Personally, I think when you say "whew" about a vacation, you had a great one! 
My last boss went to Maui for his honeymoon, came back and said he hated Hawaii and much preferred Cabo. I asked him why, he said the service sucked. Huh? I said. The drink service at the pool, he replied. Ohhhhh. I had never thought about ranking an entire vacation based on the drink service at the pool. Because, you know, I like to SEE the place I'm going to.
It was indeed a great vacation. Can't wait to go back.
I've been to Oahu (Pearl Harbor). I thought it was ok. My reason? I found it too touristy. The beaches (especially Waikiki) were all those tacky tourist shops and such. I hate that. Now the private Navy beaches, those were great. Basically I've found better places I enjoy more for my money.
If I found the service at the hotel pool poor, I'd get a new hotel next time. As you said, I base my vacation experience on the place itself, not the amenities.
Sounds like a good one, Vince. And a hotel that has free dinner? What's with that?! But the one thing that caught my eye in your post: BOY SCOUT Memorial? Huh?
It's a "living" memorial erected on the 50th anniversary of Scouting on the site of the first Boy Scout Jamboree. We thought it was odd to call it a memorial as well.
Sounds like a great time! I would be interested in going there one day. Hubby has been there on school trips and such I think when he was a teen. Plus, he has business trips in Bethesda, Maryland sometimes and I think they are pretty dang close to each other??
The pictures are great, I really enjoyed them! I am so impressed that you updated so often! And that food at the hotel sounds incredible. We have been to hotels where the breakfast is make your own waffles and all kinds of goodies! Sure is nice, eh??
Bethesda is not far from DC, about 20 minutes maybe by metro. You should definately go. Your kids would love it.

Wow the hotel had some awesome meals for free! (now I'm hungry dammit) I'm glad you all had a great time, it def would be worth returning to again for you.
Incidentally I agree with you 100% about Honolulu and Waikiki beach, it's just another city but with palm trees. The place where it's AT is Maui!
