I totally went there when we were little (70's) and used to go to Holland Michigan on Vacation, That was before the outlet malls, steak and shake, and peir 1's took over every crevice of the world. It was a fun place. We went back and visited about 5 some years ago and it was fun for the kids but somehow the Hanes outlet in the distance somehow broke the magic. Did you get your name burned into a Wooden Shoe?

I loved this post! I grew up dutch reformed, my mom's from the Fulton IL branch, they have 'dutch days' a much lamer version (yes it is possible) of Tulip Time. I have a picture of me in a delft style painted baby prison from our trip to Holland as a kid.
My dad actually wore wooden shoes to garden (really helps your popularity as a kid!). Now I find myself going back to those roots- my house is a chilly 62 in winter and I celebrate Sinterklaas day with my son.

I am Emily (commenter above's) husband. We went to the Dutch village in our pre children days.. having gone to Amsterdam on our honeymoon with a day trip out to Edam, it is a somewhat authentic experience, yet it is still not right somehow... I love your reference to the Steak and Shake and Wal Mart parking lot, man that place must have been cool back in the 60s and 70s.
