Can someone put up Toronto's starting lineup as it stands now? Seems to me that Leaf fans are avoiding the reality of their lineup!
Is Stajan really the number 1 center on the Leafs?

Not avoiding it. Everyone knows the Leafs will be terrible offensively next year.
What I like is that they're getting their D in order. This way they'll have a good defensive foundation in place when we add Kessel, Nash, Kadri and Taylor Hall to our lineup next year.

I do like the idea of Koivu on the second line, if he could be had for reasonable dollars. He's on the downside of his career but he's still got skill and heart.

Sorta blows the mind, doesn't it?
Once you've recovered from that genius bit of planning -- and made it past a built-from-the-back squad with no goaltender, consider this:
Who's going to be killing penalties in Toronto?

Killing penalties won't be the problem. Stajan was actually quite good at that before he was thrust to the first line.
As far as goaltenders, Toronto does still have Vesa Toskala. He's coming off surgery, who knows what will happen, but he's shown he can play well and carry the load. He just needs to do it with consistency.
Also, I think you'll have a hard time finding a Leaf fan who thinks Toronto will even come close to making the playoffs with this roster, or anybody who thinks we have a legitimate first line right now.
Not exactly uncovering a mystery here Don, nor a conspiracy!
What Toronto have are a few reliable 50-60 points guys, and a whole lot of question marks. The Leafs will have Blake, Poni, Stempniak, Stajan, Grabovski, Kulemin and Orr likely making he team and after that some or all or none of: Tlusty, Bozak, Hanson, Jimmy Hayes and Mikhail Stefanovich will get a spot.
We all assume Kadri is back in junior, and since DiDomenico busted his Femor lets assume he's gone for another year which is a shame, he might have been ready.
Burke may also sign a UFA forward, and Kaberle could be dealt for scoring if we believe the papers. Burke also said in a previous press conference that he might have to wheel and deal straight up until the Christmas break before he feels his roster is set.
To judge the team on July 2nd is a bit premature.

I'm a Sens fan, but that's one of the worst looking lineups in years. I can't believe we're entering our fifth or sixth straight season of "Ottawa needs a legit 2nd line centre." They also still lack a #1 D. And wingers. And we haven't even gotten into the new starting goaltender, with injury problems, who's never seen the playoffs, and costs $4M a year.
Ugh.

Sorry, I was mixing up draft position. Sens finished 2 points ahead of the Leafs and it cost them two slots in the draft.
Ottawa finished with 83 points. Toronto with 81.
So lets just keep that in mind as you try and poke holes in Burke's strategy or at the Leafs in general. Ottawa were terrible this season and so far haven't improved one drop.

Sens fans, it pretty apparent now that we can expect very few signings of consequence with Heatley playing with his vagina and our balls at the same time.
We have made 4 signings to date. We have all heard about Neil and I will get to that when I have some more time.
The other 3 signings you may not know about are below.
The official reports:
Martin St. Pierre - Center: http://senators.nhl.com/team/app...ge&
service=page
He could be the "under the radar signing of the day". It's not much, but best case scenario, we have another inspired Ryan Shannon on our hands. Martin is a low-risk, high-reward guy who put up the points in the minors. Hopefully he can convert some of those to the NHL when he gets the call.
Mike Brodeur - Goalie: http://senators.nhl.com/team/
app...rticleid=433072
He will be the #1 starter in Bingo. Thank God! Glass is horrible.
Brodeur, 26, was quite the find for the AHL Rochester Amerks this past season, joining them as the ECHL's Augusta Lynx folded, earning all-star honors, then finishing with an 18-13-4 record, a 2.45 goals-against average and .921 save percentage. He saved their season and they are the first to admit that and promptly offered him a contract.
Brodeur apparently rejected the offer from Rochester's parent club, the Florida Panthers.
The Panthers were willing to pony up the money — right to the re-entry waiver cap of $105,000 — but Brodeur is believed to have surveyed the goaltending situation in Ottawa and seen green pastures.
It's interesting because Ottawa already has Pascal Leclaire under contract after acquiring him from Columbus at the trade deadline, plus Alex Auld has a second year left on his contract and Brian Elliott is a restricted free agent. There has been some speculation, assuming Elliott is re-signed, that Auld will now be traded. Watch for something to happen here.
Brodeur’s old goalie coach from junior at Medicine Hat, Eli Wilson, is the Senators goalie coach, so familiarity within the system could play a role in his decision.
Bottom line: The move is huge for the B-Sens, whose goaltending ran maddeningly hot and cold after Elliott was recalled at midseason.

Sens fans, our last signing of the 3 you may not have heard about is Erik Condra - Right Wing:
http://senators.nhl.com/team/
app...rticleid=433009
Erik has been pretty much been a consistent PPG player for his junior career:
http://senators.nhl.com/team/app...88&
service=page
His PPG is even more impressive when you consider that hockey has always been his "hobby" if you will. He has been pre-med and always has focused his goals towards medicine first. It seems with this contract, hockey is now first. Good things ahead, as this contract now finishes his NCAA career. I am sure you know that once a pro contract is signed, college sports is no longer an option.
It's good to see Murray is building the B-Sens back up after Muckler came in with the explosives.
Welcome to Bingo: St. Pierre, Brodeur and Condra

He obviously meant that we finished above you in the "Draft" standings.
For what it's worth, I think Burke has done a great job of quietly stripping this team down to its bare bones while still remaining committed to his pledge to improve the team toughness and defence. Yesterday's signings proved that. Are they going to be game breakers? Obviously not.
The leafs are going to lose games next year... A lot... but the first time Orr beats the living hell out of Neil, or Exelby takes Spezza's head off, or Komisarek blocks his 400th shot of the year, I'm not ashamed to say, it will make this rebuild that much easier to deal with.
Burke obviously talks a big game. I think most of that is a smoke screen to hide the fact that this truely is a purging. He's here to rebuild this team, first and foremost. If he had've been more active at the draft that would've been great but he wasn't going to get fleeced just for the sake of making a move... Having had JFJ as a GM for a long time will make you appreciate little things like that.
He barks that we will compete for a playoff spot this year when most of us already know that we won't even come close with this roster. What kind of GM would he be if he said anything other than that? He's doing what needed to be done 4 years ago while still attempting to install an winning attitude... and picking up some bad ass mutherf&*kers in the process.
Now, if he can just find a way to get a bucket of pucks and a draft pick for Stajan the purging will be complete.

I think so too. So what does he do now? Beats me! But it better be something.... so:
Clearly Burke has decide this team will be UFA'd out of mediocrity, or else why these long-horizon contracts?
BTW, Murray's moves were less flashy, but pretty solid BM-type building I think. Obviously, it'd also be nice to get the pink elephant out of the room. Like BeRed, I thought the Oil offer was a little light, but if BM could find Penner what he needs to redeem himself it would probably come out in Ottawa's great favour.

Burke is rebuilding, not trying to put the final pieces of the puzzle together. This team needs work in many areas, not just scoring goals. Burke has used this UFA period to address the physical and character deficiencies in the line-up. Toronto were pushovers last year and we were soft in our own end. I think Burke has mainly addressed that don't you?
Another problem has been in net. He's working on it.
Another problem is the lack of game-breaker offensive players. That will probably take a little more time.
What has Murray done to address any of Ottawa's problems? Not even one Fisher trade rumour? Think he should have traded Spezza before Team Canada decided he's not even worth inviting to camp? What about defence, I thought Ottawa still needs a stud back there?

Ottawa's loaded on D. Up the ying yang. They're almost all young and with Cowen they now have a couple of just huge, huge guys.
Spezza's NTC kicked in so he's a Sen now. That's good news. And the Heatley shake up might actually help him, in my opinion.
The Edm-Ott deal is (predictably) officially dead now, according to what Murray told the Sun today.
Murray's moves so far have been nicely highlighted by BeRed. As has been observed before, the UFA route is not the Ottawa route, and is usually not the best route (see Toronto). As Duthie et al. mentioned yesterday, often times the biggest winners on UFA day are the losers (Briere, Gomez, etc, etc.). I think Burkey not getting the two Swedes, despite his best efforts, may have been the best thing for Toronto. Negotiating contracts and deals from 3 or more different timezones probably was not, though.

Anonymous completes me. I don't always agree 100% with his thoughts so far (99.9%), but the way he presents them, gives me the heebie-jeebies.
I've been waiting for one of 2 things to happen to this site:
1. The internet to contact this site and shut it down for the useless barrage of Grade 2 insults. Invective that is passed off as witty by the 3 person clique that forms said web address.
2. Someone else to come along and actually talk hockey. Chatter, which just by the way it’s typed and formatted, has an aroma of education and honored repute to it. This would be mainly for one of two reasons; but probably a combination of both. An education beyond Grade 2 (see insults oration above) and actually playing the game of hockey. You know, like instead of watching it or reading about it on TSN, Sportsnet, Toronto Sun or Toronto Star.
Thanks to Anonymous for making #2 come to fruition.

Heatley to remain an "Ottawa Sens".
Anonymous... as a Sens fan, can I ask you to fuck off in re Muppet? Your whole 'I'm here to talk about hockey and not engage in provocative commentary directed at other fans' from the other day has been exposed as pure and utter bullshit.

You can ask, but I fail to see how you being a Sens fan makes your opinion any more valid than mine or BeReds or Dons.
pure and utter bullshit.
I think you should maybe spend a minute actually getting up to speed before you come in and start playing Solomon. I hardly threw the first punch, in this thread or elsewhere, and I HAVE been trying to talk hockey the whole time.
Unlike Muppet I never said anyone was a coward, or an idiot, or any other personal attack that wasn't entirely based on what he actually said. And my first post on this thread was actually on hockey, not an attempt to mock Sens fans or their credibility.

THM brought up the fact he's a Sens fan to tell you that "hey, I'm on your side but you're out of line".
Take the wisdom and move on.

He's not on my side. My side is the side that thinks this stuff stinks, but that if one guy (you) is going to be allowed to run around throwing juvenile cheapshots and calling people names, another guy (me) should be allowed to point out that these days that's about all you do, and you are so far removed from anything hockey you don't even know the Leafs finished below the Sens this year.
Don't kid yourself. The fact that so many Sens fans have either tolerated your crap for so long or step to your defense is a testament to them, not you. It's also strengthens the contention that 'our side' is indeed a well balanced, progressive one, and that the number of Sens fans banned on this site has less to do with them than with you.
You want to move on? Move on then. Or don't -- I don't care.

I've been following this blog for over 2 years now. I don't often comment but I do enjoy the comments of others - most of the time. It's too bad when egos get in the way of some good natured back and forth. There's a nasty edge to these comments that I haven't seen since Notch and Sensin05' or whatever his name was. I'm starting to wonder about the new senators fans who jump in here. They all seem to have this huge chip on their shoulders.
Keep the comments to hockey and lose the nastiness, guys. It's really boring.

I love your "I'm the new Sheriff in Sens town" facade though, it really works for you! Keep it up and welcome to the blog.

Ok, that's enough. I really must get some work done...

Love the vid Don... Grabo has "jam". His play/antics were actually some of the very few highlights from last years team. With Molson Exelby, Bobby Orr, and Komisutra in the lineup next year he should be able to strut his stuff even more this year. He might turn out to be a Berezin... He might turn out to be Samsonov, maybe more. Who knows, I just know I love seeing him "stick it" to the habs.
Love what Leafs are doin this off season... they went out and addressed a few of their glaring needs. They're not gonna straighten this ship out over night and still have alot o shit to fix, but they just got a lot tougher on the backend. The offense will come in the next few drafts, the farm and hopefully a UFA or two next summer.
What I'm gonna love the most abou the upcoming season are the cries from Sensland for suspensions when Giggles gets lambasted at the blueline by Exelby after admiring one of his patented behind the back passes. While we're on that topic... how you guys feel about him not getting an invite to the O camp?

What I like most about the toughness Toronto added is they aren't Darcy Tucker or Shayne Corson tough, where it becomes a violent and insecure sideshow. I also like that Toronto are going to be far bigger and stronger in front of the net, which is good news for Toskala who, dare I say, was hung out to dry many a night.
I think we still need a bit of muscle on forward because Orr will only play on the 4th line and that won't help the first three lines be any more feared than they were last year. Nobody is scared to go into a corner with 80% of our forwards. That has to change.

Also, I think $2.9M for Grabs is a lot. Seems like we could have signed him for a bit less considering he was only a RFA.
Did you notice Antropov signed for $4M a year in Atlanta? I think that's fair money for him.

Sundin? Seriously? I agree Brennan has lost his mind.
And his proposal to also move Smith, Piccard and Schubert to Edmonton is presumably impossible now that Murray has confirmed that Heatley and his agent have said Murray is not allowed to speak to Edmonton regarding a trade.
Now that the $4M has been paid, I like Heatley + Smith + Schubert to San Jose for Michalek, Vlasic and Pavelski.

Sens fans, this is what I have for you from the latest Development Camp that I was at on Thursday (I have been to 2 now). I am typing this on my phone so bear with me. I will be going to todays on-ice session as well:
I didn't get to see the whole squad practice, but I can comment on the following players:
I always get drawn to goalies as that is my position. Get ready for Lehner fellas, he is awesome. He has size, he moves well and as every scout already says, is very similar in technique to Lundqvist. This guy impressed me almost more than anyone else. He took 1 on 1 shots from Spezza in the afternoon and stoned him with several nice saves - and a spectacular one that just trickled in (I hated those). He's got poise, composure and his eyes were always watching the other two goalies and Spezza to see their instincts and what beat them etc. Immediately one of our best prospects in the system.
The other goalies were Rowat and Volkening. Of the two, I don't think Rowat has a lot of chance, but Volk. was pretty good. Will be a good backup for Bingo behind Brodeur.
Cowen is just massive out there, he handles the puck well, but the practices today were tough and he showed a lot of rust. Still, very big, imposing dude back there.
Silfverberg is a lot bigger than I thought he was going to be. Nice reach, good skills, needs to be nurtured for a while, but quite a nice pick up as well.
Petersson was on the other side of the rink, but when I looked over, he had completed the pylon-esque course in record time. Nice looking prospect. Probably no more than a year away, but again, I didn't get to see him too much.
However, besides Cowen, another guy working right in front of me was Craig Schira - and I thought he looked small...until I realized he was working with Cowen and Wiercioch. Really nice skills, really impressed me a lot. Big time puck mover, who loves to have the puck. Nice pick up, might be NHL caliber already.
Now...the other guy that was right in front of me was Patrick Wiercioch - and let me be as clear as possible:
Everything you've heard is true and much more!
I can't stress how incredible this kid is. He's huge, he's fast, and he’s got the most amazing stick handling skills I've seen in a long, long time. He owns the puck when it's on his stick and his reach is unreal. He flew through the practice drills in no time, with the panache of a seasoned veteran. He'll go back to school, play with Team Canada and might take another year after that, but let me assure you, that this kid is headed to a top-pairing in the NHL (barring a massive set back).
He might be the most complete of our D prospects- and as a matter of fact, might be the most talented of all our D-men, Volchenkov, Karlsson, Kuba etc. included.
He's awesome.
Sorry for the poor quality of this, just info for you guys.

THM, sorry I am in Ottawa watching the development camps. I didn't see this earlier and typing this from my phone. I forgot my laptop. Ugh.
All Neil really said was that he was very happy he remains a Senator. He had offers from other teams for more money and longer term as well, but wants to be in Ottawa for the rest of his career. He promises the fans and the franchise better days ahead. He also acknowledged his weak performance recently and said that he is as healthy as he has ever been in his career. I hope/think he must be alluding to the fact that he was injured and that is the reason for his poor play.
As for talk on Heatley...he only said that if Heatley gets traded the players coming in will help the team and if he stays he expects Heatley to be a good teammate.

Sorry Don, I'm a goalie and Lehner is on my horizen.
Karlsson was there and looks slick. I gave a big write-up on him after the first workout. I didn't watch him as closely this time as he was at the other end of the rink.
