Comments for Battle of Ontario....

I am shocked by the anti-Pat Burns movement. I guess no one wants a two-time Jack Adams award winning, Stanley Cup-winning coach?

That'd be a real shake-up move. I'd save it for December/January if we have a disastrous few.

Paddock as interim so he can exit gracefully if need be.

I am shocked by the anti-Pat Burns movement.

For me it's more the anti-sourpuss/anti-boring-hockey movement.

Burns' Leafs didn't play boring hockey in 93 or 94. They played remarkably similar to this year's Ducks except with Todd Gill on defence.

Gravatar Vokoun to Toronto. Please god let it happen. The fire sale in music city has begun

Gravatar I vote for the Ghost of Roger Neilson.

Gravatar Looking at that list of potential coaches, I'm really really glad we have Paull Maurice.
Besides one of the Suter brothers, I'd take Paul over anybody right now. For the interviews alone.

Gravatar I think you should hire this Paddock guy. Last place coaches from the AHL are hard to come by.

Gravatar Paddock has been our assistant coach for two years. The last place coach for our AHL team was Mike Cameron, or something close to that.

Gravatar Vokoun to TO would be Huuuuuuuuuuge.

Gravatar I'd rather have Paul Karyia

Gravatar Note to JFJ, listen to PPP and not jared.

Gravatar JF, trade Wellwood for Owen Nolan.

Gravatar Last year Karyia Pulled 4.5 and Vokoun 6.3. Signing Vokoun would put the Leafs at the brink of the cap (maybe even over depending on how the market drives up his price) and they wouldn't be able to sure up Carlo or bring in any offensive help. Kariya would bring a much needed offensive flair and give the Leafs some wiggle room to sign a backup (Bryz).

Gravatar at least thats my reasoning.

Gravatar wait, I got Vokouns numbers wrong...thats the last year of his salary but 5.3 still dosnt leave much room.

Gravatar hmmm. both my teams are searching for coaches now. Apparently Chiarelli has it narrowed down to four candidates but he's not saying who. Now Murray is looking too. Should be an interesting couple weeks.

Gravatar Put it this way:

I think anyone other than Paddock who is willing to coach for the Sens now would be willing to coach for them in 6 months if need be. And if you don't give Paddock the job, someone else likely will, either now or within the next year. If the new Sens coach is a disaster and anyone other than Paddock, you pretty have to give him a year or two anyways. If Paddock fails, it's easy to provide a graceful exit -- he was just the interim. If he can capitalize on his current relationship with Murray and the players, then it's easy to pull a 'see, we told you so' and remove the interim from his title.

Gravatar Why are so many people touting Paddock as the next coach?

I'm not saying that he's the wrong guy, but I simply don't understand what makes him such a good option.

Can anybody provide a good link to his 'pedigree'?

Gravatar It's low risk and low effort, and smooth for the whole organization.

Bring in a new guy, he's going to want his own new guys anyways, so that's Paddock and crew out. And then cue the stories about how Quinn, as an example, really wants to be GM or is fighting with Murray or Murray's pulling a Lamoriello.

With Paddock, it's easier, and it's just as likely to be successful. If you've sat near him or watch the bench much, you can see how the players respond to him. This isn't a time for radical changes so much as adjustments. And if you don't need to commit to 2yrs 'he just started...' as you would with a big name.

Gravatar Wow, what a mess that sentence is.

The point basically is that if he cuts it, why change, and why watch him do amazing somewhere else. If he doesn't, it's easier to let him fall on his face and then let a new coach and a staff that's legitimately his own come in than have some of them listening to Murray and some to Burns or whoever.

Gravatar Well listening to the Team1200 and one guy brought up a good point. When has a Assistant Coach ever taken over a team at the beginning of the Season or at any time and had success with the team?

Gravatar Off the top of my head?
Crawford and Lalonde

and I'm f'ing drunk.

Gravatar I like Gee's reasoning. It's a pretty safe play for Murray. Bringing in Quinn means you're bringing in a guy that wants your job ASAP.

Also, at least it won't be Julien.

Gravatar Screw the safe choice! Take a risk.

Gravatar As an aside, the Hamilton Tigers are going to be coming into the BoO as the weak sister after this summer cleanup.

Funny that, a few days ago they were going to win the cup before Toronto and Ottawa...

Gravatar I keep hearing Randy Cunneyworth as a head-coach option in Ottawa, in part because of his former ties to the city with both the 67s and Senators, and because he's apparently highly touted by the Sabre organization but with no opportunity for advancement there. It also fits Murray's approach to give young up-and-coming coaches an opportunity, not recycle an experienced guy.

As for Kariya, he apparently likes small-market teams where he can remain anonymous, so Toronto is an unlikely destination for him.

Gravatar Also, at least it won't be Julien.

yep. and who do the Bruins get?

Gravatar Kariya in Toronto? I doubt he will be on JFJ's radar. We have Wellwood already, the same type of player... only younger and cheaper.

Anybody else out there thinking Handzus might be a good grab this UFA season? I'm not so sure he would fit into Toronto, but somebody should grab this guy in a hurry. There may not be a better 2-way player on the market.

Gravatar Is health should be a concern.

Gravatar Handzus' health you mean?
Actually, from 2000 to 2006 he missed like 15 games to injury. That's damn reliable.
Of course, you could be talking about his reconstructed knee, which ya, could be a worry. Antropov has two of those, and he plays like 50 games a year if we're lucky.

Gravatar Sorry, that should be 'his health should be a concern'.

I think it'd be a risky investment, but it could payoff in a big way.

Gravatar Ya, depends what he's asking for. He was around $2.2M last year. If the price stays about the same, it would be worth it. Just for fun I wopuld actually like to see him on a line with Pony and Antropov. Just for the sheer visual awe.

Gravatar Antropov has two of those, and he plays like 50 games a year if we're lucky

You're lucky he misses as many as he does.....

Gravatar Mucks to TO?

Gravatar Why not, really? The Leafs love personalities who are worn-out and are in the talent decline stage.

Gravatar So we can have an older GM dither instead of a young one?

I'd rather not have someone still living off the 80s Oilers (A monkey could have coached them to the cup) or the work of previous GMs (in Ottawa).

Overrated to the extremem.

Gravatar Overrated to the extreme

So he'd be a very good fit in Toronto.

Gravatar Handzus is preportedly seeking $4M/yr. Some team who misses out on the prime UFAs will pay it, too. Just watch.

Gravatar So he'd be a very good fit in Toronto.

I bet he'd love beating the sens in the playoffs.

Gravatar Muckler would have to be alive when the Leafs make the playoffs.

Gravatar Muckler would have to be alive when the Leafs make the playoffs.

Pow.

Gravatar He can't make it one more year?

Maybe he burned down the records office.

Gravatar You're lucky he misses as many as he does.....

You only wish you had secondary scoring nearly as talented as the 'Pov!

Gravatar Muckler in Toronto. That's funny.

Look, nobody is taking Gerber, nobody wants Redden, and nobody is taking Muckler.

Stop trying to dump your trash on everyone else and stay busy trying to sign ex-Leafs so your team will have "heart" next year. I mean, isn't that why he was fired, cause he couldn't get a 42 year old ex-Leaf?

Gravatar "Look, nobody is taking Gerber, nobody wants Redden, and nobody is taking Muckler."

If anyone is stupid enough to take them, it would be the Leafs...they just resigned Sundink for gods sake..as long as they have their corporate sushi eating fans buying the seats..they will have no motivation to improve..they are going nowhere fast and there is nothing Leaf Nation can do about it

Gravatar This is a simple equation folks.

Winning = Money
MLSE loves Money
Therefore MLSE wants to win because that lines they pockets the most.

They are trying. They just aren't that good at it.

Gravatar They are trying

Bullshit. If they were serious about trying, they'd be able to grant their first pick on Saturday the choice of jersey numbers 13, 18, 31, 24, 23, 16 and 80.

Gravatar Haha Wavetank. Alfredsson only had 11 more points than Sundin with Heatley and Spezza on his wings, and with two more games played.

That still doesn't put Alfredsson at more than 1ppg over his career.

Gravatar That still doesn't put Alfredsson at more than 1ppg over his career.

Alfie has a Cup Final presence. Sundin will long for that well into retirement.
