The kids are adorable too.

Gravatar It's hard for the rest of the country to grasp what we have been living through for the past 3 years.
Thanks for clarifying the struggle to so many outside of our region.

Gravatar Cool! I'd love to win one of your fantastic prints.

Gravatar Oooh, what a lovely photo. I hope I win!

Gravatar I know just where I'd put that photo - thanks for spreading the cheer!

Gravatar I figure one or two things might be alright. Defensive pessimism seems to work pretty well for me.

Gravatar Love your photos, and your blog.

Gravatar Always enjoy your insight and esp. your photos....... they seem to have a soul.....

Gravatar Su sitio web es fantástico.

Gravatar My favorite thing about reading is that it gives my husband (lawyer) and I things to chew over. A fresh perspective.

Plus, yer kids're cute.

Gravatar I love your work, and I'm always a sucker for a giveaway.

Gravatar If we pay for the postage, can we enter from Dubai as well?

Gravatar that photo has actually been my wallpaper for so long that it's awkward when i change it to something else now.

i adore the graphic nature of your photography! you have a very interesting point of view and a unique and interesting assortment of inspirations that shine through clearly.

Gravatar Your blog is one of my favorites. Excellent writing and beautiful photography.

Gravatar I have followed you for a couple of months -- actually I found you while searching for enrichment for my toddler. Like you I am a transplant to this region, and I am deeply moved by the graphic poetry and history the area is steeped in.

Why your print resonates with me: with the collapse of my marriage, the reality of a bleak job market, and the determination to provide a stable, loving, sanctuary for my 21 month old son have intersected causing my normal enthusiasm to wane. Your image reminds me of my core -- I love this city, snow is one of my favorite natural elements (I cannot help but smile everytime I see snow), art is a gift, and generosity is an elixir to a battered soul.

I hope....

Gravatar I also wanted to thank you for your perspective on the auto industry. You nailed it!

Gravatar I'd like to give this to my Dad who is recovering from a stroke.
Yours from New Orleans,
LAM

Another differenc in New Orleans and Detroit: how excited we get over a few inches of the white stuff.

Gravatar Difficult days indeed! (said the woman who works for the automotive supplier). This would be perfect to hang in our office. Thanks for the contest...we all can use a lift in this year of the Laura Ingalls Wilder Christmas

Gravatar Love all your photos. Hope I win!

Gravatar love your work, jim. fingers crossed.

Gravatar Long time lurker. Love what you do from afar

Gravatar Living in NC, but will always miss MI snow. Except when it's March and still snowing.

Gravatar Love the photo. We need a little snow in Miami....

Gravatar Here's to hoping!

Gravatar Long time lurker, love your photographs and blog. Best wishes for the upcoming year.

Gravatar you rock. miss your playlists.

Gravatar Sweet Juniper that's a hell of a contest you've got going on here!

Gravatar I sent a link to your etsy story and blog to a fellow teacher in NY. I love your photos (and your writing is amazing as well).

Gravatar let's keep the faith the EVERYTHING will be alright!
Your blog makes me so happy in that you and Wood enjoy your children and find so much humor in them! Also I am happy to see other parents expose their children to the city! Detroit is beautiful even in all it's decaying parts

Gravatar Tell those people who changed the sign that optimism is only dead if we give in to pessimism. They deserve some coal! I much prefer the happy sign you captured in your picture. I send you all happy holiday thoughts.

Gravatar I visit your blog every day, you're part of my daily routine! Beautiful photos and OMG, the Mr. T coloring book? PRICELESS!!! Merry Christmas

Gravatar Fingers are crossed!

Gravatar Here is how I've described your blog to others: your exposes of Detroit make it one of the few personal blogs that is not self-indulgent, but actually contributes to the betterment of society. Thank you for that.

Gravatar Everything is going to be alright, even if it doesn't seem like it.

Gravatar *raises hand higher than anyone else*

me me me! p-p-p-please?

Gravatar Give me a little Detroit for the holidays!

Gravatar This Michigan native has her fingers crossed... Happy holidays!

Gravatar Pictures please. Ever think of doing note cards? I would buy Detroit Christmas Cards if I could (and lulu would print them cheap).

Gravatar love it!

Gravatar Oh how fantastic. And sad that you're shutting down the etsy store. I bought a print from you early early in the summer and I love it so much. Not commenting because I think I'll win (although I would love to) but just to tell you how much I enjoy your writing and photography. Lucky winners these will be.

Gravatar Very cool photo. The snow makes it even better. If you just keep looking up you'll "get the message".

Love your blog and your photos whether they are taken in Detroit or the Burgh or any other place you happen to be.

Gravatar Nice of you to hold a contest; I'd love to win but the chances aren't looking good!

Gravatar Can't remember how I came to know your site, but I love checking in. Your photos are just amazing. My grandmother grew up in Detroit and later met my grandfather at U. of M. in Ann Arbor. They transplanted to the South (Alabama) after getting married and really never spent time in Michigan again. I would love to come explore the city one day. I did have a layover at the airport in Detroit once. Very cool indeed.

Gravatar Having gone through the dot com bust, I am hoping I can survive this one too. Having the print will help.

Gravatar I'd love it...

strugglin over here too, tryin 2 keep workin & stay above water!!

love the blog & the slightly cynical, slightly logical schema ;p

Gravatar Thank you for letting us all have a peek into your wonderful family life

Gravatar Thanks for you photos and all you share.
Happy Holidays

Gravatar You rock. I come here for the amazing photos and cute tales of your little uns.

Gravatar Saturday morning achievements:

1. Send the email I've been knotted up about all week to the person who can make or break my New Year's plans.

2. Enter a contest to win a Sweet Juniper photo.

Done and done. Next up: world-conquering.

Thanks, Jim!

Gravatar thanks for all you do!

Gravatar Sign me up! This photo reminds me of the little "It will all work out. It will be so nice" song we sing around here when things are looking bleak.

Cheers,
Rachel Carey

Gravatar Yes!!! #471--my favorite number!!!

Gravatar Your blog rocks. Thanks for making a blog so classy and thought provoking just so very cool. I'm always sending friends (and even a few strangers) to sweet-juniper. And your photography is just f-ing amazing.

Happy Holidays!

Gravatar What a generous idea. Cheers to you.

Gravatar Goal for December: Enter contest.

Check.

Love the photo!

Gravatar Wonderful blog, wonderful giveaway!

Gravatar a longtime reader but infrequent commenter. how can i resist adding my name to the list?

Gravatar Add me on as well. Always have loved your photos.

Gravatar I've been reading you for some time, thank you for sharing yourselves with the public.

Gravatar well gosh. this is very nice of you guys. and although i probably don't deserve to enter because i am so damn guilty for lurking all of the time, the optimist in me just can't resist. i am throwing my name into the hat. and saying thanks for the constantly intelligent writing. this site is heart wrenching and hilarious in equal measure, and that's just about perfect in my book.

*andrea (scout)

Gravatar Your photos always move me. Thanks!

Gravatar How nice of you to just give one away. Now that's the holiday spirit, really.

Gravatar Oh, I love the picture and the sentiment. So sad that they changed it.

Gravatar To win this would be beyond awesome.

Gravatar Merry Christmas!

Gravatar Wow - just what I needed to see, if not win. Been a hell of year. Let's get it over with. Thank you for your beautiful site, which always brings me a smile!

Gravatar What a neat idea.

I've become an etsy freak this holiday. It makes me feel better to support the little(er) guy.

Hope the giftees feel the same way, dammit.

Good luck everyone!

Gravatar Wow, I'm honored even to be included with my name.

Gravatar Be Happy. Bring Peace.

Gravatar Thanks for doing what you do.

Gravatar I have been reading your blog for a long time and love hearing your stories both in words and in pictures. Happy Holidays!

Gravatar Been reading your blog for years and love your stuff. Struggling mid-western cities unite! (Cleveland here)

Gravatar Your photos are beautiful, Sweet Juniper is a always a breath of fresh air. This is the 1st time I've commented, though I've been obsessed with your blog(exclusively) for 2.5 years now. I'd love to have that photo, but I mostly want to express my gratitude and appreciation for everything you give in all aspects of Sweet Juniper.

Gravatar Hi from another Detroiter with a child, here by choice.

Gravatar I am in love with this picture--I was recently browsing through your Etsy and wanted to buy it, but $70 was a little steep for a med student.

But, you know how it goes.

Gravatar That sign was inspirational, now it's just downright depressing.

Gravatar Gorgeous, and a desperately needed reminder.

Gravatar I'm all about free goodies.

Gravatar Thank you for the gift of your blog. It's definitely one of the very best!

Gravatar Fabulous print. Yet another great shot from Sweet Juniper. Happy Holidays!

Gravatar I have to keep telling myself that very sentiment every day. My husband and I are expecting our first child in February, and it's with excitement and not a little fear that we go into this next phase in our lives.
I've included my husband's URL for his (unfortunately failed) bid for a Kansas state representative seat. Sadly, being a Democrat in a semi-rural area of Kansas doesn't get you far. But dammit, he is a believer in the goodness of people and their desire to do right by others, and he'll keep trying.
You both are inspirations in creativity and parenting. Thanks for the blog!

Gravatar I have always loved that photograph!

Gravatar That's an awesome picture! I love all of your work!

Gravatar Here's to a New Year coming.

Gravatar Keep up the good work. I really enjoy your site.

Gravatar Nice photography. Funny blog, especially the one about Metallica and Precious Moments.

Gravatar I found you through dooce, and have since read you often. And I enjoy hearing the father's side to stay at home parenting.

Gravatar I would be elated to win one of your pieces of art! Your website is one not to be missed! Love it!

Gravatar I was born and raised in Redford and I've spent much of my life in Detroit (visiting my Grandparents, eating, drinking, shopping, ect.). Despite all the time I've spent downtown, there's still so much I've never seen. Thanks for being my eyes!

Gravatar Fingers crossed.

Gravatar That's a beautiful print, please include me in the contest!

Gravatar Pick me! Pick me! I'm a fellow San Francisco to the Midwest (Ohio) transplant, love your writing and art. Keep it up. Best wishes.

Gravatar I am envious of your photographic eye. Your photos are pure emotion.

Gravatar I have to insist it's 'everything' rather than 'nothing'. I insist!

Gravatar A sweetjuniper original would do so much for my blank apartment walls! Thank you for doing this

Gravatar I have loved this print ever since you first started selling it. Whenever I have had the money you were not selling and when I didn't have the extra money it would be for sale.

We have had the worst year of our lives. My husband started out this year in the hospital and has ended it the same way. Our daughter had surgery in July and ended up being in the hospital the whole month. This saying has been what has gotten me through this year in particular.

I have enjoyed reading your blog for a long time now.

Merry Christmas!

Gravatar Love your photographs! (I'll actually buy some in the distant future when I have an income.)

Gravatar thanks.

Gravatar Daughter, Isabel, is June's age and twins, Edge and Zeb, are Gram's age. I find MUCH humor and familiarity in your words. Keep it up!

Gravatar When this all started, all the craziness, I was driving down woodward and could see mocad coming up in the distance and thought oh that sign will be so comforting and then as I got closer I saw it's new sentiment and I literally teared up.. I went in the next day and begged them to change it back..... the guy at the front desk said alot of people had asked the same thing

Gravatar Love all of your photos, and your blog has meant so much to me for a long time now. If I won this, I'd put it next to my husband's desk. He just had surgery to attempt to remove what turned out to be an inoperable brain tumor. You gave him advice on HDR a few months ago after he requested by email. He's really trying to get into it. Thanks for that!

Gravatar Hi Dutch,

On adore tes photos! We love your work. My boyfriend and I live up in the arctic where he is a full time teacher, and I am part-time stay at home mom and part-time teacher. Our baby is one and a half, and we decided that I would not go back to work full time this year, so I could take care of him. Sometimes I doubt my choices for half a second, because I make about one third of the money I used to make when I worked full time, and because people often ask why my boy is not in full time day care. In those instances I think about your family and how you gave up a highly paying job for the benefit of your children, and that makes me forget that I am not raking in a lot of dinero...

Thank you for the inspiration,

Sophie Beaudoin et James Vandenberg

Gravatar Everything, nothing ... whatever. I'm in it for the snowflakes.

Gravatar This was my desktop picture for like 3 months (during which time I was reading your blog regularly.) It wasn't until weeks later that I found out it was one of yours! It's a great shot.

Gravatar Love your site because it's always thought-provoking!

Gravatar Your site is fresh air. Keep up the good work!

Gravatar Another Detroiter here. Hanging in there and trying to stay upbeat. It's getting harder, huh?

Gravatar great photo, and sentiment.

Gravatar Love your photos and your blog... I would be honored to hang such a beautiful piece of work in my home.

Cheers,
Lisa

Gravatar I like your blog. I love Detroit. I'm hoping for the win.

Gravatar Love the blog, love the photos, would love to win!

Gravatar I love this photo - fits sentiments about the past year to a tee.

Gravatar Please include me in your contest. It's a lovely photo.

Christopher

Gravatar I love your photos, and I love your blog.

Gravatar Would love to add a new print to my "Sweet Juniper" Collection!
Happy Holidays Junipers (and the Internet), really... EVERYTHING Is Going To Be Alright!

Gravatar long time reader, first time poster. I've always been amazed not just with your way with words, but your photos as well. (seems to be the going theme with comments but it's oh so true!)

Gravatar I guess you can't win if you don't play... Please toss my name in the hat!

Gravatar Dutch for president!

Gravatar Any chance you're working on some concrete countertops?

Gravatar I'll give it a shot! I'm a west-sider who spent some time in the DE-troit this weekend, and thought of the sentiments you've shared here often.

Gravatar Nothing witty to say. Just enjoy your blog & art. Thanks.

Gravatar I update my site (sporadically) for family and friends. With that said, you are welcome to read it too.

Gravatar Pick me! Please?

Gravatar I love this. Thanks for the giveaway.

Gravatar I want!

Gravatar Love your work. I've always been partial to graffiti and abandoned building shots. As a teacher, I have been particularly enamored with the former book depository photos... simply brilliant.

Gravatar I feel embarrassed that this is the first time I've ever commented, but I really do love this site and I look forward to reading it every day.

Gravatar Awesome!
Thak you for the chance!

Gravatar your blog is always inspirational - your wife's sewing inspired me to make my 10-month old a doll from old shirts for Christmas. All the best...

Gravatar Thanks for spreading a little cheer during this unusually glum season.

Gravatar Love the photo. The snow makes it truer, somehow.

Gravatar Stunning! Love your blog by the way.

Gravatar I'm a native Detroiter living in Brooklyn, and I wear an absurd number of Detroit t-shirts to work as consistently as I can. I never miss an opportunity to talk to people about the city--in fact I often create them. I'm sure more than a few people think of me as the crazy Detroit guy. Lately, instead of yammering at somebody at length about Detroit's history and circumstances, I just directing them to your site. It's saved me a lot of time, and maybe my reputation. (Probably not.)

I'd love to put my civic pride on my wall, as well as on my sleeve!

Gravatar Your contest brought me out of lurking to actually comment. I really enjoy your work.

Gravatar Holy cow, that's a lot of comments... but I guess 1 to 553 odds aren't so bad for a contest...

Gravatar Man, I would love one of those photos.

Gravatar I love the way you blend the history in with the fabulous photos. Such tragedy and inspiration all in one.

Gravatar Love the blog and the photos. Would be honored to hang one of your photos
epowen.blogspot.com

Gravatar i really love your site.

Gravatar It's really something to see the community that's built up here: art, family, urbanity!

Gravatar I love your photos, would be great to have one!

Gravatar Wow! I'd love to win *any* of your photos!!!

Gravatar i sing the song "three little birds" to my three little ones each night before bed. every little thing's gonna be alright!

Gravatar I already know the spot to hang it up!

Gravatar sweet juniper is one of the first sites i started reading years ago and still one of my favorites. and wow. i'd love to have one of your pictures.

Gravatar let us hope that everything will be alright!

Gravatar My sweet mother always reminds me that this is true, even though she personally could have every reason to believe otherwise. Thank you!I wish I had a homepage to link to. Soon! Happy Holidays to you and your adorable family.

Gravatar I'm also a first-time commenter, but a long-time reader. I love your writing and your photography, and I hope you're having a wonderful holiday season!

Gravatar I would love to have this hanging in my living room.

Gravatar The photograph is wonderful, but I really just wanted to finally take a moment to let you know how much I enjoy your writing, your thoughtfulness, and your eye both for decomposition and for wild life.

I'm not the first or the only one to appreciate it--just one more voice in the wilderness. Thanks.

Gravatar So sad that they changed it to Nothing. So, so sad.

I know I prefer the original sentiment as well, and would love it in my house, as it seems I've missed it on Etsy once again! drats!

Best wishes to you at the Sweet Juniper household.

Gravatar Wow, how generous of you. Thanks! Love the writing, your stories and photos, and the Nixon era children's books!

Gravatar Thank you for this contest. I bought a print from your Etsy shop for my husband. We would love to own another.

Gravatar I've always admired your photo skills, esp your architectural shots of a desolate Detroit. Just awesome.

Gravatar I'm a former Detroiter and have been following your posts for a while now, even though this is my first time posting. I love you photos and would love to win one!

Gravatar Pick MEEEEEE!

Gravatar I do not maintain a website, but I am certainly a devoted reader of many!! My fingers are crossed.

Gravatar Your blog is easily my favorite. I'm a graduate student in Ann Arbor, and a photographer. So I recommend your pictures to all sorts of people. I'd be thrilled if you took a look at my photos!

Gravatar i love it!

Gravatar My family is having a shitty, shitty month, and so if i had seventy bucks to spare I would absoloutly buy one. But here is my comment!

Gravatar My comment
From Michigan myself so I love looking at your pics.

Gravatar randomly choose? damn. I was hoping I could slip you a fiver for an edge on the competition.

merry xmaz y'all!

Gravatar I've been coming here often lately because your posts are always inspiring, hopeful, and put a smile on my face. Thank you for that. I think everyone needs a little hopefulness right about now.

Gravatar I love your photography!

Gravatar Glad for the nudge to leave a comment.

Gravatar Your blog is wonderful. I've been reading for a long time and it just keeps getting better.

There is always hope and I think that you are doing a wonderful thing giving away these photographs.

Thank you. I hope you and yours have a wonderful holiday and a much better new year.

Gravatar I'd love this in my office. A reminder that everything IS going to be alright. The generosity of others gives me hope.
Thanks!

Gravatar Your photos are stunning!

Gravatar Longtime regular reader from AZ. Love your work - writing and photography.

Gravatar everything is nothing is everything. right? it's buddhist graffiti in the snow.

love the photo, your writing.

Gravatar Would love a print. I am a frequent reader from Boston with a 6 and 3 year old and enjoy both of your perspectives on parenting and urban living. Happy holidays!--Maisie

Gravatar i would *love* to win one of your photos! your photography and writing bring me back to your site again and again. i live on the west side of michigan, and your blog helps keep me linked to another part of our state that i don't see very often. have a lovely holiday season with your family!

Gravatar Thank you for your site and this contest!

Gravatar I love all your photos, plus I have a blank wall that needs some loving.

Gravatar jim and wood,

have been reading for a long time now. instead of preparing a nursery, husband and i are preparing the spare room for my mother. she arrives from australia next week, and i'm hoping she'll get here in time to be one of the first to talk to our baby. actually, i'm hoping she'll chant in farsi or arabic to the newborn and let some of that stuff sink in since it never did with me.

her room has space for one of your unique photos. please.

t'ra,
leila

Gravatar I'm in! This is sweet!

Gravatar You have always been one of my absolute favorites! What an excellent holiday contest.

Gravatar Ooh - how fun!

Gravatar I love your website and I would love a print. Your photography is fantastic.

Gravatar My comment, and my complete and unswerving adoration.

Gravatar Hello there, I love your work (as you may recall -- I sent you some trip ideas when you drove from SF to Detroit) and have been long inspired by this shot. My Sophia is a little younger than Juniper, and Thalia Jayne is now 4 months old so I feel a kinship having been an avid fan of your blog since Soph was only a few months old. You have an eye I love to borrow, one that helps me see the world with fly-eyes - from more than my own perspective - which is invaluable. Aside from your loathing for Cat Power, I'm in.

And if I don't get the print for free I will definitely buy it....

Happy happy.

Gravatar Another longtime listener with kids about the same ages as yours. Love the photograph, and the sentiment. Take care.

Gravatar I love your photos! The one of the tree growing from the books is going in my classroom one day.

Gravatar this is a sweet idea. my husband is just now painting the walls after us having been homeless since april. cheers and warm wishes.

-becca

Gravatar Would be so very happy to have the print (or a choice of one of your others). Thanks!

Gravatar It can't hurt to enter! I'm a big fan of this journal, and of all your photography!

Gravatar Your photos are really remarkable and I always look forward to all of your posts. What a generous thing to do, not just the photo, but all of it. Thanks for putting yourself out there. You are really an inspiration.
Merry Christmas,
and thanks.

Gravatar wow. okay, contest is over. any comments after this one will not be considered in my random selection.

I will be announcing winners tomorrow.

Thank you all for saying so many nice things in these comments. I've spent the weekend looking at so many new sites and added so many to my reader. I wish I could send everyone a photo.

Gravatar Optimism reigns. Let's hope. I love the photos and your writing. Happy holidays to you and yours...

Gravatar Oh my gosh! I had that image on my desktop for a while. I didn't know you were selling it! I would love to have a copy of it.

Gravatar Oooh, I remember seeing that the first night I arrived in Detroit. I was slightly jetlagged and disoriented and I could have sworn it was talking directly to me. I made the van full of other travel writers (one of them from Livonia, if you remember) pull over on the side of the road so I could take a hundred pictures. When I got back in, they were all discussing where Aretha Franklin's house was and whether or not we might see her on our trip.

Gravatar Here's to hope.

Gravatar I would love to win this print, I am really sad I never purchased one when I had the chance - the phrase really resonates with me and I love the snowfall.

Gravatar I am sad you're closing your etsy shop. But as long as you keep sharing your wanderings and found-dereliction photos with us here, I suppose I'll survive. I would love to win any ol print ya got.
BTW my friends' daughter Juniper will be born next week. They didn't know about your Juniper - it's an honest coincidence. It was the natural follow-up to their first daughter, Hawthorne.

Gravatar Love this blog!

Gravatar Thanks for the positivity

Gravatar De-lurking from one downtown dweller to another...

Gravatar I would be thrilled to have one of your photographs hanging on my wall.

Gravatar i would be honored to have one of your photos. love your blog.

Gravatar Love the photo - love your site. Faithful reader, if not faithful commenter.

Gravatar You are the absolute best and I've been a devoted readers for years.

Gravatar I've bought a couple of your prints so far and would love to add to the collection.

Gravatar Faithful lurker, first time commenter. I love your writing and insights, thank you for taking the time to write for us.

Gravatar Totally missed the contest but with such good feedback perhaps you'll consider a reprint. I salute your work, positivity and insights. Thanks for sharing. Happy New Year to you and family!

Gravatar Although I have approximately zero chance of winning, I simply must say your blog is one of my weekly highlights. Fantastic writing and photography. I guess I'll just have to save my pennies and actually BUY some of your photos. But how cool would it be to start my collection with a great story attached ("Against all odds, I won this from my fave blogger")? And if you knew me, you'd know that I would tell that story to anyone who would listen. I love finagling claims to fame out of seemingly ordinary situations.

Gravatar hoping its not too late, I love your photos!

Gravatar I don't have a website but I do keep up with flickr. I check your flickr site quite often too, and your blog is one of my very favorites ever.

I think I have been reading your stuff for over 2 years now!

I would be thrilled to have one of your photos in my home.

Gravatar Shoot. Just missed this.

Lovely photos.

Gravatar I'm too late for the contest, but I wanted to say that the hat is absolutely adorable! Someday (when I have a little one), I'll be dying for that pattern.

Gravatar Love your site, and your pics. I figure I am too late. But just in case, because I love the hat, and I have a 9 month old daughter that would look splendid in it.

Gravatar This is funny--I forgot to enter the contest! I love the photos. The graffiti one is my favorite, although it is hard to choose. I think what I like about it is that, even if you are familiar with that kind of graffiti it defamiliarizes it and makes it beautiful. I know people claim graffiti as art but that kind is not art. It is really difficult to know what the red is. OK, I'm not making sense but your use of color is fantastic in all the photos.

Gravatar LOVE your blog, and wish you were my neighbors. If you ever think about moving to Denver, I'll show you where the attorneys/former hipsters turned parents live. You guys would love it here.

Gravatar Your photos are stunning, I would love one.

Gravatar Bummer, I missed the deadline. I too love your photos, especially of the urban decay and old schools and books.

Gravatar I love this photo and am new to your blog, but I really enjoy it! Thanks!

Gravatar i think i'm too late-- but i do love your blog and photos-- would love to win. happy holidays!

Gravatar any chance you'll be printing more of this particular photo? i didn't win the contest, but i'd really like to purchase a print of it - pref in the 5x7 size, but 8x10 would work too.

i like your other work, but for some reason this one really speaks to me!
