Oh my goodness! I would watch this all the time as a kid. I had so many nightmares about the Jabberwocky.
I never realized how many random actors they had in this. Scott Baio!

I was OBSESSED with this movie when it came out. I had it on video and watched it about a million times. This scene always freaked me right the hell out -- my best friend and I *still* reference it all the time. ("How are you?" "Much BEEEEEETTAAAAAAAAH")
So cuh-reepy!
What a find. God bless YouTube!

Holy crap. I just had a flashback to my childhood. I think we had this taped on VHS from TV, along with such cinematic classics as Batteries Not Included and Flight of the Navigator.

OK, I am delurking to say that I LOVED THAT MINISERIES! my parents had taped the whole thing, and when I would stay home from school sick (real or faked) I would watch the whole thing. I think the hypnotic effect was even greater under the influence of cold medicine.
awesome.

I remember being a little bit obsessed with this version when I was maybe five or so. Oddly enough, this was my favorite scene. Crazy stuff. It wasn't until many years later that I realized all of the people in the movie were well known personalities.
Beware, this scare tactic might have the opposite effect on Juniper. I used to watch all kinds of warped and dark shit from the 80s and none of it turned me away. Try out Return to Oz on her in a couple of years. I was so terrified of the Wheelers that whenever I watched that movie my mom had to hold my hand through those scenes... and then rewind it over and over again because I. could. not. look. away. I was and still am a total masochist. Thank you, childhood television mindfucking!
If I ever have kids, you can bet your ass that the only tv they'll be watching will be a sampling of the creepy programs I liked when I was young. They might have been totally twisted, but at least they still had some creativity, unlike Dora and the like.
Can you imagine Dora meeting up with Carol Channing? "Hola!" ... "Jam tomorrow but not today!?!" ... "Hola!" I'd be begging for Sammy Davis Jr. to show up with his hookah after two minutes of that.

well, if it backfires and she ends up wanting to watch more TV because of this, I'll just let her watch Jan Svankmajer's version. that'll teach her.

Weird! You have the same initials as my dad, Dutch. And I often compare my life to Juney's--I was born in San Francisco and then moved to Atlanta when I was 5. We drove across the country in our tiny Datsun with all our possessions in the backseat, except for a tiny place where I sat. My main point though, was to say that I LOVE this version of the story and am pretty stoked that you reminded me of it. Thanks!

Oh my. I'm feeling very old now, since I was out of college and clearly missed this entire miniseries without even realizing it. At least my childhood was unscarred. I only had the yearly showing of The Wizard of Oz for entertainment.
I'm afraid to click on the other links.

Yep, we had taped this off TV onto VHS, too. The Jabberwocky was SO freaky. The whole thing was freaky, and yet I was mildly obsessed with it. Seems to be a common theme.

Add me to the "I love this version" club. I wore out our VHS copy. I occasionally sing the "Jam tomorrow" song to Baby Bear. I'm so excited to see it again.

Count me among the terrified, traumatized obsessed. And oh god, that cast! There was no Pat the Pig in the original, Scott Baio! Charles (Lutwidge) was not in charge. Keep on rolling in that grave, Reverend Dodgson; keep on rolling.

Oh man... my sisters and I used to love this! Except for the Jabberwocky part, that scared us. We also loved the crazy 80's Babes in Toyland made-for-TV movie starring a young Drew Barrymore, a then-unknown Keanu Reeves, and Richard Mulligan. You can frighten Juniper off TV for good by showing her these:

I have a friend who was a dancer in a touring "Broadway Legends" show with Carol Channing and Chita Rivera. The stories he can tell are priceless and not something I can repeat on a comments page. Let's just say that it didn't take much for her to get into character for that clip.

Might I recommend The Pee Wee's Playhouse Christmas Special? Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello, Little Richard, Oprah of all people, K D Lang, Zsa Zsa, Dinah Shore and Charo. It may not be Love Boat on Acid but it is also a "who's who" of the 1988 C-List. A moderately gay who's who of the 1988 C-List.

There were actually two of these TV movies, weren't there? Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. I'm pretty sure the freaky Carol Channing scene/Jabberwocky bit was in Looking Glass, but either way, I'm with you on the SCARY. I'm sure I will have nightmares tonight involving, "bread and butter! BREAD AND BUTTER!"

OK, the Sammy Davis, Jr. segment is a must see. I'm sounding like some tourist at the Brown Derby going "That Sammy Davis is just SO talented!"
However, now my daughter is obsessed with that movie. Thanks. I am just praying she forgets, and soon.
3 1/2 does not understand the internet is always there, which is a bonus because Alice in Wonderland can go to sleep. But it can't last.

why focus on it at all? I dont think trying to scare her away is the right approach==i would think just acting like the TV isnt important at all whether promoting it as being good or shunning it intensely as being bad if you refrain from doing either you're likely to get the result you want- an older child who doesnt really care one way or the other about tv and would rather go out and play or go out and actually DO something with their friends because she simply has more fun that way
