Best one yet. I'm also really digging Amy's bedroom, with the quilt and the wallpaper and the handmade-looking prints on the walls. Apparently, thirty years later, Amy founded Etsy.

Welcome to the Uncanny Valley, Amy.
That picture of Silent Sam in the tree freaked me out the most. Great post!

OK, I can calm down now. One grubby copy with "soiled cover and browning from age" is on its way to Durham for the grand price of $3.64. Crisis averted, covetousness abated. Now I must convince S that this is her new favorite bedtime book. We've been talking a lot lately about "boy's toys" vs "girl's toys" (a charming concept she picked up at school, which I am trying to counter). I like that there are some photos of boys playing with dolls. I hope the accompanying text is not about them being Communist sissy-pants.

OK, this really freaked me out. I'm a fan of Sara McLachlan (and Pixar movies) and I have the song "When she loved me" on my ipod. I just started the song, when I read this post. It added to the overall enjoyment of the post immensely! Very, very weird and funny.

Okay, that photo with her looking in between the doll's legs. . .what are those ropes on the doll's bed. it looks like a cat o'nine tails. wtf? I know you must rearrange the photos and probably leave a few out, but I cannot imagine how that picture fit into a story different than this.
seriously disturbing!

Hi there. I saw many of my visitors today were coming over from your site and was delighted to see a similar book to the one I posted. Apparently there is a Lonely Doll collection. And the author of the books led a strange life herself. I was so tempted to "lose" this book when it came time to take it back to the library. So disturbing.
You have a delightful blog! I enjoyed looking around.

Having seen my daughter change innumerable dolls' and stuffed animals' diapers, and remembering my own interest in my naked Barbies, I don't find this disturbing at all (tho I do find Jim's recaptioning funny). My kid is watching me type this and insists I type her name. OK: SADIE!!!!

My mom taught a high school home ec course called Child Development. I remember her classroom having that book in the mid 1980s, and that it creeped me out then (even with the real words).
That publisher must have given a lot of school districts a sweet deal.

Very fun! Just out of curiosity, what is the process for being granted permission to use these photos, as I assume they are copyright protected. Or perhaps they are too "vintage" to fall under copy rights. Have you had any hassles getting rights to them?

Scary, but not as scary as the actual Nixon era was, if I remember correctly. I think I had that doll, though, and one of my friends looked a lot like that girl...

I couldn't agree more about the creepiness of porcelain dolls. Open-minded as I am, I just cannot understand anyone NOT feeling this way.
Every time I thought I had a favorite line to cite in the comments, another came along, until I would have been just reciting the entire post back to everyone, for no reason at all. Well done.

Well, I'M scared.
No, I mean really. I'm going to have to sleep with the light on. Damn, did I see this movie as a child or something? You've reached deep into my psyche.
Music box music. Nice touch. Yeah. I DID see this movie. Or else you've somehow tapped into my childhood nightmares.
Of course, the last scene was the parents putting out Amy's possessions on the street after her tragic death. Doll somehow on top of forlorn box. Cue Eliza, on a walk with her mom. "Oh mommmy! A doll! Can I keep her?" Mom reluctantly agrees. Terrifying close up of doll's somehow expressive face. Fade to black.

OMG! I remember reading this book over and over again in Kindergarten in 1987, and have never forgotten these images! I just did a Google search for "amy black and white photography book" and this post came up! This makes me so happy! Although I can't believe how creepy-looking this book is now! Awesome!!! Thank you for posting this!
