okay, now I'm a little bummed that two goofy-looking hipsters get to take credit for a 50+ year tradition of using cardboard boxes to make robot costumes. I have never seen those hipster robots, but I was a little inspired by Sam's halloween costume from freaks and geeks:

Either way, I love it. The costume is fantastic and I love how Juniper is totally locked into her character. It's like she's been studying with Lee Strasberg.

Totally looks like a costume I made my son when he was in first grade, including the dryer ducting arms and legs. He had a working doorbell on the front, battery operated flashing lights, and every electronic geegaw I could find in the junk drawer. Good thing it didn't rain that night. Thanks for bringing back a fun memory of making his costumes, since he's 15 now and too cool for words (but he did enjoy passing out candy last night).

My brother was so dissappointed this year when his 17 month old wouldn't wear the head piece of his Curious George costume, until I reminded him of the year our Mom worked for weeks on a dinosaur costume only to have him do the same thing. She was so pissed, she wound up wearing it herself prompting one of the neighborhood kids to ask if she was Godzilla.
I didn't see a costume as sweet as Juniper's this year, but any Boston kid knows that putting LED lights and circuit boards on your costume means that everyone will immediately mistake you for a bomb.

I did the robot thing for a 4yo a few years ago. He fit well into a diaper box up-ended. We put beer caps and baby food lids all over it for the buttons, a couple of red strobe reflectors and a heartbeat sound machine torn out of a teddy bear we hated. I think a bike license plate was on the back.

Next year Archer's going to go as Juniper dressed as a Robot. It's settled. (P.S. He's IN LOVE with Juney. She makes him clap his hands and say "happy" which is his speech therapy WOTW-- word of the week.)
Also wanted to say that Medusa is AMAZING. I had a Medusa wig when I was little, too, but mine was just a moppy wig with snakes staple-gunned to it. Ghetto fab.
Happy Halloween to all.

you may have beaten our lisa simpson with a lower cost differential and "voice coach lessons" but we totally rocked with our little shy 2 yr old saying "twick or tweat!" "lisa simpas!" "tank you!" and "happy-ween!" to each and every house we went to, then would turn from the door and say "one more house!" homegirl rocked that shit til 9:30pm with no nap and waaay too much candy. brought a damn tear to my eye.

I am in awe of your and her skills. Both of those costumes are so awesome and I can't tell you how much I appreciate the home-made costume creativity. I think all I saw this year were Disney princesses and Old Navy lions.
I remember making our costumes back in the day (my fav was when i was a Ghost Buster ...or maybe Laura Ingalls Wilder). If Juniper was at my door she would have gotten all the candy, nothing else could have compared!
I can't wait to make a real costume next year for our girl. If she dressed according to her daddy's tates, like Juniper did, she would be Steve Jobs - she already has the black turtleneck, so I'm half-way there!

I love her little robot noises - so cute. And that costume is awesome (though I wouldn't want to be the one stuck wearing it, it definitely looks uncomfortable). Glad you guys had a good Halloween - it was apparently a great year for it. Our streets were crowded with kids, unlike the past few barren years, and everyone was cheerful and very giving with the candy - we had the too-heavy bag here.

Amazing! I made the mistake of watching this in front of my boys. Now 700 viewings later my 17-month-old is running in circles yelling "Doot doot robot!", and the 2.5 year old keeps saying "I love robot girl!!". Juniper has a fan club. Hey, it's better than reading that Rusty the Robot book. Again.

She is just beautiful! Almost-three on Halllowween was awesome for us tis year too--we had SO MUCH FUN. She held my dad's hand through the neighborhood and after every house, she turned around and said "Come on Papa, let's go get more CANDY!"
She is, however, quite crushed now that it doesn't happen every night.
What was your neighborhood like for trick-or-treaters? Ours is more or less ideal (livng by several much more wealthy neighborhoods is great because people who are just out for free candy go there first). When I lived in North Rosedale Park, though, OMG. Traffic jams up and dwn all the streets and horrible children. Not to mention their parents.

Homemade Halloween costumes are the best. Max and I have talked about how we always had parent-made costumes when we were kids (both our moms were into sewing) and how we always felt sorry for kids with store-bought costumes. We never wanted to be Disney Character Of the Moment and never, ever begged for the polyester printed smocks and crunchy plastic masks from the store.
The best costume my mom ever put together? The Rocketeer, for my little brother. It was painstakingly accurate and totally awesome. I hope my efforts for our daughter go half as well.

Very late, but still: My dad made my wee brother pretty much that very robot outfit going on... 22 years ago now. It was for a kindergarten Christmas play, I seem to recall.
And oh! I almost started crying in public when I saw these pictures because they remind me of how much I love my dad, how much he loves Halloween, and how great he still is at the master pumpkin carving and little-kid relating.
Thanks so much for posting these pictures.
Also... your daughter looks spectacular, my childhood memories aside. I think it's the amazing antenna that really top it off, so to speak.
