Oy. Glad to hear you're past the worst of it (until the very end when we all feel like the bottom AND top halves of the elephant) now.
And the long sleepless slog ahead is most definitely an exuse to take a nap whenever humanly possible before the bebe joins you on the outside!

I've always wondered how working ladies manage to hide the morning pukies from their coworkers.
And I've always thought it sucked that those first three months--when you're in that giddy I'm-having-a-baby stage but also in that leave-me-alone-I'm-tired-and-sick stage--are the months that most people have to keep it all to themselves. You mean I can't be publicly excited OR publicly cranky? Where's the fun in that?

We're closer than I thought--I turn 17 weeks on Saturday! I feel so much better now too, although I am still pretty lazy. And I have been feeling movement too--much earlier than I did with Maggie. I love it.
I'm so glad you're feeling better. I like the definition of this as the time where you have not one thing to bitch about. Even at the end of this trimester, you know you'll still be "cute-pregnant" not "ginormous-pregnant" and the lovely glow kicks in, as does gorgeous pregnancy hair!
Last time I would tell people, "So far, second trimester is totally my favorite trimester!"
Although--do you find you're more tired than you remember being with Junie? I don't know if it's just being closer to 40 than 30 this time, or what, but I am still more tired than normal.
Very happy all is going well in the Juniper household.

It's crazy to read your post because it sounds exactly like my first trimester with my second baby. It was awful. My hope was that a rough pregnancy equalled great baby, and I was right. Pregnancy number one was a breeze; Baby number one was extremely difficult, colicky, poor sleeper and eater. Pregnancy number two was like being on a death march; baby number two is a dream. Actually slept through the night at 2.5 months old. I didn't even know that could happen.
Enjoy your pregnancy as much as possible. It really is a blip on the radar.

I feel lucky because I didn't puke or have nausea with this pregnancy (unlike with my first), but the tiredness! Thank goodnes it's over.
When we moved, Kevin unpacked my suitcase in which stored all my pregnancy clothes. At first I was upset--I didn't want them yet!--but now, at almost 19 weeks, I'm thankful. I'll be pulling on those pants sooner than I thought.
Hooray for the second trimester!

Don't be distracted by the ooze of green envy pooling on my keyboard. I've got about 4 weeks of rat-stomach left.
But I am happy for....zzzzz.

oh dear god- does rat-stomach usually last until 16 weeks? I'm hoping to get pregnant soon and it's not the running through the lab with my hand over my mouth that scares me, but the 3 hours a day I spend commuting...I have no idea how to work around that one...

Part of the reason I only have one... how can you nap enough to deal with pregnancy tiredness when you are being climbed? I'm glad you're feeling better, though. Supposedly every pregnancy is different, so there's a good chance you really didn't feel that bad with Juniper.

I'm never really sure what to say when pregnant women talk about the shitty parts of being pregnant, as I feel any attempt at sympathizing will get me punched in the face (and probably rightly so). So I'll leave it at this: I'm glad you're not puking all the time with migraines. That sounds like it sucks big hairy fat ones.

Yes, I forgot to mention that--my SIL had a horrible pregnancy with her second. Her pregnancy with my first nephew was much easier and he was a dream baby. And you know what--nightmare pregnancy equaled the sweetest, smiliest, most easygoing baby I have ever seen ever, and I know some pretty chill babies. The only time he yells is if he sees food and it is not being shoveled into his mouth with speed. I seriously smile just thinking about him.

Oh, that first trimester. Every single trip to the grocery store for four months ended in me throwing up in the parking lot while my husband explained to concerned passers-by that I wasn't actually sick.
For me, what was even worse was the first three weeks of June, which happened to be the last three weeks of my pregnancy. It was hotter than the surface of the sun, I couldn't sleep, and the only place I was anything resembilng comfortable was in the pool, waddling around in my maternity swimsuit like a walrus in blue gingham.

My first pregnancy was a breeze. My second was hell. My first baby was a girl. My second - a boy. Both are sweet angels, tho - neither were difficult babies.
I'm glad you're feeling better! Maybe Junie is getting a little brother!

elephant pants equal tiny little babies, and other contradictions. puke leads to the continuation of the universe. god only had to wave his fingers for roughly six days, but women have to heave over a toilet in order to recreate the universe, again and again.

That bit about enjoying "the last one you'll get to experience" rings so true, except that I felt it more with the last couple days of nursing my daughter, than during the pregnancy. I think the 1st pregnancy is so full of surprises and unanticipated change (look! in the shower! colostrum!!) that there's no time to be present. That, and literally striking the days off the calendar until you meet the little one.
So I can see how with #2 you could savor the changes, realizing that this life stage is very transient and weird and mutable. Strange to think that the flutters will turn into kicks, and then vanish altogether.

My first pregnancy; no sickness, gained 35 lbs, but otherwise super easy, easy labor, easy baby girl.
Second; you described my 1st tri, I had to tell my boss early cuz I figured she knew already (all that running to the bathroom). All kinds of issues, which eventually turned into low amniotic fluid. But I only gained 10 lbs. Also had a girl. Still easy labor, not quite as easy a baby.
You quickly forget all the negative. It's hard to remember when you're focusing on the butterflys in your tummy.
I would LOVE to be pregnant again. Maybe because I know this is probably it for us (I'd go for 3, hubby says no). Even tho you're glad to be past it, (and I'm glad for you), I'd happily be in your place. Babies are good. YUM.
Sara you'll carry a bucket (coffe can) in the car with you. Make sure it has a good lid! It sucks, but you'll work it out.

No one in my 5 person office noticed that I puked every day for 17 weeks. Either I was a super sleuth or they were pretty self centered - probably both.
We're ready in most ways for #2, but haven't decided our kid quota. The thought that it could be my last pregnancy has me putting it off. And I'm normally not into delaying gratification.
I'm glad you've come out of the worst part with an appreciation for the gift that you're experiencing. You awoke from 1st trimester hibernation just in time to see the leaves start to turn.

I'm just at 15 weeks and still in the pits of hell. My headaches have lessened, but the puking has increased (shudder). I can't wait to no longer have any excuses for being a good-for-nothing, although it might take me awhile to divulge that information!

I'm so glad to hear you are feeling better. With Petunia, I remember feeling trapped (like in Groundhog Day) when my fortunes didn't change at that magic 14 week mark like all the books said it would.
Enjoy the flutters. Those early ones are so magical. You try to get your husband to feel them too, but then the baby stops moving or he doesn't have his hand in the right spot or the movements just aren't big enough to feel yet. So for a short while, it's this secret that you and your baby share. Soon enough your big belly will be bouncing around like a battery-operated toy during meetings, freaking out your coworkers.

The bottom half of an elephant suit...that's great.
I just had my second, well, three months ago, and the pregnancy seemed to fly by. Probably because I was getting climbed on by a two year old. Unfortunately it feels like her first three months have flown by as well...anyway, glad you're not puking anymore!

Wood, I suffer from horrendous migraines and have my whole life. I want to get pregnant soon, but those migraines are what I dread. The thought of going 9 months without drugs makes me shake and brake out in a cold sweat.

This comment is for the above post:
Dutch, I'm a long time reader of SJ! and love reading you and Woods thoughts. However, today I'm a little unclear why you were using all that energy worrying about the future of Juney and capoeira. I think those college students were doing something really productive and beautiful with their free time. They were creating, they were moving. They could be doing any number of less than savory activities. I would pay endless money for my future children to be so occupied. I think you get this in the end of your post, sort of. Or Wood gets it. Or whatever. I don't know you so I won't judge, I guess I'm asking for elaboration on what you were thinking. but I was just so...discomobulated over your reaction to it! I'd expect cool photos or something. Thoughts?

hi, i've been a long time reader of SJ, and i'm 13 weeks pregnant. i thought my m/s had gone... but came back with a vengence yesterday. i spent most of the afternoon retching over the toilet at work. i work on a floor of 100+ but hopefully noone noticed.
Glad to hear your m/s is fading away, and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy!

Bossy thinks you've taken this honesty crap one step too far - why not let everyone think you're still sleepy and morning sick? Then you can go back to bed behind closed doors - and this time read and eat cookies and stuff. Sigh.

lovely. the 2nd trimester was always the "zone" for me too. and i remember so clearly the first time i felt each of my babies move, getting very still and "listening'' for them, being answered with that deep sea flutter, brush of anenome.

Fly-by comment hear... Just a little pregnancy pant trick that let me wear my normal pants far into 2nd trimester (even with twins). Maybe you know this one allready but you take a smallish elastic band, wrap one end around button, loop it through and onto the button again. Your fly maybe hanging open but long shirts can cover such exposure. Good luck!
