I'm impressed that you didn't swear. I feel like swearing, and I'm not even the one staring at the template.
good luck. wish I could help.

I updated (relunctantly) and switched over to the new, easier-to-use template. It got rid of anything extra I had added to my blog. I'm still switched but changed back to the old html template and all my stuff was magically back. I don't know if that will help at all. You certainly seem to know what you're doing more than I...

I am SOOOOOO glad that you posted this. I have seriously been considering (and almost did it today) upgrading my template via Blogger but was worried about what I what lose.
It sounds like the best option is to just work within the existing template and tweak it as desired?
Sorry that you have to learn for all of us.

I'll put up links to the old haloscan pages at the end of each post--- I just can't figure out a way to make the "new" post link up to the old haloscan comments.

Dutch, That's crazy. I had to switch a few days ago to the new blogger and I didn't encounter any problems except not being able to access my blog for a day. That is miserable that this happened. I hope you get it all sorted out.

This is pretty much the consensus I've been getting on new blogger--not worth the hassle. And I hated that I had to start using a gmail account to log in. Good luck with everything.

I just went through this (except with Movable Type because of a mysql error). If the new blogger lets you import entries, you might be able to get the data from your archive html files and use BBEdit to extract the meaningful data by html tag.

I see you also changed to sweetjuniper.og. Think that might be the cause of the diappearing posts? Maybe it's Blogger that will be moving the old posts over?
Eventually, everyone will have to use the new Blogger.

What a drag. I switched a couple days ago...my blog doesn't have anything like the content you have though. I think eventually you won't have a choice. All bloggers are going to have to update at some point...that's my understanding anyway. Just telling you that so you don't kick yourself over having decided to do it.

Hello there. Does telling you I ordered the alphabet book make you feel any better? I suspect not. I'm an RSS feed and I think the individual reposts could be interesting. I'll get to find out what happened in the life of Sweet Juniper before I started reading. Thanks for going to all that extra effort. It's appreciated.

Dutch, to be clear, did you switch to the new Blogger (ie, Blogger [crossed out beta] - the one tied to Google) or did you upgrade your template in order to try and customize your template design? I may have misunderstood...

the problem has nothing to do with the template--- the "archived" posts are on googles www server, and when I switched it over to the "new" blogger, the blog switched to the www2 server, leaving everything inaccessible.
I am going to add a link to the comments on every post to the comments from the old post, so all is not lost.

I switched way back when it was beta. I had no problem with comments.
Oh yeah. That's because none of the 8 people who read my blog actually comment online. They send me lengthy emails instead, or call me, because they all know me well enough to have my phone number. I ended up putting that thing on there where you have to type in funky letters to post, because when I took that off, I got all this weird "HEY, YOU CAN MAKE MONEY AT HOME" bulls#*t automated comments. Do you ever get that? Any suggestions!?

Oh, and I thought I'd mention. I did a meta-post, wherein I posted on your post of yesterday topic, kind of. You're linked. You, and that -2 degrees Fahrenheit post both.
Just doing due diligence, informing you.
Now you may wait for the rush of new readers to flood your site.

Well, I read on an RSS feeder and I had to click over to figure out why you had 36 new entries. I thought it was all the beer, but no, it was just you switching to blogging's version of hell.

1. Get a backup drive! Stat! (I blog with a desktop editor -- ecto -- then publish so I have a copy on my hard drive and a copy on the blogging platform. If Typepad ever goes poof, I've got all my posts at least (not the comments, though).
2. Silver lining: when I fired up my feed reader this AM, I discovered lots of old posts I'd never read before.
Good luck with the update.

Dutch-
I feel your pain. I switched two journals over Baby Toolkit and Linux Activist without much hassle, but I didn't have a ton of backlogged posts and comments to deal with. I also didn't have Haloscan.
I do like the flexibility of the new widget based layout/template system. I can make big changes safely and quickly and revert them without so much as a hiccup.
Good luck. Perhaps the Google Engineers can lend a hand. I've heard that they have helped other big name bloggers in the past that used their software. Perhaps its time to put your Internet celebrity status to the test.

A good amount of the Nashville area blog types switched over to WordPress instead of making the change to the New Blogger, and everyone (so far) has really had favorable experiences with it, since it pulled all our old posts and comments.
Just recently, WP came out with (or is working on) a coverter from the New Blogger over to WP, if you're interested - Memphis's Lynnster's been doing a lot of the moving and has tons of documentation on her site thelynnsterzone.wordpress.com.
