Gravatar I think sometimes even if you don't impose your judgements on other people, the simple fact that you ARE taking responsibility for your finances makes people compare themselves to you and bristle up whenever money sneaks into the conversation.

Gravatar I wish one day I could sit with friends and family and have a big discussion about how we could help each become more financially free. Unfortunately, money is sensitive topic...one day though...one day...Blog on!

Gravatar I always thought that the younger generation are the ones who are bad at saving money.

Gravatar Excellent post. My parents have been as defensive as yours, and now that they're divorced, nothing has changed.

I'm often left with the impression that both of them just expect that'll "it'll all turn out okay" no matter what.

Gravatar Thanks everyone --
Claire: That's a great point. I thought of that, which is why I am less forthcoming about revealing my own details.
Freedumb: Wouldn't that be fabulous? We can always hope!
James: Yeah it's the younger set who can't save. I just saw how bad it was with my folks and didn't want to repeat their mistakes. 30 is still young, right?
Michael: Our parents have the exact same attitude. It's strange how money problems have a way of being cyclical.

Gravatar I agree, why is it that we can be so open about so many other personal things with our family, but when it comes to finances, it's a taboo topic? Some of my friends know my wife and my income but we don't discuss this with our family. Why the secret?
